What are thoughts on Mathias Kiwanuka? Osi is returning and Tuck is a stud along with the addition of Canty along the line. Are the Giants gonna try him at OLB like they did a couple years ago before he broke is leg?

I am assuming Kampman will play OLB in the 3-4. Is that correct? Interested in hearing more about these players.

Thanks in advance.

We don't know what to think of Kampman in coverage either. He did play LB his first 2 years in college, but don't know what to think of him as an OLB.Kevin Greene seems to like him there. I have doubts.

The coaches have said that Kiwanuka will rotate at end and they've added two OLB talents (Clint Sintim and Michael Boley) that are improvements over what they had last year. The rotation will mean Kiwanuka gets plenty of fresh leg snaps alongside talented players. However, those players will get to the quarterback before him frequently and the rotation will hurt his overall tackle opportunity. He'll likely end up finishing as a DL2-3 type player, but will have high week-to-week variability because of the rotational issue. The Packer coaches seem to believe Kampman can play a solid all-around OLB game. He had some experience in college as a LB, but that was many years and many fewer pounds ago. The zone blitz scheme could suit him well, though, and it's possible he could have a Greg Ellis like transition to LOLB.

kevin greene was primarily a rusher, in fact, almost exclusively

if Greene likes Kamp, maybe it's because the Pack doesn't plan on drpping him into coverage much at all?

conjecture here, just conjuecture....

Will Kampman see any time at DE? Will MFL keep him listed as DE?
I don't remember Dom Capers using a lot of four man nickel fronts when he's run a base 3-4 in the past. He did use a fair amount of four man fronts in Jacksonville, I think. I think Kampman sees the bulk of his time at LB, but there's a chance (especially if the GB official depth chart is sketchy) that he could stay at DE. Wouldn't count on it though.

Right now he's listed as DE on mfl. I hope it stays that way or his value goes waaay down.
If they change him we all write MFL and complain. They changed Suggs a couple years ago and enough people complained they moved him back to DE. Suggs has officially been a LB according to the Baltimore Ravens depth chart but MFL still has him at DE so raise hell if Kampman gets the shaft.

:lmao:

Maybe I'm missing something other than someone's selfish bias, but shouldn't Kampman (and anyone else for that matter) be listed at the position they actually play?

If he plays the majority of snaps at LB, he should be listed as a LB. And vice-versa if he plays the majority of snaps at DE.

No, you're right on. The fact is Suggs gets listed at DE at MFL. I have also heard the Packers say the 3-4 will be brought in slowly and even though it's their base defense look for Kampman to line up at DE for 60-70% of the snaps, so he should stay at DE IMO. I'm fine with Kampman being listed at LB.... but Suggs has to be listed at LB too or else no dice.

I don't agree that Terrell Suggs is a great comparison here.

It's true that the Ravens list him as a LB, though I've honestly never fully agreed with that. I'm not sure a team like the Ravens truly have a default depth chart. The Justin Smith argument was made (correctly) on the strength of play-by-play data that was generated by the SF beat writers and, quite frankly, us.

With regard to Terrell Suggs, consider the positional breakdown in the player participation logs from the first four Raven games (W1, 3, 4, 5) put together by ProFootballFocus. According to their game logs, Suggs played 151 snaps as a defensive end, 79 snaps as an OLB and five snaps as a defensive back. I don't think there's a clear argument to be made at all that he should be an LB on the basis of his on-field play. The only piece of relevant data is the Baltimore depth chart, which I agree is compelling given the precedent that MFL in particular has set in other cases.

In Kampman's case, I think the split -- assuming Capers actually uses a four man front on nickel packages and the Packers are intent on using the 3-4 (and I think the Raji and Matthews draft picks suggest they are) -- will be much closer to 60-40 LB-DE. It's certainly something we should be able to track during the preseason, however.
