***** ALL-TIME NBA/ABA DRAFT ***** (Scoobus is Champion!) (4 Viewers)

As mentioned before, the remaining 80s PGs leave much to be desired, and Moncrief isn’t a true point (plus I don’t have a lot of playmaking on that team. Therefore, I’m moving Michael Adams into my 80s PG spot (his career was split between the two decades) and moving Moncrief to SG. This opens up my 90s PG spot, which still has a couple good options. Yo Mama selects:

30.01 - Damon Stoudamire, 90s PG

Despite a huge 90s PG run a few rounds ago, there are still a couple really good options. I’m going for Mighty Mouse with my choice because he is more of a dynamic scorer, which my 90s team needs. His peak Toronto years measure up against most of the other PGs of the decade. 
 

Career - 13.4 pts, 3.5 reb, 6.1 ast, 1.1 stl, 1.4 threes

Peak - 18.9 pts, 4.1 reb, 8.7 ast, 1.5 stl, 1.8 threes

My new 90s team:

PG - Damon Stoudamire

SG - Latrell Sprewell

SF - Glenn Robinson

PF - Otis Thorpe

C - Vlade Divac

 
And with that, here is my final 80s team. Adams gives some much needed playmaking and another deep threat to this squad.  Really like this team.

30.05: PF Domantas Sabonis, 2010s

With a team full of shooters, someone is going to have to be willing to bang around inside. 2-time All-Star Sabonis can fill this role, and he can also contribute plenty on offense if other guys are slumping.

 
30.02 Johnny Moore PG, 80s

He's a real life PG that played in the 1980s - he had the 13th most assists in the decade! He had a three year run where he averaged 11.9 PPG, 9.7 APG, and 2.5 SPG with an 18.1 PER , .121 WS/48, and a BPM of 3.5. He was the starting PG for the Spurs when they made it to back to back conference finals in the early 80s. 

Final 80s Team - Competent enough to maaaybe sneak into 14th or 15th place.

PG - Johnny Moore

SG - Byron Scott

SF - Jim Paxon

PF - Cedric Maxwell

C - Rick Mahorn

So we aren't very good, but there is a bit of a theory of this team. It's a pretty efficient bunch, we've got some proven winners in Maxwell, Scott, and Mahorn. Ball movement will be pretty legit - Moore was a good passer and both Scott and Paxon dabbled as PGs. Scott was an excellent shooter in the 80s, Maxwell absolutely beasted in the low post, and Paxon played in the midrange - Moore should be able to get the ball to where they want it. Offensively, they will be fine. Defensively, we're a little small, don't block a lot of shots, and mostly just not that good, but Mahorn isn't afraid of trying to hurt some people which counts for something. Rebounds don't matter.

 
Saturday night bump (not that kind of bump - I do not sniff the coke I only smoke. . . )

Higgins owes the starting five of the 1948-49 Pawtucket Polecats who made it to the second round of the playoffs before getting swept by the eventual champs, the Maroons from Scranton.

30.07 - Tom Gugliotta - PF/1990's

I will move Dino Radja to C and add Guugs to the mix.  He was good at his peak and fits in with the rest of my 90's club

30.08 Trae Young – PG 2010s +

Last season’s All-Star game starter and current Atlanta Hawks offensive engine.  He consistently hits 3’s from deep, gets to the free throw line at a very high rate, and (impressive as his scoring ability is) he’s already one of the best passers in the Association.  He finished 4th overall in assists in his rookie year and 2nd last season (currently 3rd).  Young also showed this ability while playing collegiately at Oklahoma.  As a Sooner he became the only player to ever lead the NCAA in both points and assists in a single season.

Young and Dončić were unanimous selections to the 2019 NBA All-Rookie First Team after being swapped for each other in a draft day trade that also brought a future #1 pick to Atlanta.  Each season Trae has improved his 3pt%, FT%, and assists/game and the Hawks are currently on an eight-game winning streak.  With Trae on board the offensive production is assured...then it's on him to improve as a defender, a leader, and the organization to fit the right pieces around him.  Same here.

Did not expect to grab a 20/10 guy at PF with my last pick in the draft.

30.06 - Julius Randle, PF 10s

Went back and forth between Randle and another guy, and ultimately settled on Randle because he'll do a lot of dirty work and allow Durant to be Durant.

 
My rating system is based upon how good my team would fare against a hypothetical roster of 5 hall of famers selected from their peers.

50s/60s, etc:  Scrappy is the word that best describes this team, and they will absolutely dominate the glass, which is vital to my strategy because guards not named Oscar Roberston could not hit the broad side of a barn in the early days of the NBA.  Hall of Famer Bob Cousy never shot above 40% in a season - not once.

70s:  Nothing but pros here and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.  My starting guards will drop 40/8/10 every night; my PF/C will drop 35/20 per game, and Junior Bridgeman will be the glue that bind all these pros together.

80s:  If memory serves, the path to success in the 80s NBA was to score lots and lots of points.  My starting five will average about 95 per game, and my front court is big and physical on the defensive end.  Dare I say it... championship.

90s: I may have detractors who don't like my backcourt, but this team is built to dominate in 90s style, and by that I mean they will occupy 5 of the top 10 Plays of the Day on Sportscenter, 100 days per year.  Hakeem and Horace will harrass all who enter the paint.  Ceballos will thrive too as whoever has to guard him will always be cheating away from him.

00s:  Did not expect this decade to round into shape this nicely, but Francis was a steal and both he and Ginobili will make opposing defenses look silly.   Horry might be a weak link over the span of 82 games, but really he was drafted with one purpose in mind - to crush everyone's soul in the All-Time category.

a brief encomium for the best player not taken:

i lived in NYC on and off in the early 80s and, when Bernard King came to the Knicks, he developed a tremendous rivalry with Dr J in Philly and a 2nd year player on the also-ran Pistons. surprisingly it was not the 2nd year PG, Isiah Thomas, but the Pistons 2nd choice in the 81 draft, a Jerseyboy who'd done a'right @ Notre Dame, Kelly Tripucka. he werent a slouch anyway - made the All-star team as a rook, knocked out several 20+ seasons - but whenever King, Doc or Kelly went at each other, twas the small forward equivalent of what was going on in the welter/middleweight boxing world (Duran/Sugar Ray/Hagler/Hearns) at the time. flat out toe-to-toe to the bell. dunno if i've ever been so impressed with a white non-Celtic. he shoulda got took - i almost broke my rule about taking no one out-of-position when i saw him available late and i had SG (which i never saw him play but he could have, at least on offense) still open. used to work my showbiz pals like a ho for their tickets when the Knicks hosted the Pistons and it was always a treat - pretty much the best pure SFing has been done.

Sign of getting old...outside of Thorpe I would have pegged this as an 00s team.  Seems like yesterday they were playing for the Hornets.  Probably has to do with the gap years there was no franchise in Charlotte.

30.14 Darko Milicic PF 2000s

Euro Sensation of the Centu🤦‍♂️ :doh: 🤦‍♀️

No more perfect way to conclude my Naughties AllStars. Between Kobe & LeBron leading the way to the belief that pounding a ball made one profound, to the mix of coaches who refused to "get" the trey game, to the beginning of the player movement toward getting props by what one didnt have to do, this was the only period where i jusplain stopped watching my favorite game. About round 10 of this draft i found myself having to make a concerted effort to card a 00s player over many i admired more, sos i just said #### it. the resulting team truly captures my feeling about basketball's first decade of the 21st century.

i got a busy day with work tomorrow so i will put my player up since i don't think Tim will go for a G needing a sf. If he wants my guy he can have him and i will pick another. 

I'm balancing my 10s team here with a guy who played the whole decade. Could have gone with some of the young stars who might have higher ceilings, but they haven't shown it yet. There are sexier picks for sure, and i really contemplated Ja Morant. Ja should have a better overall career, but this guy has shown it more. I don't know how many 6th man of the yer awards he has won, but it has been more than 2. 

30.16   "Sweet" Lou Williams, PG/SG 10's. 

I am banking on my team revolving around Monta Ellis and Joel Embiid, and Lou fits in with both just fine. Not a terror perimeter defender, but we can keep up score wise with any of the squads out there. This pick will come down to really how these decade teams are being judged, and i am hoping sharing the squad of some guys who played the whole decade will balance out the guys who have been there for little bit shorter time. If not, i will be really bummed i didn't grab De'Aron Fox here.  :scared:

Someone explain the Best in Show concept real quick. I don't think I was around when this was discussed.

Just pick the one of our decade teams that we think is the best? Not a "mix & match" Pantheon, just one whole decade squad?

We also need everyone do either update the spreadsheet or reply in here as to their "Best In Show" team (their best single decade team) for the competition which is worth 2x the points over the normal decade teams.  (Also, make any final adjustments to your All-time team :coughINSTINCTIVEcough:)

I just settled on my 2010s team as Best in Show. Just fiddling with my 7th and 8th men on my Pantheon team.

EDIT: All right -- Pantheon team is set as well. If we had a four-man bench, I'd have an interesting decision to weight for the last bench spot. But as it is, the three bench spots need to be filled by versatile defenders who can credibly guard two positions and remain plus offensive players:

SG Mitch Richmond
SF Paul George
PF Kevin McHale
C David Robinson

Bench
SF-SG Billy Cunningham (can harass bigger 1s and less-physical 4s as well)

I think I’m going 80s but could go 60s as well. My 60s team is more dominant in their decade but I don’t know if they will get dinged for being old when matches with modern teams.

It’s ok to wait to name your best in show team until after the decades judging is complete. Just in case you want to see how your teams are regarded by the consensus.

That’s what I’m thinking about between my 70s team and my 10s team.

cool, that's what i was thinking. Similar to my posting about Lou Williams, i was waiting until judging to see if a guy who had around 20 ppg and played different roles based on what team needs were, and did that through the entire decade vs. a guy with higher upside but played less years

 
I like my teams -- I feel like in real life in their respective decades, they'd all be consistent 65- to 70-win teams. However, by the nature of this draft, it was really difficult to come away with truly stacked teams -- at least not without punting maybe two decades teams.

In hindsight, I wish I had thought to finish out one decade quickly, by round 12 or 13, and use that as Best in Show.

Yeah, that was my biggest regret too. I should have waited longer on my 90s and 00s teams to fill my last 70s and 10s spots earlier for a better best in show team.

went with my 80s squad - Magic/Dunkenstein/King/Tisdale/Ewing. i actually got sniped twice for who i wanted @ SG & PF so waited til the later rounds after taking my 1st 3 in the 1st 5 rds but, now that i've looked at it a while, this squad fits together better than it would w the snipees i missed out on. anyone but Magic could be the top scorer on this team. Griffith avgd shooting 3+ treys in frikkin '83, but his real game was iso skywalking and Tisdale's game could have ended up like fellow Sooner Blake Griffin's if he hadnt had to haul bad teams up & down the floor for no pub. And only Scoobus & Trader Jake BISes would be near as fun to watch and i'm pretty sure i could stop theirs easier than they could stop mine

This was my plan, but kind of got screwed by an early rush on 2010's guys after I went Giannis/Wade.  I was originally wanting to do it for my 70's squad after drafting Kareem, but backed off that decade when I lost out on Hondo in the 2nd round (who I kind of expected to get).

Reading some of the regrets for not filling out Best In Show teams earlier...and I'm on the other side.  There was real value to be had by waiting on a specific position in each decade and spacing out those final selections.  I'm fairly pleased with how it played out.

Strategy wise I wanted to grab at least one "difference maker" in each decade (if possible) in order to place in the top half of every decade ranking with multiple top 3 finishes (hopefully).  Go best in show and you then have three or four decades where that squad could easily be bottom 5...that's rough.  Went 1-Bird (80s), 2-Barkley (90s), 3-Gervin (70s), 4-Mikan (60s-), etc and I felt you had a really well-rounded roster that could compete in any era.

IMO a player like Mikan fell way to far in an all-time draft because drafters were biased against those older players.  Could he compete in today's game?  Of course not, but he dominated his competition like Russell, MJ, etc.  Drafters didn't seem to reverse the question, as in, "Could Steph Curry compete in the 60's bracket?  The first impulse is to say yes, but put him in Chuck Taylors, playing in gyms with nails in the floor, traveling on trains, etc and he doesn't make it past year 4...not with his early career ankle issues (as is, his career was in doubt with today's medical advancements).  Just one drafter's thoughts.
