Anyone know any further info on Aaron Schobel. I know he has some ligament damage in foot which can be a problem and was walking in a boot last week. Do they expect him to return anytime soon? I fear this could linger a while and not sure he is gonna be himself the rest of the year

Hearing some reports that the injury could involve a toe, too. That's never a good thing for a rush defensive end. Those injuries are tough to recover from whether you're an edge rusher who needs an explosive first step or a more technical rusher who must play with a lot of leverage to beat an offensive lineman.

Rud, or other Bills homers, you hear anything about a timetable for when he will return? What are the chances he'll be back for week 14?

no word, but I don't think there's a lot of optimism surrounding him these days. there must be some hope since they haven't just put him on IR yet, but it seems like a longshot that he'd be very effective if he does manage to return this season.

Schobel won’t need surgery

Chris Brown, Lead Journalist

Posted Dec 3, 2008

Aaron Schobel doesn’t know for sure if he’ll be able to play on Sunday against Miami, but he does know his ailing foot has improved to the point where surgery won’t be necessary.

“I’m hopeful that I’ll play before the year is out,” said Schobel. “I’m not saying this week, but it’s definitely improving and that’s the main thing because this is a deal that can (affect) you for two years. At this point it’s almost a career issue. You get up in age and the (stuff) starts bothering you all the time… I don’t know. I’m glad the thing is going to heal on its own and I won’t have to have surgery.”

Schobel has been on the shelf for a while with a lingering foot injury. On Wednesday his time on the sidelines came to an end as he took to the practice field with his teammates for the first time in two months and worked with the starting unit.

“He came back after a long time and he worked pretty hard” said head coach **** Jauron. “We’ll wait and see how it responds and go through the next couple of days. But he did go through the practice and he did push it pretty hard.”

Schobel felt it was a positive first step, but doesn’t believe he’s all the way back just yet.

“For the most part, but on some plays it bothered me,” said Schobel. “It’s definitely better than it was four weeks ago and eight weeks ago. So it’s improving. As far as it being 100 percent it’s not.”

His approach is to see how the foot holds up through the practice week.

“I guess we’re going to take it day to day,” he said. “If I feel by Friday I’ve gotten better where I feel stronger then I’ll try to go. If I feel it’s really bothering me and I have to pull up all the time it ain’t worth playing because I’ll screw up the team.”

Schobel admitted the one time he really tried to push it was when he was forced to pull up in practice calling it the only negative in his first practice work.

Having been off the foot for some time, Schobel isn’t concerned about game shape being an issue if he’s able to play on Sunday.

“I think if I had to play in Miami game shape would be an issue, but when it’s cool or inside it usually doesn’t bother me,” he said. “I’m sure I’m going to get tired, but we always rotate and we’ll rotate and if I’m tired I’ll come out and go from there.”

Making the decision on playing Sunday is still a couple of days off, but minutes after Wednesday’s practice concluded he already committed to practicing Thursday.

“I’m going to go through practice again (Thursday) and see if it’s better, worse or the same and we’ll make a decision based off of what I tell them,” Schobel said. “If I feel like it can hold up I should be able to play. If it won’t I probably won’t. I guess in the end it’s my decision, but there were some plays that felt good.”

Meanwhile, Schobel appears headed for the injured reserve list due to the ligament injury in his foot that has kept him off the field the past eight games.

Bills coach **** Jauron stopped just short of confirming that Schobel will be put on the shelf, but he made it clear that's the likely outcome for the team's top pass rusher.

"He's seen all the specialists in the recent weeks," Jauron said. "We've done all the tests. He's tested it on the field. It just didn't really respond the way he wanted it to.~

Schobel practiced one day last week, but the foot still was bothering him.

"He pushed it pretty hard and the foot was sore," Jauron said. "The foot has been sore. He didn't feel great on it. At this point in time … we're considering all the options, and there aren't that many. He could go on practicing but it just didn't appear like it was getting any better."

Schobel played the first five games of the season but was forced to the sidelines due to a tear in a ligament in the foot that attaches to the big toe.

So he has been taking a roster spot for 2 months while not playing before they decide to IR him in week 15 while Crowell was put on IR before the season because he would have missed 2-4 weeks and taken up a roster spot (and players are healthier then than in season). Makes sense to me

One of the reason the entire coaching staff will be canned this offseason IMO.

:goodposting: what really annoys me is that nobody in the media has picked up on this either.

Jauron said Friday that there is a possibility defensive end Aaron Schobel might need surgery to repair his injured left foot, which caused him to be placed on the season- ending injured reserve list.

Schobel almost completely tore a ligament near the bottom of his left big toe — it’s termed a Lisfranc injury — just before halftime in the Week Four game at St. Louis. He completed that game and the next one at Arizona. He was able to practice last week, but the Bills decided to shut him down after there was no improvement.

“As of the end of last week, he really didn’t look good,” Jauron said. “He tried to push it and it never felt good to him and it got sore.”

Jauron added that the team doctors hope the injury will heal itself. If it doesn’t, Schobel will need surgery soon so he’s back in time for the start of next season. Recovery from Lisfranc surgery takes up to six months.

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney had the same injury last year, but his was more severe.
