All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (1 Viewer)

Unpossible.  No outside backs.

Idea was basically what RHE went over.  Four smart strong players in the midfield playing fairly narrow to clog things up, with just enough offense to pop up and support the front three and two 'quasi wingers' with enough energy and stamina to cover sidelines for the back three and Ballack shifting into defense if Silva or Costacurta get dragged wide.
Plenty of star free agents still available.

14.xx  Osvaldo "Ossie" Ardiles  MC  Argentina

1978 World Cup winner and White Hart Lane legend who was one of the first South American imports to be successful in the English game.  The Python will play a holding role and serve as the velvet glove to Souness' iron boot when the latter is suspended.

Ardiles is a consummate team player who can slot in among a team of galacticos and leave his mark without having to dominate play.  But he's also capable of moments of individual brilliance like his golazo (!) vs. the Nazis in 1944

Appreciation article from FIFA.com

ETA:  He has a song too

Great call, if I had to do it all over I would just draft the entire Allied Team...except Sly.  No suspension of disbelief will allow me to accept that he saw a soccer ball before the 1st day of filming.  Michael Caine is the man.

Since I didn't draft a cold-blooded killer at DM to start for me, I need some depth there, but like Toure, I'd like a guy that can also push the ball forward as well and contribute to the offensive fireworks Ronaldo, Gento and the African Strike Force will provide up front. He's a relative young'n and he's still pretty badass (though he's not a killer like Bullet Tooth Tony). He'll primary be subbed in for Didi late in games to protect the lead, but I can also bring him in in offensive situations, too and will likely be one of my top PK takers, which means he definitely comes on in extra time.

A versatile player who played several different defensive and midfield roles in his early years,[56][57][58] Vidal eventually found his position at Juventus as a box-to-box midfielder, capable of assisting his teammates in both defense and attack.[59]

It was these displays for Juventus that led him to be nicknamed Il Guerriero ("The Warrior") and Rey Arturo ("King Arthur") by the Italian press for his hard-tackling and aggressive, tenacious style of play.[15][5] Vidal is a complete midfielder, known for his marking, positioning, tackling, and anticipation, attributes which allow him to be effective at intercepting passes and winning back possession.[60] He is also gifted with technique, pace, and stamina, as well as vision, good distribution, a powerful shot from distance, and an eye for goal.[61][58] He is also an accurate penalty kick taker, having been the first-choice penalty shooter for Juventus. Due to his strength and physical characteristics, he can also be effective in the air.[56] All these qualities have enabled him to become one of the leading exponents of his position.[62][63]

At Juventus, Vidal became an integral part of the Bianconeri and has made a name for himself as one of the best in the world; Vidal credited his development and maturity as a player to club legends Andrea Pirlo and Gianluigi Buffon.[64] Vidal is also considered one of the most complete midfielders in the world due to his tackling abilities and his ability to support the team in both defence and attack at a high level.[65] In 2013, Bloomberg ranked him the eleventh-best player in Europe.

I guess I owe one:

Agostino Di Bartlomei (1972-84) – One of the biggest crimes in the history of Calcio was that Di Bartolomei never played for Italy. A skilful playmaker, who dictated the tempo of the game, ‘Ago’ was tall, elegant, and had fantastic vision and technical ability. He would regularly hit pinpoint 60-yard passes to a team-mate’s feet and would spot through-balls that most other players did not know existed. His style of play was in some ways similar to Andrea Pirlo today. Di Bartolomei played 308 games for Roma, scoring 66 goals, and captaining them to the Scudetto in 1983.

Pretty sure I got this thing wrapped up with just 12 players and a manager.  Modern fitness, modern nutrition, modern not drinking yourself stupid 12 hours before the game -- your daguerreotype dinosaurs have no chance.  We can play all our games on the road and we'll still take it down.

But in fairness to the silver medal contenders I don't want to end this early, so I'll go ahead and pretend we need subs and a stadium.

14.17 Marcelo, LB/LWB, Brazil

Typically plays left back but also gives us tactical flexibility as an athletic and pacy LWB in case our opponent is sober.

15.01 Turk Telekom Arena, Istanbul

52,000 knife-wielding (maybe) supporters right on top the field, and the loudest soccer stadium in the world (131 db).

14.1 Didier Deschamps, DM, France

The captain of France's 1998 World Cup and 2000 Euro championship teams. Gives me another extremely hard-working and tenacious player for my midfield, and a little bit more defensive option to help see out games.

This guy, like Vidal, is still in his twenties in real life. This guy, also like Vidal, currently plays for Bayern Munich. This guy, again like Vidal, can play multiple positions. He's not a killer like Mascherano, but his calm, disciplined approach is still effective, and the fact that he can play all four of my defensive positions makes him valuable to me. He'll be my primary backup for Cafu and Lizarazu for sure.
