All Time Soccer/Football Draft and Tourney (1 Viewer)

17.17 Rafael Gordillo, LB/LM, Spain

A hard-working player who can play as a wingback, or give me the option of having a left wing in my formation if needed.

Mark van Bommel

You either love him, or hate him. Mark Van Bommel was certainly a player that was not scared to put in a questionable challenge or do whatever it takes to win, but he could also be classified as a winner. Over the years he put in countless late tackles, elbow checked opponents, grabbed their private parts and he was also famous for time wasting. It was never pretty with Van Bommel but it was often effective, however it was also often reckless, devious and dangerous.

Just in case we run into Gator's boys.

Can I pick a player that's already been selected to be my manager?
We kind of talked about this when Cruyuff was picked in the first round.  I had thought that there was a consensus that the answer was "no," but looking back at the discussion I don't see anything that definitive.

I don't have a strong preference either way.  The only rule I did put down was against player-managers, but at Acer's request, I've changed that rule so that you can do that if you only carry 6 on the bench.

Alright well I'll take Cruyff in that case. (Or Ancelotti if anybody objects.)

17.06  Dave Beasant  GK  Enngland

I need a Wimbledon Legend on my squad and backup keeper seems like the logical place to put one.  Beasant made 340 appearances for the Dons between 1979-88.  He was in goal for their entire rise from the old 4th division to the top tier and the FA Cup.  At age 56, he was still in good enough shape to be named to the subs bench by Stevenage for their 2015 League 2 playoff game.

And of course he made the greatest penalty save in the history of the universe.

Seems strange to pick the same player twice.  One pick, designate as an age prime manager or player.  That's my vote anyway.

17.14 - Patrick Vieira - France - Mid

He rose to prominence during a hugely successful spell at Arsenal from 1996 to 2005, where he eventually became club captain, and won three Premier League titles – one unbeaten – and four FA Cups. He transferred from Arsenal in 2005 and spent one season at Juventus, helping the team to the Serie A championship. Following Juventus' relegation for their part in a match-fixing scandal, Vieira moved to Internazionale and won three Serie A titles, before moving to Manchester City for two seasons, where he retired in 2011 after adding another FA Cup winners' medal to his personal honours.

At international level, Vieira obtained 107 caps for France, and was part of their 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000-winning sides; he was also a member of the French team that finished runners-up in the 2006 World Cup.

Who was next on your list, Pele?

15.17 Vincent Kompany, CB, Belgium

16.1 Rajko Mitic Stadium, aka Marakana, Serbia (Home of Red Star Belgrade and its dangerously insane fans)

I'll write more later.
Thoughts on these two since I didn't get around to it yesterday.

Kompany's had his injury struggles the past few seasons, but he definitely had a run as one of the best defenders in the world and even won the Premier League Player of the Season in 2012. At 6'4 and built like a truck, he gives me a bigger option against teams that have more physical forwards.

There are certainly nicer and bigger stadiums than Rajko Mitic, although it did have a record attendance of 117,000 back in the day before it became an all-seater which now holds 55,000. But it's not about the numbers, it's about the craziness, and this place is tough to match for intimidating atmosphere. Here's a little sample.

17.14 - Juan Sebastián Verón - Argentina - Mid

"The Little #####"

Verón's career started in Estudiantes, continued in Argentina's Boca Juniors, and included stints in several Serie A clubs (where he won the Scudetto with Lazio and with Internazionale, and a UEFA Cup with Parma), and England's Manchester United and Chelsea. In 2006, Verón returned to Estudiantes.

In 2004, he was included in the FIFA 100 centenary list of the 125 greatest living footballers, selected by Pelé as part of FIFA's centenary celebrations. Verón has both Argentine and Italian citizenship. His nickname is La Brujita [la βɾuˈxita] (The Little Witch), a nod to his father Juan Ramón who was known as La Bruja (The Witch) and was also a championship winning player with Estudiantes.

Kind of surprised someone didn't pick him up earlier, but there is a lot of offensive talent still floating around.  He can slot right in for Pele as a late sub or if he gets injured.  He's not Pele obviously but he has a similar skillset and playing style.

Joseph Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan was quite simply THE footballing superstar of the Seventies. He has been described as "arguably the first superstar English player to attract the modern media spotlight".[2] He began his playing career at S####horpe United in 1968, before moving to Liverpool in 1971. At Liverpool, Keegan won three First Division titles, the UEFA Cup twice, the FA Cup and the European Cup. He also gained his first England cap in 1972, and moved to German club Hamburg in the summer of 1977. At Hamburg he was named European Footballer of the Year in 1978 and 1979, won the Bundesliga title in 1978–79, and reached the European Cup final in 1980.

Fast, skillful and courageous, he was a handful for opposition defenders and was widely regarded as one of the finest forwards in the land. Despite standing at just 5ft 8ins tall, he was surprisingly adept in aerial combat.

£500,000 was a record fee for a British footbal!er and Keegan was the most expensive player in the Bundesliga. He soon stamped his authority on the Bundesliga, winning the championship in his second season at Hamburg SV and and won incredibly two consecutive European Footballer of the Year awards, after being the runner-up his last season at Liverpool. In his last season Keegan featured in the European Cup final against Nottingham Forest but lost 1-0. After staying three years in Germany the 29-year-old Keegan was on his way home. Liverpool had first option on him but he moved to Southampton for £420,000. In Keegan's second season at the Dell he was the first division's top-scorer with 26 goals in 41 games and voted Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.

Here's some suggested home work for the games.  Nobody has to do it, but it would help me and you might appreciate the input.

I want the games to "feel" real, so when there's a goal, I'd like to be able to attribute it to a player and even attribute an assist.  And I'd like to be able to keep stats over the course of the tourney.  But I don't just want to assign things on my own.  So what I was thinking is that each team would have (yet another!) table where we map out 20 scoring scenarios. So for my team, maybe the first five scenarios on D20 die might be:

1.  Romario scores on an outside of the boot toe poke after a through ball from Zico

2.  Romario is played through by Luis Figo and chips the keeper

3.  Romario play a 1-2 with Seeler and beats the keeper at the far post.

4.  Zico's shot from 18 yards is spilled by the keeper and Seeler is there to clean up the rebound.

5.  Seeler scores on a rocket from 22 yards.

The goal would be to distribute the possibilities in ways that make sense considering the ways the teams are constructed.  The teams with Koeman or Passarella might have 3 or 4 goal possibilities going to that position whereas I might have none.

EDIT:  It would help if I were more explicit with what I'm asking.  Think about how you'd distribute your goals.  Make a list of 20 if you can.  If not, whatever suggestions would be helpful.  It can be as simple as the distribution between players.  It can be a written scenario.  Or even a link to a YouTube video (Hand of God goal, Messi's slalom, Van Basten's impossible volley).  Send it to me in either a PM or at my email at stevenerobertson@gmail.com.  Again, this isn't mandatory.  If I don't get your suggestions, I'll just do it for you.

I just want one side of the Manos de Dios FC die to have a handball goal/assist.

Also a Vinny Jones breaks __________ in half  side

OK, I'm going to edit the game play tables to give more events, but for your comments, here are the Polling questions that will go on each Game thread and how those polling results would affect a game.  As a reminder, we use an Advantage table, a Neutral table, and a disadvantage table.  Each team rolls 6 times.  The default, before calculating any poll results, would have each team rolling twice on the Advantage table,  three times on the Neutral table, and once on the disadvantage table.  "Saving rolls" will be on a D6.  A value of 5 or 6 will represent a successful saving roll as described below. Remember the threshold for claiming a bonus under any question is 60% of the vote at game time.

Which team would control the game by possessing the ball more and creating more chances?  Replaces one roll on the Neutral table with a roll on the Advantage table.

Which team's defense would better limit their opponent's ability to create scoring chances?  Replaces one opponent's roll on the Advantage table with a roll on the Neutral table.

Which team would be most vulnerable to a counter attack?  The (four?) spaces designated "Counter" on the Advantage table would generate goals against this team when rolled.

Which team has the more clinical finishers?  On any roll that results in a save, missed shot, or offside call, team may make a saving roll, but only one successful saving roll in this category will be allowed per game (i.e., if team has an unsuccessful savings roll it may make another attempt at the next eligible roll, but it cannot if it has already succeeded).

Which team has the goalkeeper who is most likely to stand on his head?   For any roll resulting in a goal, team my make a savings roll, but only one successful saving roll in this category will be allowed per game.

Which team has the better offensive substitutes?  On next roll, team may roll twice and get the better of the two rolls.

Which team has the better defensive substitutes?  On opponents' next roll opponent will roll twice and get the worst of the two rolls.

Is there any question you would remove for this?  I'm running out of poll real estate (I've considered this).  Also, any team that is a man down should only roll on the disadvantage table.
Unlikely, although I think there should be just one sub question.  Subs would come into play naturally with an injury/card as well so maybe it doesn't need a question.

Set pieces are big.  Maybe a who has a set piece advantage?  Size of the team and skill of the taker would come into play here.

Maybe a team harmony/tactics question?  That's a huge factor.

I think it looks great as is, and will be fun. Cards are too much for this imo, although if you play Effenberg against Mattaeus, there will be a fight.

The way I can handle cards is similar to goal distribution.  Have getting a yellow be random, but have the recipient not be.  If I were starting Effenberg, I'd have him take up like 7 of the 20 spaces on my card table.  Of course that greatly increases my chances of going a man down, but I don't really care because I'm here for the narrative.
