Adding free agents during the playoffs (1 Viewer)

I play in two leagues. One league only allows you to pick up a players back-up in the playoffs if that player gets hurt during a game. The other league allows you to pick up a free agent in the playoffs with a penalty (-5 points).

Does your league allow free agent pick ups during the playoffs? Does it work well?

Our MFL league is not quite like yours but we allow FA pickups throughout the playoffs with no penalties. The teams that did not make the playoffs who are still playing in the Toilet Bowl have to use the players they have on their roster and cannot add any FA's.

We used to only allow pickups if you could not field a complete team due to injury. You could not make a pickup if you had healthier players even if they stunk backups etc.

A few years ago we implemented 1 free pick up during the playoffs to active teams only. You still can get a free pickup due to injury.

I have two leagues that do and one league that doesn't.

The league that doesn't is a full roster dynasty / contract league so I believe the thinking is to not let teams eliminated from the playoffs get a competitive advantage for next year by potentially dropping "one year" players for up and comers.

I only play in redrafts and don't see any reason to prevent non-eliminated teams from doing add/drops. Why play weeks 14-16 differently than week 13?

Dynasty/keeper leagues definitely have other considerations.

Keeper league. Owners in the playoffs are allowed to use the waiver wire as normal. Owners not in the playoffs can only pick up players who are on IR & out for the season, as potential keepers for next year (Dez Bryant, Ryan Grant, Tom Brady in 2008, etc.)

Yes. Both of my leagues allow transactions for teams during the playoffs for teams that are still alive. We have pretty small rosters so there is not a lot of room to stockpile players.

Our keeper league allows any free agent pickup. If teams eliminated from the playoffs want to pick up players from the IR, that is just fine. Helps bring about parity, as we keep 6 each year.

My league allows pick ups by playoff teams, but, any dropped player is not allowed to be pick up by another team. Has worked very well.

Absolutely. Was down to Gates in one league but Daniels had been left for dead months ago and you sure betcha I grabbed him this week. You have to allow owners to be able to make moves in the playoffs. I find all kinds of stuff left on the WW when owners are making desperate HR moves to try and close the gap in the final weeks of the season.

In my main keeper league, we allow transactions in the playoffs, unchanged from the regular season. The only caveat we have is that keeper options are based on your end of the regular season roster ( after all games played week 13 ).

We've toyed with closing transactions, but determined it is better to allow those in the playoffs to manage their roster as they see fit, not change how they do business in the playoffs.

Nope. Last waivers run week before the playoffs.

Roster are 19 deep and the starting lineup is 8 deep.

Still, every year, somebody says they didn't remember that waivers end for the playoffs, even though it's been that way for the twelve years of the league. Whatever.

My keep 2 league allows even teams not in the playoffs to continue to pick-up and drop players. Usually the teams that have been knocked out don't do any pick-ups, I do though to grab any players that may be a potential keeper. The teams that don't do this are letting the playoff teams get a jump on next season as they stay active on the waiver wire.

Free Agent pick ups used as a keeper count as a 9th round pick, the 2nd a 10th rounder. I've grabbed Avery, Finley, Stafford and Romo. While I can keep DeSean Jackson for a 4th round pick for one more year, I'm strongly leaning towards keeping Romo and Finley for 9th & 10th round picks that I can keep for 3 more years.
