Am I easily annoyed or is collinsworth horrible? (1 Viewer)

Am i just grumpy or does this guy make you wanna mute too? He just says dumb things all night starting with " peters just made the greatest block I've seen all year" in week 2. Countless other times i yelled shut up at the screen . Is it just me guys tell me

I use to feel the same way. He has grown on me over the years..

I can't stand to hear Jon Gruden speak, he trys to make everyone sound like HOF'ers

Not a fan of Joe Buck either...

I used to like him a lot more before he got a full time gig calling games. He seemed to be infinitely more knowledgeable than most of the turds that call the games. Now that he's the man, he seems to be regressing to the mean, overhyping players, and overdramatizing things. Still in the upper tier of broadcasters, but that's not much of a compliment.

I don't mind him but I did notice this golden nugget at the end of the game:

"Are we ever going to have a game that doesn't end on the final play?"

My guess is no.

me toodon't know who you all are comparing him too but he's light years ahead of guys like Randy Cross and Dierdorfand I don't think we even have to mention Jim Mora (who may be a worse announcer than he was a coach)I also find him more insightful than Simms and easier to take than Gruden, but I can understand if you prefer one of them to Collinsworth...but horrible? no I can't see that at all

He can break down plays almost instantly at times, even before the replay so I think he's a very good analyst to have in the booth. Sure, he can press at times etc but he's an excellent commentator. He understands the nuances of the game and points things out that most completely miss.

He doesn't like Michael Vick so he was eager to pump up Matt Ryan as soon as possible. It's like Vick being out didn't make a difference in the analysis or the accolades heaped on Ryan. I think if Vick had played out the entire game the Eagles win, but I understand if people want to post a differing opinion.

Was the Atlanta win really that great? They didn't beat the Eagles at 100% strength.

He gets a little too dramatic about a lot of things I find. He's not terrible, but like others have said, he'll go off on a tangent like it was the craziest play he's ever seen.... every few minutes.

Way better then Joe Buck though.... who is by far the worst.

Happens to a lot of broadcasters. When they first get the job, they put extra effort in. After they've been in the business a while, they begin to notice how other broadcasters get by on acting goofy instead of knowledgeable, and the temptation grows to slack off. Eventually, if they give in, they become annoying, and replaced by younger, hungrier prospects that put effort into their work.

He's great at being able to sell what he hears in his ear. He way oversells everything but he's working for McDonalds and his job is to sell hamburgers.

I like Collinsworth. He's smart and makes good points most of the time. The SNF team is WAY better than the MNF team. I like Jaws, but Gruden talks like every player is the greatest ever at their position, and when Tirico gets excited, it sounds fake or forced. He also talks too much and sometimes the game action becomes secondary to his talking point.

In the mid 1980s, Collinsworth was supposed to play for the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits. He didn't for whatever reason but reports were that he didn't want to play for the team. Around that time I was a young teenager and all around idiot, and was playing tennis when Collinsworth was on the court next to me.

So I -- very loudly-- started talking about how awesome the team was and how we didn't need any NFL rejects anyway. No way he didn't hear me. Again, we have a teenage moron bragging about his local USFL team while the talented NFL player he's insulting is right next to him and can hear everything. He didn't say a word in response and just went on with his game.

So what's the point of this story? Once I was old enough to be embarrassed by my behavior, I realized that-- in some small way-- I owe Collinsworth one. For that reason, I will not bash him or the work he does on television. I was glad when he's been promoted in the booth and I hope he continues his successful broadcast career.

If you really hate someone who calls the games, just listen to music while it's on. The folks on this forum know plenty about football, and won't glean much from their commentary anyway.

Go Cris Collinsworth.

I used to really dislike him...still not a big fan but I don't really hate hearing him anymore.

I guess he's growing on me.

Can't stand Joe Buck.

I'd wager there's a lot of pressure on broadcasts by the networks to sell the game and it's players. Not to hype everyone, but to look for opportunities to laud performances.

I personally like both he and Jaws as color commentators. They don't have polished TV personalities but I think that makes them more appealing as analysts. Btw I can't stand Inside the NFL (save for the NFL Films clips). Had enough of Sapp's mugging, insincerity and the preponderance of fluff.

He's nowhere near as bad as Dierdork, but yes, he annoys me too. Mainly because his voice and speaking mannerisms sound whiny and at times, overly negative. But also because he says things that are overly obvious or blatantly wrong. Like others have said though, he certainly isn't the worst color guy out there. Sad but true, that most of the color analysts suck and/or get on my nerves. The only ones I truly like are Jaworski and Aikman. Gruden is ok, but he seems a little out of his element and not quite comfortable in the broadcast booth.

I totally understand why he annoys people, and I liked him a lot less when he was in studio for some reason. He is better than most in the booth, though.

Agree with this. I can understand why his voice or mannerisims might grate on some but as you said he's excellent at quickly breaking down plays and at this point still seems to prefer talking X's and O's after a play over blathering some ridiculous hyperbole about how amazing some player is.

He had a classic Yogi Berraism last night: "Are we ever going to have a game that doesn't end on the last play?"

He has a real smarmy tone of voice that grates on me.
This. His tone and his pencil neck are such a fitting combination. Mute would be perfect, but I like to hear the sound of the game. One day we'll be able to just mute the commentators. That will be a great day.

I'd say it's you. Collinsworth is about as good as you can hope for in commentary. Al Michaels is definitely as good as you can hope for. If you don't like the Sunday Night broadcasting team, you probably aren't going to like any team.

Classic. That is a true Yogi Berraism where you know exactly what he means (that a game isn't decided until the clock is 00:00) but still sounds ridiculous. :thumbup:J

He said he would jump out of the booth if ATL kicked to Desean Jackson. They kicked right to him, in the middle of the field. Another lying Bengals WR?

If you asked me 5 years ago I would have agreed - hated the smarmy tone and hokie'ness.

Now however and over the past two or three years, he has either really improved or I have become more tolerant.

He is one of my favorites because of the good stuff he brings out.

Like everyone in his business...they over hype whoever the "flavor of the day" is, sometimes too much just from one play to the next; but for the most part he is very listenable.

Gruden set the new bar for sound terrorism to me. Anything that isn't him sounds pleasant.

X gruden is the opposite to me. he is as arrogant if not more, but he says really insightful things and points out things that actually matter, and that I often had not noticed or considered about schemes/defenses etc.Collingsworth tries to do this, but is usually wrong, and often not even talking about the right player for e.g.
