______ Passed Away Today, RIP (1 Viewer)

Mary Weiss, lead singer of the girl group the Shangri-Las, dies at age 75.

I would briefly say that her and her group's music, once held up as high camp, was a lot more influential and serious than people gave it credit for until recently. More recently, people have dug the toughness and grit in the Shangri-Las' songs, as well as their innovations within the girl group genre. Produced by George "Shadow" Morton, they had a lasting impact on future musicians and songwriters alike.

They came from a gritty part of Queens (Cambria Heights), which was reflected in their image and song lyrics.

Figured I'd post this here. Eerily moving. R.I.P., Mary.

RIP @FatMax (Seth). One of the originals on the board and an all-around awesome and hilarious guy. Passed away last Wednesday. Way too young.
I opened up Facebook, which I might do once a week, and that was the first thing I saw. Seth and I exchanged craft beers a couple of times via mail way back in the day, and after getting his phone number we would drunk dial each other occasionally and usually we would end up talking for quite awhile (wish we would have kept this tradition up). Never got to meet him in person, but if we had lived in close proximity I know we would have been great IRL friends. I can only imagine how hurtful this is to his family.

A guy who made us laugh, treated everybody who interacted with him with respect and kindness. When he shared stories about being a small business owner who had to deal with employees it was evident he cared deeply for them and put other's needs ahead of his own. A gentle soul who is going to be missed.

RIP friend. :(

I recall the time you guys were doing just that and after a few beers one of you, probably Seth, patched me into the call in the middle of the night and we chatted for a couple of hours.

I know it was him that patched you in, and yes, several beers were had. It seems weird to just randomly talk on the phone with someone you know from the internet, but it was so easy with Seth.

Damn.... never really had much interaction with him but definitely know that he was a long-timer and seeing good folks leave this Earth is tough to swallow, especially as I get older myself. RIP Seth, may your family find peace.

well... ugh.

had different interests/regular-threads in here... but always enjoyed seeing him the times we did overlap. seemed like a standup, solid dude. **** man... 48?!

I say this sincerely - he was one of my favorites here, and always had something to say worth hearing. I did not know him in any sense other than here, but it is funny how a guy can make a difference in the form of a few pixels every day. I will miss him and I hope that his family and friends find peace.

Director Norman Jewison. If you don’t know his name, you know his films. Film credits include directing In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, Moonstruck, and The Hurricane.

Aww. Norm was approached by Jewish backers of the Broadway musical to direct the film because they logically 'assmued' anyone named JEWison was, ya know, Jewish. Norman was Christian and said that a Jew should direct the film. It led to a pregnant pause but the backers decided Jewison was their man and history was made.
This cracked me up when I was watching the CD extras.
During filming of Fiddler On The Roof a camera was on Topol who shared that he was trying to convert Jewison and said that if he turned that he could change his name to Christianson.

So sorry to hear this. RIP Seth.

I think we have a separate thread for FBGs (Or if we dont, we should).

I think we need that too. I'm not very good at the search feature here, but perhaps the thread was created and has floated to the back pages?

We're really lost some quality people over the years and it would be nice to keep their memories alive here. I wonder if it would be too much to ask for a thread like that to get pinned to the top? Suppose we could as Joe, but curious what others here think.

What happened to him? Never met up in person but played video games with him back in the day and he's the only other Kings fan on the board that could commiserate with me. That's awful.
