A 7 year old brought a gun to my kid's school yesterday (1 Viewer)

jfc.

glad everybody's alright. hopefully will get to the bottom of this and punish the gun-owner(s) for being so idiotic.

Some parents first learned of the incident at Crossroads Elementary when Council Member Amy Brendmoen wrote about it on the Como Neighbors Fun Stuff page.
The school should have contacted parents instead of them finding out in a newsletter

Agreed. Amy is a friend of mine, and she even waited a bit after she heard. We didn't get a note from the school until a couple hours after finding out from her.

I believe the parents received an automated message from the school regarding the event.

We got an email from the school at noon. Incident happened at 8:30. First heard about it on facebok at 10:30. I understand the need to get the story correct before sending out an email, but I think 3.5 hours is kind of a long time to keep parents in the dark.

fun stuff isn't really timely.

can't imagine what to do with this information if it were to happen at my kids' school. now what? tell jr to stay clear of kids with guns? dodge and weave? honestly- as a parent, what's the follow up on this?

Just throw that kid out of school.  Chances are that kid is going to be a burden to society with parents like that school or no school.  At least the other kids will be safer.

No kidding.  A helpless situation for sure. :(

Tough to just throw out a 1st grader. I am guessing he knew it was wrong, but I doubt he calculated the seriousness of it. The parents are the ones that need to be dealt with harshly. The kid needs support and help and love more than an expulsion

Knowing 100% of the parents in my daughter's class, and around 50% of parents in the other first grade classes, I can't imagine what would be happening here given this scenario.

7 in first grade before the turn of the year? Any red flags with this child previously?

Must be a pretty awful day at the school/in the community all around.

Probably some kid welshed on a bet and posting the kid's name in bold on another message board wasn't getting the point across.

That, or he was looking to off some pigeons.

Can you clarify what was on facebook?  Was this the "fun stuff page" mentioned earlier?  Was this an official communication from the school?  Unofficial information post from a teacher or parent?

City councilperson heard from police shortly after incident. She waited on the info a bit, hoping that official word would come from the school. As of 1030 there was nothing, so she posted in our neighborhood Facebook page about the incident. Only posted limited details for that was all she had

The child who took the gun to the North End school reported it had been in a top drawer in his uncle’s bedroom and he’d put it in his backpack, according to Ernster. It wasn’t clear whether the relative lives at the same home as the boy or how long the child had the gun.

Better to throw out one potential bad apple then to spoil the bunch.
