i'm sure applying for Barbie house membership is high on the bucket list for black girls.. why are we looking for a problem?

Lotta people confusing "ridicule" with "outrage" here. Seems to be an epidemic these days.
Yeah, honestly it does get a bit confusing when NCC acts like this video has set back civil rights.
Eh, I see him saying this video illustrates a problem. That's not the same as saying the video is the problem.

And really, he's the only one even saying that around here. These girls have every right to live with whomever they choose to live with and to put out whatever recruiting video they like. And people have every right to point and laugh at their surreal lack of diversity and the Stepford Wife-ness of it all in 2015. I don't see why any of it- the video or the reaction to it- should really bother anyone.
I'm bothered that you take such a stance.
I'm outraged that my stance bothers you!

If people were only making fun of these vapid bimbos, I'd be right there with them but they were publicly criticized by their university. So yeah, there is definitely people who feel this video is a pretty big problem.

You sir need to be more Stepford Wife-ness (without the breasts though).

I suspect that was because it makes the university look bad and confirms some existing negative perceptions about the place. Gotta try to save face with some PR about how your school isn't actually like that and blah blah blah.

Aren't these sororities suppose to demonstrate a component of service to their community or to mankind? I do not see any service component featured in this recruitment video. I would like to offer to help. I am a senior citizen. They could take some time to visit me, to make sure I am not lonely, that I stay engaged in life.

I can understand outrage more than ridicule, even though I think outrage over the video is misplaced as well. Outrage could arise from the blatant lack of diversity and what that may indicate about institutional prejudice. Not my reaction at all, but I get it. But ridiculing the video? What is there to ridicule about a bunch of young coeds having fun and being happy?

On another note, the statement from the Alabama university official has me totally shuked.

This video is not reflective of UAs expectations for student organizations to be responsible digital citizens. It is important for student organizations to remember what is posted on social media makes a difference, today and tomorrow, on how they are viewed and perceived.
What on earth does the bolded mean?

I've now watched this video several times on a full screen and I think there is plenty of diversity in the video. I saw two girls that could definitely pass for Asian and one that looked like she might have some Latina blood in her. Additionally, I saw two girls that looked like they were size 6 and an additional one that was probably a size 8.

Well, based on the digital aspect, I'm pretty sure its got something to do with Proctology.

It isn't homogenous and its women aren't empty vessels whose value is pretty much entirely tied to their appearance.

Like I said I personally couldn't care less. I wish more sororities put out videos of their members dancing around and flipping their hair. Hair-flipping and college-age girls are two of my favorite things. But that's how the video comes across and that's bad PR for a university.

I really do not get the issue here. Is there a discrimination claim?

I'm no trump, but some of the PC stuff is getting a little out of wack. Is this blonde shaming now? How is that ok with all the fat shaming and slut shaming that isn't allowed in the world now? It's getting ridiculous.

Respectfully, that you watch the video and see "empty vessels whose value is pretty much entirely tied to their appearance" probably says more about you than it does about these women.

Yeah, the pendulum may have swung too far the other way when now white girls are getting reprimanded for being too white.

That's not a fair interpretation of what I said. There's a big difference between saying that these women are "empty vessels whose value is pretty much entirely tied to their appearance" and saying the video portrays them that way. And it clearly does portray them that way- they don't really do anything other than look pretty and flirty. You could put a collection of female Nobel Prize winners in a video doing the same thing and I'd make the same statement.

And I really don't care how they chose to portray themselves. But I can see why a university might have to do go through the motions of saving face after something like that goes viral.

I don't think he's wrong. The video makes Alabama look like, well, how people assume Alabama looks. The University isn't going to want that from a PR perspective.

YEah I don't get it. Great piece of softcore porn. What's the issue. That a bunch of dimwitted sluts prance around hoping for frat ****?

The only reason I'm somehow engaged in this nonsense is that someone asked me about the university condemning it and I said it was probably a PR move because it's a bad look for the university because it portrays a homogenous sorority and says very little about its members beyond flaunting their appearance. I have no idea how that's remotely controversial or debatable. It obviously does that.

So you see women as empty vessels but what them to be more, but really you just want the prancing and hair-flipping?

ETA: This is a joke

I don't think it makes Alaama look like that at all. It makes that particular sorority look like that.

Voted thankfully.

Lily white collections of nymphs is all (white) sororities are and all they are meant to be. This is college. Its about getting wasted and having sex. Especially at Alabama.

There is nothing more to it nor should there be. This video was a perfect reflection of the reality.

And most girls who are looking for that out of college want to be around other hot chicks so they get the attention of the hot frat guys.

I think this country takes itself a wee bit too seriously some of the time.

Why? Multiple people in this thread said that if they were applying to schools now, Alabama would be included. Someone else said they wanted to put on their mangina and pledge Alpha Phi.

I think before anyone comments more on the video in question, you owe it to yourself to view a few other sorority recruitment videos for comparison.
