Adrian Peterson update (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
The Star Tribune reports Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (knee) will take the next step today in his recovery from a right knee injury. Speaking after the Vikings' 29-22 victory over Oakland, Peterson said he will begin running on an underwater treadmill this morning. He could resume running on land as early as Wednesday. "I'm going to get in the pool and try to get my leg strength back underneath me," Peterson said. "We'll see how it feels each day and go from there." The team has not ruled out Peterson from playing in this Sunday's game at the New York Giants. But a more realistic target date is the Dec. 2 game against Detroit. Barring a setback, Peterson should get back on the field no later than the nationally televised Dec. 17 game against Chicago.

Having both A-Pete and Chester, the only thing I don't want is a full-fledged time share, especially entering playoff time. I hope that Peterson either returns to full strength and resumes the workhorse role, or he discovers that he just isn't right and shuts it down. But nothing in between that. I'm sure those of you who own both of them agree with me.

:loco:

I got very luck and picked Chester Taylor up last week. 10 guys in my league could have gotten him ahead of me and nobody tried. I hope AD takes his time and comes back strong. I am with you on the "one of the other issue. :hot:

Since Childress can now say 'I told you so' about ADP getting hurt with the lion's share of carries, I think if he returns this season, it will be a RBBC at best.

Peterson has proven he can put up Top 10 fantasy numbers even in a timeshare. If he does return that's the least of my concerns about him.

Waiting anxiously to hear how his running on "dry land" went.....

Dry land, huh? Opposed to wet land....that would be considered mud.

The Vikings are idiots if they rush him back.
I'm sure they'll seek your (professional) opinion before doing anything rash.
Seriously they are idiots if they rush him back...but only to an extent. I wouldn't want him to play this week vs the Giants. It's already a tough matchup for Minny so let CT take the pounding. But after that: DET, SF, and CHI. I see no reason not to play him in those games if he's deemed ready to go. AD wants to play so it's entirely up to the coaches/doctors on clearing him. If he had it his way he would have returned to play in the GB game.

 If he's truly 100% healed then let him play. However I can't imagine anyone being 100% healed a few weeks after 2+ grade ligament tear.

I think all posters on this thread need to disclose if they have ADP or CT or both on their squads, and/or a Viking fan and/or Viking hater.

That being said, as someone who doesn't own Taylor, but ADP... I want him back soon but safely, so as to create an RBBC and leave the Taylor owner crippled. Maybe week 14'ish. Not sure how long Taylor is signed with the Vikes, but getting ADP some more NFL experience going into next year, is a good thing.

[disclosure: ADP owner, CT non-owner, neutral Viking fan]

Just because my information is biased doesn't mean it's worthless, but I do understand your point.[disclosure: ADP owner, CT owner, bandwagon Vikes Fan, ADP man crush for 5+ years now]

The Star Tribune reports Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (knee) almost certainly will need more than one game to rest his injured right knee. HC Brad Childress said Monday that while Peterson is progressing in his rehabilitation from a torn lateral collateral ligament suffered Nov. 11 at Green Bay, it's "a long shot" the rookie will be ready for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Peterson, who did not play in the Vikings' 29-22 victory over Oakland on Sunday but continues to lead the NFL with 1,081 rushing yards, was scheduled to run on an underwater treadmill Monday. If the team's medical staff is satisfied with how Peterson's knee responds, it's possible he could begin running on land Wednesday. A probable best-case scenario would be for him to return Dec. 2 against Detroit. Childress said when Peterson does come back, he will wear a knee brace. According to Childress, Peterson's intense rehab schedule has been going for six to eight hours a day. "Whether it is on the elliptical or these machines that they have in there," Childress said. "It's almost like playing a video game with your leg, literally." It remains uncertain when Peterson will return to practice. Asked if Peterson's potential availability for Sunday might be a game-time decision, Childress said: "You have to get back [to practice] and get your timing. To be able to get back and practice, you've got to be able to do the things it takes to practice, so no, I would say it's a long shot right now to get back there [for Sunday], but we'll see. He's surprised me before."

There are injuries that are "dangerous" to play with, meaning that the player has a statistically significantly greater chance of a more servere injury by playing ( a concussion, for example) and injuries that can be painful but are not deemed to create an appreciably larger chance of a more severe injury.

I have no sort of expertese or access to know what catagory this injury falls into, but it's just food for thought as to whether the Vikings are "morons" or not for considering playing Peterson again this year.

We are having some trouble selling tickets, so that may be some of the underlying motivation. Not a good enough of a reason, but 'reason' and the Vikings management have not been good friends.

Since some decisionmaking by the Vikings has been questionable in the past, I hope the underwater treadmill is in shallow water.

As a non ADP or CT owner and a non Vikes fan I would be OK with this. The ADP owner is in the other conference and looks to make the playoffs. I just locked up a playoff berth last week so I would be OK if a potential SB opponent had a RBBC in Minnesota rather than the outright starter of either ADP or Chester. As a realist though I would say that I agree with LHucks (did I just say that? ;) ). This guy looks to be something really, really special. Like possibly better than LT. Are they seriously going to risk his future in a season when they are not going to make the playoffs?

Wednesday update from RotoWorld:

Adrian Peterson will take part in at least a portion of Vikings' practice today.

The team will have a better idea of his return date after seeing how his torn LCL reacts to a day of practice. His return to practice doesn't mean he will play in Week 12, but it's a great sign for his chances of returning soon, likely in Week 13.

 Even if the "portion" is riding the stationary bike on the sidelines, I'll take it for now.

I'm shocked/surprised he's this 'close'.... that Dec 2 seems more likely.

he might be "back back" by weeks 15 and 16.... Chester looked good, but it was the Raiders, can't imagine was ADP woulda done vs them... *sigh*

for real! i was thinking that too. he would have done some serious damage to the Raiders and the record books.

My co-worker is typically very up to date with the latest information. He informed me the TEAM doctor said the Vikings could be playing with ADP's future by not shutting him down...has anyone else heard this?

Perhaps he's confused and was mentioning the 3rd party guy that made those remarks several days ago but I wanted to check with the shark pool.

If the team doctor went on record with this it seems very close to violating HIPAA patient confidentiality + why would the Vikings doctor say this publicly if he wanted to keep his job?Now it's possible there was some kind of leak to the press that I haven't heard about, but I'm guessing he got confused.

If the TEAM doctor said it, then it would be an official team statement... to which you'd see posted everywhere.Unless/otherwise, if it was said of the record... just like the post of someone's sisters uncles brother who gave ADP his MRI and said it turned out good.

UPDATE: Childress confirmed this afternoon that Peterson will practice and said he was no longer classifying him as a longshot for Sunday’s game.

“I’m told it’s the next step in the progression,” Childress said of Peterson getting back on the practice field today. “We’ll just keep an eye on him out there. … We’ll see where he’s at by the end of the week.”

I have to say something is really wrong with this. Either it wasn't a 2+ tear like reported by the team and doctors.....or this is all just hype to sell tickets. There is no way this guy could possibly play this week if it was as serious a tear as we were told.

Yes, they are stupid if they are in any way pushing him or ignoring the advice of doctors who have examined ADP. Dr. Andrews said it was a week to week deal, so what's happening is not necessarily inconsistent with that.

I'll be very surprised if he plays this week. I think that even the boneheads running the Vikings are smart enough to be conservative on this.

guys, this is ADP we're talking about. Would you doubt that Superman could come back from a +2 tear after fighting Zod? Would you doubt that Spiderman would come back from a +2 tear after fighting Doc Oc? Come on, its ADP!!! :obc:

I made a mistake in saying Peterson must have had a good day at practice. The quote from Childress came from before practice. I'll edit my last post.

It doesn't say he's going to play this weekend. It simply says that he's not being classified as a longshot anymore. That can mean any number of things, including them already classifying him as out, or as highly unlikely. I would doubt he plays this week.

I liked this part :obc:

While this does not mean he will play Sunday against the New York Giants, it is a highly encouraging sign that Peterson will be back on the field on the short end of his recovery timetable.

Who ever said it was a "serious tear"?Yes, it's a knee injury with torn ligaments, which will always be a "serious" injury. But as far as tears go, it's a VERY minor injury.

Marc Schlereth (who has had something like 19 knee surgeries) said if a lineman tore his LCL, they would tape it up and throw him back in the game.

People are overreacting because of the word "tear." This is not a common injury, and as such, his recovery time will not be typical of players that have knee injuries.

As far as I understood it and from what I read over the past couple of weeks a 2+ tear for an explosive runningback who puts major stress on his ligaments by making major cuts......it is a serious tear.
