I've been meaning to post something about this director for awhile but I just saw that The Wackness comes out in limited release in theaters this week and the DVD for All the Boys Love Mandy Lane is also getting released so I figured now would be a good time. I downloaded a DVD screener of Mandy Lane a couple weeks ago and was very surprised by this low budget horror film. It starts out like a typical high school slasher with all the guys in the school set on being the first one to de-virginize the hot girl in school, Mandy Lane, but I was surprised by the way it turned out (I really am not in these type of movies). This was Levine's first feature film from 2006 and is just now finally getting released.
Then coincidentally last week Creative Screenwriting had a screening/Q&A of Levine's new movie (actually his first since Mandy Lane hadn't been released), "The Wackness" starring Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck (the not-so-fat-kid-anymore from "Drake and Josh"). I really liked the movie (a coming-of-age comedy taking place in the summer of 1994 after Peck's character graduates high school). Great performances in the movie - Kingsley not surprisingly was incredible, playing a much different character than usual, and Peck was very good as the "unpopular" pot dealer trying too hard to be cool by using hip-hop slang.
While neither of these movies are Oscar-worthy, I thought I'd give independent film fans a heads up.
