***** ALL-TIME NBA/ABA DRAFT ***** (Scoobus is Champion!) (1 Viewer)

My 1980's squad:

PG - Norm Nixon SG - Eddie Johnson SF - Mike Mitchell PF - "Truck" Robinson C - Swen Nater

My size and rebounding is bananas, perimeter defense is excellent and boatloads of scoring.
I mean, aside from them not being very good, that's a great squad.

27.07 - Swen Nater, C, 1980s

Between his ABA and NBA careers he averaged 12.5 points, 11.5 rebounds on 54% shooting. These include his crappy 2 last years with the San Diego Clipper and Lakers.
He once led the ABA in rebounding with 16.4 one year, and the NBA once with 15.

2× ABA All-Star (1974, 1975)
2× All-ABA Second Team (1974, 1975)
ABA Rookie of the Year (1974)
ABA All-Rookie First Team (1974)
NBA rebounding leader (1980)
2× NCAA champion (1972, 1973)
Great rebounder.  If any of you played Statis-Pro basketball, Nater's NBA career rebound number is 38.  Crazy.

You guys can skip me if it gets back around to me. I'll be busy with other basketball related activities today.
EYLive's 80s team 6th man? ☺️

27.11: SF Thurl Bailey, 1980s

Started logging minutes at small forward in his third season when Karl Malone was drafted. Soon developed into a high-minutes sixth man (30+ mpg). Very quick for his frame ... and while he could be vulnerable defending one-on-one on the wing, the mismatches he creates on the other side of the court make Bailey worth it for a squad already possessing three elite on-ball defenders. A peak 19-6 guy, his career per36 was 17.1 ppg, 6.8 rpg, and 1.6 blocks per game.

My 80s team is LOOOOONG:

PG    Lafayette Lever (6'3")
SG    Ron Harper (6'6")
SF    Thurl Bailey (6'11")
PF    Kevin McHale (6'10")
C    Joe Barry Carroll (7'0")

Assuming @higgins is still on skip. So ... @scoobus

28.2 Jim Paxon, SF 80s

I'm moving Cedric Maxwell to PF which was probably his more natural position offensively anyway. Paxon may have been a bit more of a SG due to his size, but stylistically and athletically, he probably fits in better at SF. Made a couple All-Star games and a 2nd Team All-NBA.

PG - ??

SG - Byron Scott

SF - Jim Paxon

PF - Cedric Maxwell

C - ??

Time for writeups. Was sweating this one out since I had zero backup plan for 60s PG after McGuire was taken earlier this round. Yo Mama selected:

27.16 - Andy Phillip, 60s PG

This hall of famer led the league in assists three straight years and was near the top a few more times. He made the postseason every year of his career. Even more impressive, before his pro career Handy Andy was a marine in WWII and fought in Iwo Jima.

Career - 9.1 pts, 4.4 reb, 5.4 ast

Peak (6 year) - 11.4 pts, 6.2 reb, 6.3 ast

HOF

1x champ

2x all nba

5x all star

Was surprised this guy was still around considering some of the more recent 00s picks. Yo Mama selected:

28.01 - David West, 00s PF

A solid, no-nonsense guy who did it all and had an incredible peak in New Orleans and Indiana that was watered down in his later years where he became more of a role player.

Career - 13.6 pts, 6.4 reb, 2.2 ast, 0.7 stl, 0.8 blk

Peak (5 years) - 19.6 pts, 8.1 reb, 2.4 ast, 0.8 stl, 0.9 blk, on 49% / 85% shooting

2x champ

2x all star

Same here.  Was looking at McGuire and Phillip, but saw three teams still needed a 60s PG/SG and didn't want to be left holding the bag from a talent/Hall of Famer perspective.  However, YoMama's 60's squad is now susceptible to undue influences!!!  :moneybag:

Phillip was alleged by one of his Fort Wayne Pistons teammates, George Yardley, to have conspired with gamblers to throw the 1955 NBA Finals to the Syracuse Nationals.  In the decisive seventh game, Phillip turned the ball over with three seconds remaining in the game, enabling Syracuse to win by one point, 92–91.

Cue the little kid from Eight Men Out "Say it ain't so Joe?!" 😄

Great value.  Spent too much time myself trying to figure out if I could justify him as a SF, but I couldn't do it.  There was so much talent at the 2000's SF/PF spots...which should make for some interesting debates.

That’s how good he was. He makes one mistake and people think he’s in the bag. He was a Marine at Iwo Jima!  So much for supporting the troops.

28.10 - Dino Radja - PF/C/1990's

I know he wasn't in the NBA for long but he excelled in those years and at this point a 17/8/2 average is damn good.

28.08 Tom Sanders – SF/PF 1960s and prior aka “Satch”

  • Hall of Famer, 8x NBA Champion with the 60s Celtics Dynasty, NBA All-Defensive team
  • Sanders' eight championships are tied for third most in NBA history (behind Bill Russell & Sam Jones)
  • Played 13 seasons, all with Boston, consistently finishing very well in defensive categories, rebounds, and FT%
  • After retiring, he served as a head coach for Harvard Crimson and the Boston Celtics
  • He was the first African-American to serve as a head coach of any sport in the Ivy League
  • Founded the Rookie Transition Program - the first such program in any major American sport

I know, right?  Mistakes in The Finals get overanalyzed.  He and J.R. Smith have a lot in common.
Plus he was probably only making 50 cents a game back then and had to work at a tannery on the side. I don’t blame him for looking for a little extra scratch.

28.05: PG Micheal Williams, 90s
By the way, who dis?  There is no one with that name on basketball ref.
Check that spelling - Mr. Williams spells his first name with the "e" before the "a". Here's his basketballreference page.

Played with six teams, his early-90s prime with Indiana and Minnesota. His peak years were his age 25 & 26 seasons -- 15 ppg, 8.5 apg, and 2.5 steals per game. He fell maybe 10% off those stats the following year for the Timberwolves when foot injuries began taking their toll. Between the 1994-95 and 1998-99 seasons, he played in only 37 games, including missing the entire 1996-97 season.

Williams never did develop a 3-ball in the NBA, but he was an all-timer in free throw shooting. He still holds the NBA record for consecutive free throws made (97). He also made the All-NBA Defensive team with the Pacers in 1991-92.

Awesome - didn’t even notice the spelling.  Sorry for giving you grief.

I had West in my queue, was between him and Chandler for 2000s. Went with Tyson's defense. My 2000s team will beat the other 2000s teams 75 to 70.

So does Jayrod
I mean need in that I have to pick a 5th player. But all the guys at that spot have been the same to me basically the whole draft.

90s seem like far and away the most overvalued decade we have. Outside of Pantheon guys, I think almost every player (except Petrovic, Horace, and Vin perhaps jumping to my mind) felt overdrafted to me.

By the way, Frosty and Ilov80s both said they can skipped. We can @ them when they’re up but can continue drafting after EY picks.

28.10 - Jayson Williams, C, 1990’s

The epitome of the gritty 90’s big man; a big tough ******* that liked to foul.
He only played in the 90’s (1990-1999) because all other decades are BLOUSES.

Once he got meaningful minutes he was a double-double machine. In his All-Star season Williams averaged 13 points, 13.5 rebounds, 50% shooting and 4 fouls (like a real man). Dwayne Wade was a shell of his former self in the 2010’s.
