***** ALL-TIME NBA/ABA DRAFT ***** (Scoobus is Champion!) (2 Viewers)

26.05: C Elmore Smith, 1970s

Overpowering physical gifts as a young player. A solid 250 pounds and a legit 7 feet, Smith put up 17 ppg -15 rpg and 18-12 his first two years in Buffalo. The Lakers then traded for Smith to replace the retiring Wilt Chamberlain. Smith's offense was less in need in Los Angeles so he concentrated on the boards and defense. Blocks weren't official NBA stats during his first two seasons in Buffalo, but blocks were counted starting the year he went to L.A. Smith put up a cool 4.9 blocks per over 81 games and set a still-standing NBA record of 17 blocks in one contest (vs Portland, 10/28/1973).

The Lakers later moved Smith in the Kareem-Abdul Jabbar deal with Milwaukee. Smith had remained a double-double guy throughout his two seasons in L.A. and played at that level one more year in Milwaukee (15ppg -11rpg - 3 bpg in 1975-76). Knee problems relegated Smith to a part-time role over his last three NBA seasons, and led to his early retirement at age 30. Nevertheless, Smith ended his career averaging a double-double (13.4 ppg and 10.6 rpg) plus 2.9 blocks per contest.

Time for writeups. Yo Mama selected:

25.16 - Arnie Risen, 60s C

I needed some more size to match up with the bigs of the 60s, and Macauley is more the size of a PF from that decade anyway. Risen gives me another hall of famer to my front court.

Career - 12.0 pts, 9.7 reb, 1.7 ast

Peak - 14.5 pts, 11.4 reb, 2.1 ast

Hall of fame

2x champ (averaged 19.5 and 14.0 in the playoffs for his first)

4x all star

1x all baa

1x all nbl (playing for the Indianapolis Kautskys)

Already taken by Yo Mama at 25.16

My 2010s team is complete (top 5 seasons for each).

PG - Mike Conley

SG - JJ Reddick

SF - Danilo Gallinari

PF - Draymond Green

C - Nikola Jokic

The offense is going to be on-point. Jokic has been the driver for an offense that has been between 4th and 6th best in the NBA each of the last 5 years that has generally been held back by a lack of shooters which will not be an issue here (side note - they are shooting great this year which is why I think Jokic is looking so good). We'll be running the Nuggets offense on steroids - Jokic as the nominal PG with lots of dribble handoffs and inverted PnR creating tons of easy looks for the team. Offensively, we'll be a powerhouse. Defensively, we are not going to be a top defense, but Green is the best possibly defender in the NBA to put next to Jokic, Conley has been one of the most consistent defenders at the position in the decade, and the other three are all a little better than advertised (i.e. slightly below average to average).

Time to fill the last spot for my loaded 70s squad. Yo Mama selected:

26.01 - Campy Russell, 70s SF

There were a couple of other guys I was looking at here, but with Archibald and Goodrich in my 70s backcourt, I needed a bit more size on the wing. Russell was an excellent two way player who could do it all. 2nd best Cavalier SF ever (pretty close to that top guy).  Career cut short from a bad knee injury but put up great numbers before his injury.

Career - 15.8 pts, 4.8 reb, 3.0 ast, 1.0 stl

Peak - 20.1 pts, 6.3 reb, 4.3 ast, 1.4 stl

1x all star

Debating putting this 70s squad as my best in show (over my 10s team).

PG - Tiny Archibald (HOF)

SG - Gail Goodrich (HOF)

SF - Campy Russell

PF - Paul Silas

C - Moses Malone (HOF)

What a Wanzer!

What a Wanzer!
☺️ Enjoyed THIS interview he gave 10 years ago.  Said his high school team won a championship, but he missed a big free throw.  That drove him to practice shooting free throws every day.  Whether it's one of these "made up" players from back in the days or Michael Jordan being cut from his high school team (technically, he was a skinny 15 year old) it's cool to read/hear how almost any failure/rejection only pushes them more.

In that interview he was asked who the greatest player he ever played against was?  "Hooks" (aka, The Wanzer) noted he never really got to face Bill Russell but said it was George Mikan.  In the backcourt specifically he mentioned Bob Cousy.

26.10 - Terry Dischinger, SG 1960s

His ROY stats: 25.5PPG, 8 Reb, 3 Assists on 51% shooting.

3× NBA All-Star (1963–1965)
NBA Rookie of the Year (1963)
NBA All-Rookie First Team (1963)
2× Consensus first-team All-American (1961, 1962)
Consensus second-team All-American (1960)
Second-team Parade All-American (1958)

26.12 Scott Wedman SF 70s

2x All Star, 2x NBA Champ, 1x All Defense

Peak of his career ran 76-83 where averaged 16 points, 7 boards, 2 assists and a steal. Put on one of the best NBA Finals shooting performances of all time going 11 for 11 including 4 threes in game 1 of the 85 Finals.

I finish up my 70s team needed a wing defender and a sharpshooter.

70s squad:

PG Archie Clark

SG Randy Smith

SF Scott Weldman

PF Larry Kenon

C Bob McAdoo

If TIm comes in and takes the guy i have lined up i may literally weep a tear. got 2 ready to spit out here......

25.11 - Nenê, C, 10s

Just have to clear a path for Durant, big fella.
Nene is hugely underrated, I think. He could step out and guard smaller guys a bit (he was ridiculously nibble for a big guy), he was strong enough to beast with the big dudes, he had quick, strong hands, he was great around the basket offensively, was a decent passer, and had a decent jump shot. He was just never flashy and his vertical was fairly pedestrian so he didn't have many big highlights (especially with the other more athletic front court players the Nuggets had in his prime) and he struggled with some injuries earlier on his career.
