Aging Men: what I do to feel better and younger (comment, critique, question, flame away) (1 Viewer)

I flip flop between the two below depending on how much sun exposure I plan to get.  The Get Mr. one is more expensive and thicker. The Nivea is more spreadable and "moisturizing" but less spf

----

I have "Get Mr. The Daily" lotion which is a moisturizer, spf 30 sunscreen and aftershave all in one.   It's hard to find good moisturizer with SPF protection that doesn't make your face all white (from the sunscreen).   This is a good one.

Nivea Men Maximum Hydration is also a good one that is a bit cheaper.  But, it's only spf 15.

My nighttime non-spf moisturizer (after night shower/face wash) is Arbonne RE9 Advanced.   This is great stuff.
Try this. I hope you don't like it. It's pricey.

I love it but I prefer to get it as a gift. Hard to stomach the cost.

Question....do you actually work out once per week....3.5 hrs every Saturday?  Or do you just say "F it" because it's not as good as 30 mins. per day every day?

My stance is....then commit to just working out hard as hell every Saturday.  It's still way better than not working out at all.   Then M thru F just incorporate some simple at home stretching, pushups and situps before you sit down to relax for the night.  10-15 mins max.

I'm all over the place week to week, month to month, year to year.  Having a set routine is both appealing and also something I'd never want.  When I'm doing good I'll be every day or other day.  But when I'm doing bad - I'm more "F it".  I may give a real routine a try and see how it goes.

Everyone is different, but for me I'm pretty routine based and it just kind of becomes a way of life.   If I'm all over the place I tend to come up with excuses to not do it or convince myself there's something better to do instead.

I'm definitely not one of those guys that looks forward to working out or gets a big rush while doing it.  I love the feeling when I'm DONE.

One suggestion is to just go with your initial thought you posted which is probably how you consciously think about it...so don't fight it.  Commit to 3 hrs every Saturday morning at minimum.   If you feel like working out other days for the hell of it, then do it, but don't pressure yourself.    Just put pressure on that Saturday morning and the idea "you'd love to just be able to do it once a week".   Then you'll feel accomplished and proud, which is half the battle with working out.

Thanks GB!  What is it that you like so much about it?   Just goes on and into the skin well?  Smells good?

I don't believe it has spf so just extra moisturizing, correct?

It's actually called The Flex Belt and I edited the original post to avoid confusion.

From the website...

With The Flex Belt, you can train your abs even if you're too busy or too tired for a traditional workout. Our clinically demonstrated, patented medical-grade technology stimulates the nerves that make your muscles contract and relax. As a result, you get an effective abdominal workout that targets all the muscles in your abdomen.
I find these electrical stimulus gadgets that are supposed to tone muscle hard to believe.

The other part of your regimen I would find hard to follow is your diet. You eat almost nothing at breakfast and a smoothie for lunch. That wouldn’t give me enough fuel for a 1 hour cardio workout. I’ve been told as we age we are better off eating a good breakfast, nice sized lunch and a lighter dinner. They say you are fueling your body when it is more active and limiting your calories when you are more sedentary and before sleep.

I definitely agree with your focus on regular exercise, stretching, hydration and moisturizers with spf.

Same with me. I'm in between training programs right now and it's super easy for me to just say F it and roll over. That's why you have to build up that mental fortitude to take that first step. I know my "trigger" points that will delay or make me just skip a workout altogether so I try to avoid them. I'm slow getting going in the mornings. I have two cups of coffee, a routine of checking news pages then I'm ready to go. If I run across something interesting to read, it's very easy to justify in my head I'll make up the workout some other time and tap out. I try to email myself a link to the story for future reading and got out to the pain cave.

Really, we’re deep into page 2 and no jokes about the Kegel exercises.  Man this FFA has gone down hill fast.
Don't knock it til you try it.  Been doing them daily for 6 months and my lady friends approve.

The stimulus gadgets are tough to buy into, but just the mechanism of them makes sense...it contracts your muscles repeatedly for 30 mins straight.  It basically is doing the same thing as a crunch (compressing the muscle).   But, it works for me.  I don't have a defined 6 pack, but my abs are flat and toned and I don't do anything with my core other than the Flex Belt.

The diet thing I totally get..  I've never been a breakfast guy my whole life so I've just become used to not really eating much of anything until lunch.

The smoothie I make is a lot....42 oz.  One could easily make it for breakfast...have half of it (21 oz) and then put the other half in the fridge until Lunch.   Snack on some almonds or banana in between. Just an idea.

I do my lower back stretches by severely leaning forward for extended periods while doing a #2.

Problems with lower back spasms have disappeared and I don't need to buy a Squatty Potty.

Yep, exactly.  I'm the same way in the mornings....I just can't workout in the mornings.  I've tried all gung ho and then it just fizzles off.  Like you, I know myself and what I can stick with.

I have it pretty good in that I work from home and my mornings are very busy but afternoons get quiet.  I legitly block my work calendar from 3-5pm every afternoon with "workout"  (private so nobody can see, lol).   I have a nice gym at my apartment complex so I can just walk over and I randomly check work email on my phone.  If some sort of an emergency comes up I'm back at my apt office/laptop in 5 minutes.

Again, not everyone can have this setup, but just an example of how to devote time to it and find something in your lifestyle to allow and prioritize working out.

Did you mention your lipid profile or blood pressure? You can look healthy on the outside and still have hypertension or a high level of bad cholesterol.

When I do the testosterone therapy they take my blood every 3 months to do an overall check. All my numbers are perfect range.

I could pull papers if curious of my actual numbers for reference.

Impressive routine.   Heavy Patrick Bateman vibes.

How long have you been doing the test/gh routine?  Any side effects except for feeling awesome?  I'm hoping to hold out on that til I get to about 50 or so.  Elevated test is probably the fastest way to feeling better/younger.

About 7 months. No negative side effects at all.  I do it twice a week 100mL each time. (200mL a week). That’s the most they recommend per week.

It’s not cheap ($250 per month) but well worth it for me for the results, and heavily monitored with regular blood tests.  That cost includes Cyp Testosterone and all addl needed vitamins per blood test results (for me Vitamin D and B12).

I’m turning 60 this year.

My solution to stolen Amazon packages and being winded after climbing three flights of stairs to my apt was to marry a woman in a full service elevator building.

Agree.

You have the physical and nutritional bases covered but if you really want to feel better...

  • Go out of your way to help one person in need.
  • Get dirty by tending a garden.
  • Find a beautiful peaceful places in nature and go there as often as you can.
  • Get a pet and become buds.
  • Make your own path.
All good thoughts, and appreciate the step back. I do have a 2 yr old dog and he’s the best (great work from home companion) …we take two walks a day around college campuses, lakefront, etc so that covers a few of your bullets.   I try my best to appreciate all my surroundings and just be good to people (part of my positive thinking and what the book “The Magic” pushes to rewire your brain to avoid negativity)

I didn't know it was a thing but in the meantime I'll be googling kegel routines for men 🚀

I'm going to be looking into this. Well worth it to me for $250/month if it works like you say. Crazy the amount my libido and general energy has dropped in my late 30s.

Currently doing some supplements and lifting heavy weights 4x/week. It's working to a noticeable but not overly significant extent.

Yeah, see this is an example of advice that does nothing for me (I genuinely mean no offense here). I know this may work for some but something like "make your own path" doesn't actually mean ####.

comes a point in life when all the positivity in the world wont serve one as well as a little humility because, when all those rituals, ablutions & affirmations get one to an advanced age, one discovers that life doesnt allow one to pretend all the way thru. i'm famous among my peeps for saying that i've been seventeen since i was three, so you can bet i tried. the ghosts of fun and high living are as real as those of loved ones and lost ops and haunt more bitterly.

that's when one finds out that the give is the get that's reliable all the way thru and old people who dont find that out til theyre old will find that harder to manage than sleeping all night without getting up to pee. so let enough reality leak in between your pretends, so there's some there there when all else fails, because it will. and not even God can help you then.

Author David Foster Wallace, in the greatest commencement speech ever given:

"...here’s something else that’s weird but true: in the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship–be it Christ or Allah, be it Yahweh or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, the Four Noble Truths or some inviolable set of ethical principles–is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive.

If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough.

Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you.

On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness.

Worship power, you will end up feeling weak and afraid, and you will need ever more power over others to numb you to your own fear. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart, you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. But the insidious thing about these forms of worship is not that they’re evil or sinful, it’s that they’re unconscious. They are default settings.

They’re the kind of worship you just gradually slip into, day after day, getting more and more selective about what you see and how you measure value without ever being fully aware that that’s what you’re doing.

And the so-called real world will not discourage you from operating on your default settings, because the so-called real world of men and money and power hums merrily along in a pool of fear and anger and frustration and craving and worship of self. Our own present culture has harnessed these forces in ways that have yielded extraordinary wealth and comfort and personal freedom.

The freedom all to be lords of our tiny skull-sized kingdoms, alone at the centre of all creation. This kind of freedom has much to recommend it. But of course there are all different kinds of freedom, and the kind that is most precious you will not hear much talk about much in the great outside world of wanting and achieving…. The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.

That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think. The alternative is unconsciousness, the default setting, the rat race, the constant gnawing sense of having had, and lost, some infinite thing.

Good luck. Honest -

Don’t go to your general doctor for this though…general medical field thinks anything above 300 is normal range. I go to a specialist (Forward Healthy Lifestyle is the name of my place) and they know the optimal number should be at 800 for guys our age and prescribe what is needed to gradually get there.

There’s definitely sex and libido benefits but it also really helps with metabolism, energy, lean muscle mass and sleep. All of those things are invaluable to me at this stage in my life.

I’m 6’2”, 210lbs and in the 7 months I started this I’ve remained same weight but dropped 7lbs of fat mass and gained 7lbs of lean mass. Have better energy and feel “clearer” and sleep like a champ.

Was it you that was putting jeans in the freezer? Still doing that?

Are these kegel exercises sort of like edging?  :oldunsure:

:lmao:   just a bit of :style: shtick 10 years ago.  No I need freezer space for frozen fruit for my lunch smoothies now!

Kegel exercises are basically that muscle you flex when you want to stop urine flow.  Just exercise that muscle…squeeze tight and hold for as long as you can. Do about 10 times.  At first you can hold about 2 seconds…I’m up to about 10 seconds now. :kegel flex:

Why would men do Kegel exercises?

- Increase your sexual pleasure through greater control of ejaculation and improved orgasm sensation.

- Improve urinary or fecal incontinence.

- Manage prostate pain and swelling that occurs with prostatitis and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

I consider myself pretty healthy, at preferred weight, good cardiovascular etc.

1.  I rarely drink alcohol anymore, maybe 4-5 drinks per month.

2.  Cut out most sugar, sans desserts

3.  Eat salads for lunch 3 times per week

4.  Play hoops and pickleball for vitamin D and exercise, one of the two almost every day

5.  I monitor my weight pretty closely so once I gain a few  pounds I go back to a lean diet.

I feel better than I did in my 30s (now 47)...I drank a lot in my 30s and ate like crap and didn't exercise regularly.

So I am 52 and feel 72. With my life the way it is, there is no way I can do half of what you do. What I really want is a simple (I mean basic) stretching routine to start. I just real feel my flexibility is shot.
I need to lose 25 pounds (beer gut) but I need to start with getting moving. Any thoughts?

- LUNCH: Healthy Smoothie full of fruits, veggies, collagen powder, protein powder, etc.   (42 oz and 580 calories)
I've posted this Smoothie recipe in the official Smoothie thread, but if anybody curious.   I literally look forward to having this everyday...tastes so good to me.  And so much goodness packed into it.    It's about $150 investment to get all of the powders off of Amazon but they will last you probably 3 months.   That price is comparable to ten trips to Panera for lunch so ultimately a good investment both money and health.

It makes 42 oz and I have it all for lunch, but you breakfast guys can drink 21 oz for breakfast, put remaining in the fridge and have the other 21 oz for lunch.

offdee's Fruit Smoothie  (makes 42 oz, 580 calories total)

-          1 cup water

-          1/2 cup Cran-Apple juice

-          1 tbsp raw apple cider vinegar w/mother

-          1.5 tbsp whole grain rolled oats

-          1 tbsp ground flaxseed (REFRIGERATE)

-          1.25 TEASPOON Sacred 7 mushroom powder

-          1 scoop Amazing Grass antioxidant (Sweet Berry)

-          1 scoop Vital Proteins collagen & peptides powder (unflavored)

-          1 scoop Isopure protein powder (Vanilla)

-          One handful of spinach

-          Half large avocado

-          1 red apple (Fuji)

-          1 cup frozen berry mix (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries)

-          One large handful of ice cubes for coldness

This right here is something all should instill once they get to their desired weight.

Weigh yourself every morning...and if you are 2 or more lbs over what your desired weight is, then just cut back a bit for a day or two.   If you're 2 or more lbs under your desired weight, then have an extra cookie without feeling bad about it.

It's SO much easier to drop a pound or two in short order versus letting yourself go for a couple weeks and then trying to cut 5-10 lbs.

Yes!

So, if I was you this is what I'd do....

- I'd find a specialty clinic that does the Testosterone therapy for men (usually it's the medi-spa places that do botox, facials, cool sculpting, etc).   Not necessarily for the Testosterone treatment, but ask them to do a full blood test to find out where all of your levels are at (vitamin deficiencies, testosterone, etc).   For my place it was like $150 for this full bloodwork and their professional recommendations.   You'll get a good idea of things that may be making you feel like an old man and decide if you want to invest in those quick fix injections.

- Every morning (7 days a week), the first thing to do when you get out of bed is set a timer on your phone for 10 minutes and stretch.   Concentrate on your hamstrings, lower back and shoulders.   Don't rush through it....2 sets of each area and hold for a count of 5 when you get to the point you can't stretch anymore

- Buy a 32 oz insulated mug (if you don't already have one) and fill that up with cold water from the fridge (no ice) right after you brush your teeth.   Make sure to drink all of it empty by Noon.    Then after lunch, do the same thing and make sure to drink all empty by 5pm.

- Do you have a spot in your neigborhood that you like to go to just sit?  or a nearby park?  If so, just walk for 30 minutes every single day to that spot.  Take a break to just take in the spot and then walk back.   Make sure to put a little umph in your step when your walking...a bit extra arm swings, work up a little lather.

- I can't recommend enough about substituting Lunch with a healthy smoothie like I posted above.   So much in that one drink that is good for you. Plus, the Apple Cider Vinegar I've noticed helps curb my appetite a bit.  I feel full after that drink and don't crave as much garbage for whatever reason now.

- One other thing to consider is a membership at a place like Massage Envy ($50 per month) and request more of a deep tissue, stretching type of session. They can really focus on tight spots, take kinks out and just overall something to look forward to.

That's all I'd recommend for now to get started and have it be manageable and not overwhelming where you can't stick to it.   Once this becomes part of your daily routine and lifestyle you can start adding onto it.

Hope this helps.

I'm about to turn 49 and feel all of this.  I am probably the world's most inflexible human.  I need to lose at LEAST 25, if not 50.

My therapist urges me to do so, too.  I just don't find that I have the time.  Could I go to the gym right now?  Probably.  But I just worked for 8 hours and I want to decompress and spend time with my kids.

I think I'm going to start easy and make the time every Saturday.  That is... until college football starts, then I REALLY run out of time.

I posted above some ideas for Courtjester that don't involve the gym and not overly time consuming.  Just gotta commit to something healthy to start or there will always be an excuse.  Once you see some positive results it motivates you to prioritize more.

Thanks. Would be interested in hearing a lot more on this and your research.

Do our resident Medical folks and folks like @Terminalxylem have thoughts here? I normally get leery when it's in the "The regular medical community is wrong about this". Would be interested in thoughts there.

I don’t think they are “wrong”, I believe it’s the thought that as you age you lose testosterone and for whatever reason the 300 number is where they’ve drawn that line for a man of any age that something should be done to help.  20 yr olds naturally have 800+ testosterone so the idea of 40+ yr olds matching that is “unnatural” so it’s not pushed as much in general medical community.

Thanks.  @Terminalxylem what's your opinion on this with normal 40 - 50 year old men supplementing testosterone with "specialist" medical people?
