______ Passed Away Today, RIP (3 Viewers)

Martin Phillipps, the frontman and songwriter for New Zealand band The Chills died at age 61. The Chills were one of the foremost practitioners of the Dunedin sound and were a big influence on American and UK indie acts of the 80s and 90s.

Once we were damned, now I guess we are angels
For we passed through the dark and eluded the dangers
Then awoke with a start to startling changes
All the tension is ended, the sentence suspended
And darkness now sparkles and gleams

Rip Chi Chi.

One of the first golfers I recall watching. Loved the sword celly.

I grew up playing his downtown Clearwater course, maintained by kids from his Foundation. Met him once…he approached 12-yr-old me in the parking lot and asked me how I played. Amazing man…

All around good guy. Dad was a laborer, he took up caddying & taught himself to play with makeshift equipment. By age 12 he shot 67.

Won 8 times in the Tour, another 22 on the Senior Tour. Incredibly generous both in his on course persona and quietly BTS. First Puerto Rican in the golf HoF.

Will be missed, great ambassador for the game.

People forget Chi Chi was one of the big hitters back in the 60s - even though he was tiny. I mean at 5'7" and 120lbs he could bomb it 300yds and was often featured in Golf Magazine and Golf Digest. And being tiny kid myself - that was pretty cool.

That doesn't sound like much these days - but that was big, very big and using steel/aluminum shafts and persimmon heads.

He would put on a show on the driving range and interact with people.

And of course, he was on the cover of Devo's first album.

Almost. Chi Chi's pic was on their first single, "Be Stiff". https://media.wbur.org/wp/2017/08/0825_chi-chi-album-cover-400x400.jpg

Very interesting story in how they arrived at the image used on their album. Link includes Chi Chi's comments on it.

I never knew until Binky’s post that it was Chi Chi on that Devo cover. Ultimately became convinced it was David Dodds.

Even with the alterations, it still looks like Chi-Chi.

Wallace Amos, founder of Famous Amos cookies, passed yesterday at age 88. TIL Amos had a whole ‘nother largely overlooked career before the cookie company:

Returning to New York City, Amos went to college to become a secretary, and after graduating, took a mailroom clerk job with the William Morris Agency. Eventually, he became the agency's first African American talent agent. He signed Simon & Garfunkel and headed the agency's rock 'n' roll department. Amos attracted clients by sending them chocolate chip cookies along with an invitation to visit him. He represented musicians such as The Temptations, Sam Cooke, and Marvin Gaye.

Saw him on an old Shark Tank a while back.

Mark Cuban was absolutely reverent about him and his life story.

Rest in peace, Mr Amos

To this day for some reason I thought he was a former professional athlete before going into the cookie business

80s Power Pop singer/songwriter Greg Kihn died Tuesday from Alzheimer's disease at age 75. After his 15 minutes of fame with hits like "Jeopardy" and "The Breakup Song", Kihn was a longtime morning radio host in the Bay Area and a mystery novelist.

My favorite Kihn kut has always been "Remember"

Dang, some buddies and I were talking about one hit wonders not long ago and I had to argue fiercely that Greg doesn't fit that bill because he had TWO big hits. Well, big for me. I have zero hits of any size.

RIP. 75 is too young and man, what a hideous disease. :(

Really liked Justify. He was a staple of early MTV.

Gena Rowlands, muse of John Cassavetes , among other things, dead at 94
First role -1954
Last role - 2017

That's incredible.
Such a great actress. She’s really something in Woman Under the Influence. Not a movie I ever want to see again but she’s captivating in it.
The headline I just read gave her The Notebook as the accompanying movie in her headline. Boo! WUTI is one of my favorites in general, and she was absolutely astonishing in it.. one of the very best acting performances I've seen. Rip.

Yeah I guess The Notebook makes sense in terms of the size of the hit and its recency. Her Cassavettes movies were smaller independent movies that most people aren’t familiar with. She’s one of those people who actors and people in the industry idolize but never quite crossed over into popular culture. She doesn’t have any real massive hits that I can think of where she was the lead.

Funny.. mi always thought of Gloria as he her big Hollywood movie. But of course, it was also Cassavetes.

I'd forgotten Jon "Bowser" Bauman succeeded Marshall on Hollywood Squares in the 80s but I bet @Mister CIA remembers
There was also the combined HS/MG show that Bowser and Gene Rayburn co-hosted. Rather odd show where they walked out together onstage and then took turns sitting on the panel/square while the other hosted that half.

I was looking to see if Kihn's 1982 appearance on the King Biscuit Flower Hour ever made it online, and it looks like not. Instead, I'll post this 1981 live performance of "The Breakup Song" in tribute.

Loved her in one of my favorite films:

Lonely are the Brave
Really good movie.

She starred in a Woody Allen film called "Another Woman". When I first saw the movie on TV, I didn't know it was a Woody Allen film until the credits. It was unlike most of his films in that it was straight-forward, and nearly a one-woman show with Rowlands on screen for every scene.

It was quiet, compelling and intense. I would put it in his upper tier of films. Unfortunately, it failed to connect with moviegoers and critics to an extent that Woody had difficulty getting financing for his next film--which turned out to be "Crimes and Misdemeanors".

That movie was considered a "comeback" for him, which is sad because "Another Woman" should not have been something to come back from.

I remember his album titles being puns that used his last name: Next Of Kihn, Kihntinued,Khinspiracy, RocKhinRoll, Kihntagious, Citizen Kihn.
I didn't realize all of his album titles didn't follow the pattern.

Alain Delon, the French actor most famous for his roles in the films of New Wave director Jean-Pierre Melville, especially “Le Samourai,” has died. He was 88.

“He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family,” according to a statement released to the AFP news agency by his family.

In addition to “Le Samourai,” Delon also appeared in Melville’s brilliant heist film “Le Cercle rouge” and “Un Flic.”

The guy oozed cool Frenchman vibes. Always enjoyed seeing him in movies.
