A formal apology from MOP to the Portis Nation (1 Viewer)

Dear Shark Pool,

It came up in the Portis thread that I drafted him at 3.07 in the FIX Redraft last season. I went back and studied what I was doing and it became fairly obvious that I actually thru my own research did do what many others did in here. In the 1st round of that draft I grabbed Reggie Bush at the 1.07 because of PPR....that went OK but he certainly didn't push me over the top. Interestingly at the 2.06 I went McGahee...now Mcgahee is going to be an interesting read in my RB rankings in the next few weeks and I felt he was a safe choice...he was very very very steady all year. Lot of McGahee hype at the moment but at best he has one of a couple rookies under Center and Ogden has retired too.

Now in a PPR league where we start 2 RB, 2WR, and 2 Flex...one would think I should have started drafting a WR in the 3rd round however when I went to make my pick at 3.07 and found Clinton Portis without a home...it was time to grab another "U" RB and I felt even if I had to get Betts later to back him up it was well worth the risk. Portis scored me 275 points roughly for the season. He was really good value and I did enjoy a playoff run in this league. I play in a lot of leagues and maybe I forgot about this one, likely because Portis was taken before I was comfortable in almost all my other leagues. I actually took Betts in the 9th although that was completely unnecassary as we came to find out.

I have been going round and round with people like David Yudkin, Anonymous Bob, Dexter Manley, Fatness, oh there's a ton of people I have fought tooth and nail with in the Portis threads...and while I still maintain his #4 ranking is not indicative of the impact he actually made compared to when you see what his totals were in Denver when he ranked #4 and #5...still in terms of 2007 he was good value for a lot of us.

I have nothing against Portis so I want the board to know that. Do I have a problem with the Washington Offense in general, the new coach, etc...I'll let that go till later in the summer but I'm not thrilled about what they did in the off season.

We banter a lot on these boards, we love to 1 up as many people as we can at times, but sometimes you have to admit when you are wrong, or you just were not thinking clearly. It is possible that I felt Portis was overvalued but that doesn't mean I wouldn't grab him again at a certain point in the 1st/2nd round depending on the make up of my team and what the scoring rules are.

Thanks,

MOP

way to man up MoP. And, FWIW, I have no issue with anyone playing devil's advocate here. Helps stimulate the discussion.

I find it interesting that the two guys MOP took in our league last year were the two guys he didn't want . . . and I apparently talked him into! He and I have debated McGahee and Portis AT LENGTH the past couple of years and he threw out the kitchen sink in terms of reasons why he didn't like them. This was not run of the mill in passing conversation, we're talking detailed discussion and analysis both in threads and lengthy PMs. There's not really a point to be made here, only that it's interesting that on the surface at least MOP still has the ability to both listen and reason . . . which some people might not recognize if they only bumped into some of his (seemingly) off-base comments in one or two threads.

So wait a minute, I'm totally confused.

Did MOP support McGahee and Portis ADP last year or not? Obviously ANY player is draftable at the right time, so I'm just curious if this post is implying that you BLEW it on both Portis and McGahee last year. Is that what is being conveyed? Sorry for being dense today.

MOP was not a big fan of either Portis or McGahee and voiced his conerns and reasons not to draft them. Yet he drafted them anyway.

Right, and in the OP I explained why that was. I wasn't a big fan of McGahee but he was right there week in and week out...in fact I think in some aspects he was even more steady that Portis. But just to move off this for second, I personally look every year for guys in different buckets and tiers that will outperform their ADP, much the same as you. And I guess that is why I said that Portis was not as much value as some felt last season. When I drafted him at the 3.07, at that point I felt the risk of Betts eating into his carries, JC under center, lack of an offensive idetity...at that point I had to pull the trigger as the upside outweighed the downside.Try to follow my irradic thought patterns for a minute. I am constantly looking for guys that I am "counting" on to perform...meaning there might be a pack of QBs all in the same group of 10-20 in the ADP/Rank...but I don't like but 2 of them. If I draft one of those 2, then I am betting they will be the guys that lift out of that group. matt Hasselbeck last season was that guy for me. I was not thinking when I grabbed Hasselbeck that he was just as good as any of the other QBs in that tier...I was expecting top10 numbers from him and that is what I got for most if not all of the season. Does this make sense?BTW: Same league I drafted Wes Welker in the 12th orund...I wasn't expecting 100+ receptions but I was banking on him filling my WR2/3 spots consistently, and he did. I try to stay away from guys that others refer to as flyers unless they are not flyers to me but guys I truly believe are going to perform. Also it should be noted that my brain works a lot faster than my ability to put pen to paper or fingers to keys, so sometimes I do come across as the mad professor, but in reality when I have a chance to sit down and really think about things, I usually can be persuaded unless the evidence supports my position.

So if I have this right, you just lived the "don't love anyone, don't hate anyone; everyone has value" approach. In other words, at 3.07, in this scoring format, he presented too much for you to pass on, in spite of your earlier protests.

It that is it, then big kudos to you. I have yet to be that analytical in my approach, and suffer mightily for it.

I believe that sums it up pretty good.
