Want to mix it up with a Far East Player...

16.4 - Hong Myung-bo - South Korea - Sweeper

Hong Myung-bo (Korean: 홍명보, Hanja: 洪明甫; Korean pronunciation: [hoŋmjʌŋbo]) (born February 12, 1969 in Seoul) is a South Korean former footballer and former manager of the South Korean national team. Hong is often considered one of the greatest Asian footballers of all time. Hong was a member of the South Korean national team in four World Cups, and was the first Asian player to play in four consecutive World Cup final tournaments.

Hong often played as a centre-back but also played at the full-back position. He was often touted to be the best sweeper in Asia at that time. He was often cited as the "Korean Libero" by the media due to his ability to play deep into the midfield and strike a long distance ball. He retired as a player following the end of the 2004 Major League Soccer season, having finished his career with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He was chosen among the "FIFA 100", Pelé's selection of the 125 greatest living footballers in the world. He was the only South Korean footballer in the FIFA 100. He was also the recipient of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Bronze Ball. No other Asian player has yet achieved this feat.

I'll take Darijo Srna - RB - Croatia

Long-time captain for Croatia, plays for Shakhtar, capable of playing anywhere on the right flank.  Has 21 goals in 127 caps for Croatia - which is a better ratio than some of the forwards I have seen drafted.  Also, and more importantly, he has 107 assists in 400+ league games - if called on, he will be able to provide great service for the forwards to pounce on.

Not much time for a write up.  I'll take Sandor Kocsis-- ST -- Hungary.  75 goals in 68 matches for Hungary including 11 in the 54 World Cup.  Noted for scoring headers.  Another option as my second striker.

Is Demetrio Albertini Italy DMF available still?  He should be long gone but I dont see him on the sheet so Ill take him. And FYI, he made his pk ahead of Baggio's huge miss in the World Cup.

"He is widely considered as one of the legends of the A.C. Milan side of the 90s[1] and a fundamental player for the Italian national team of the same period. He spent most of his career with Milan of the Italian Serie A, winning many trophies, including five Serie A titles and two UEFA Champions League titles with the club. He also played his final season for FC Barcelona, winning the Spanish League before retiring that year."

@Sinn Fein

To recap, TOMORROW we go to 1 pick a day.  If you have not made a round 16 pick, you may make 2 picks tomorrow (or however may Floppo needs).
It's tomorrow for me, so I am going to go ahead and pick. I have a sick kid on my hands, and won't be on my computer much.

Ernst Happel, Manager.

Teams Managed: Feyernood, Club Brugge, Sevilla, Hamburger SV, Austria, Netherlands

The Austrian favored an attacking style of play, keeping their opponents under constant pressure. Happel got his team to control the game. He had a great impact in soccer at the European competitions and the International level.

He was the first coach to win the European Cup with different clubs, his first success was with Feyernood in 1970 and later led Hamburger SV of Germany to victory in 1983. Happel also helped Club Brugge of Belgium to the final of the tournament in 1978.
The bolded is key for my player selection, and this is the guy I have wanted all along. He is also well versed in il gioco all’Italiana, catenaccio and totaalvoetball, which I feel will be important to counter considering who we are up against.

Nation : Austria
Major Team : Feyenoord (5 Seasons), Hamburg (6 Seasons), Club Brugge (3 Seasons), Netherlands (A Tournament)
Major Achievement : 2 Times Dutch Champions
3 Times Belgian League
2 Times Bundesliga Champions
2 Times Austrian League
2 Times Dutch Cup
1 Time Belgian Cup
1 Time Austrian Cup
1 Time DFB-Pokal
2 Times European Cup (1970, 1983)
1970 Intercontinental Cup
1978 European Cup Runner-Up
1978 FIFA World Cup Runner-Up
1982 UEFA Cup Runner-Up
Individual Achievement : Hamburg’s Greatest Manager Ever
Style : Attacking

Ernest Happel has long been considered as one of the most prestigious managers in history of the game. He is the first manager to have won the European Cup with 2 different clubs and reached the most prestigious international final match both for club and for National level. He also won the league title in four different countries.
Considering the teams he coached throughout his career, often minnows who blossomed under him, imagine what he can do with a team of stars, who also have a deep understanding of tactics.

With the introduction of Happel to my team, I can now play 4 main formations, all with high pressure up the field, high work rate and fast attractive football.

Standard 4-1-2-3
Modified 4-2-3-1
Unbalanced 4-1-3-2 (just missing one player, who will be drafted on Saturday)
Standard 4-2-1-3

I can vary my attacking options by playing to feet for Puskas, air and counter for Rushie, and I certainly have the players to provide service, both in midfield and on the wings.

At least i know I have two guaranteed group wins against the lady boys, and their antiquated 4-4-2.

Worried about Mourinho at Santiago Bernebeu, and Rajko Mitic can be tough, but it all depends on tactical formations.

Wim Suurbier RB Ned with my 17th pick.

"It may have been Johan Cruyff who was making all the headlines, but Wim Suurbier was a vital part of Holland's "Total Football." His great stamina and pace allowed him to charge down the right flank from the first whistle to the last for both club and country.

He was a part of the great Ajax side of the 70s, helping them to seven league titles, four Dutch Cups, and three consecutive European Cups.

He was to taste heartbreak on an international level, though, as his 60 caps included losing twice in World Cup finals, in 1974 and 1978."

So, should I put together a team for friendies or not?  I've been able to secure a home pitch for my team, the first and only place I've ever seen a game outside of the continental U.S., el Estadio Salto del Caballo, overlooking the mighty Tagus River on the outskirts of historic Toledo, Spain. You can check it out here.

Several players/coaches have approached me about making this happen because they "want a shot at the teams that didn't want them." They got extra fired up when Tasker selected Vinny Jones.

Round 17: Diego Simeone, Defensive Midfielder and Assistant Head Coach - Argentina and Inter/Atletico/Lazio

In the unlikely event we face a team who can wrestle possession from us, we'll need one more defensive dyanmo to control the midfield. Simeone has been called "the great destroyer" by the English press and is one of those players opposing teams hate to face given his relentless intensity and work rate. He is also one of the more astute minds in the game (as his managerial prowess proves) and is underrated in terms of his skill on the ball.

Some cool highlights from his days at Inter

More Facts:

  • Argentina's most capped player ever (106 appearances, 11 goals), Simeone featured in three world cups
  • Joined Atlético in 1994 and won the Spanish domestic double in his second season, his first major club honours to add to two Copa América titles (1991 and 1993).
  • Enjoyed further success after returning to Italy, winning the UEFA Cup with Inter, plus a Serie A and Coppa Italia double in his debut campaign with Lazio (1999/2000). After four years in Rome, he returned to Madrid for a second spell with Atlético before ending his playing career in Argentina with Racing Club.
  •
But more than the club trophies, Simeone is considered a legend because of the way he played the game. For both club and country, Simeone was always the spiritual leader for his teams—basically the Argentine Gennaro Gattuso. His intensity on the pitch set the tone for his teammates, who couldn't be caught giving less than their all under his watch. He was the enforcer who'd pester opposing flair players with little shoves and borderline tackles, to hopefully get them off—or out of—their game. Simeone was adored by teammates and fans alike for his commitment to winning.

Can we forefit a bench spot to have a player manager. This way we are not taking advantage of an additional player

16.17 Carlos Tevez, F, Argentina

8x league winner
Copa winner (MVP)
3x South American footballer of the year
1x PFA team of the year
2x Serie A team of the year
1x Serie A player of the year

Capable of filling in for any of the forward spots, a like for like replacement.

17.01 Kevin Muscat, Retaliator, England

I've long thought that soccer needs NHL-style enforcers to handle things when the refs aren't doing their jobs. Considered Nigel de Jong, but was worried he wasn't quite crazy enough to protect my team of thoroughbreds.  If Muscat gets subbed on, someone's getting stretchered off.

After we get up 12-3 we'll slide de bore over as a third CB, bring on Gio at LB and Vinny next to Tardelli.

Glllll yous guys

Happy with both the LanDon and Gio picks.  Really surprised Gio was still available.  Solid bench players IMO, two well-seasoned international veterans.

Is it blind homerism to say that the US has been involved in more exciting/dramatic matches than any other team in recent WC history?  I don't even mean the games we love the most (3-2 vs Portugal, 2-0 vs Mexico), I mean the number of games with lots of late-match drama and great talking points:

USA -- Germany 2002 (US forces Kahn into multiple brilliant saves, handball on the line, best game US has ever played IMO)
USA -- Italy 2006 (blood and guts tie that finished 10v9)
USA -- Algeria 2010 (extra-time winner)
USA -- Ghana 2014 (late winner)
USA -- Portugal 2014 (US rallies from 1-0 down only to see Portugal tie the game at the last minute)
USA -- Belgium 2014 (Tim Howard stands on his head and US has late chances to tie from 2-0 down in extra time)

That seems like a lot to me.

16.12  Zé Roberto  LB/LMF  Brazil

This pick fills a positional need.  Wing backs are critical in my 5-3-2 and have to put in a lot of running.  Ze Roberto can enter games late at LWB and inject some pace down the flank.  He also can shift to a more forward wing position if we change to 4-4-2.  He also has experience playing in a central holding role if needed.

Ze Roberto was a useful player in the Bundesliga for many years and is still active in the top flight in Brazil at the age of 41

Now there's a name I hadn't heard in awhile.  Great head of hair.
