Amazon Prime Video "Watch Instantly" Gems: FBG's Recommend (1 Viewer)

I don't know if it's new on Amazon, but the documentary American Experience: New York which is really great is currently streaming on Amazon.  It's a program, that you don't need to binge watch, although you might want to.  You can easily watch an hour or two, and come back to it a week or two later without losing interest.  If you like history or care to know anything about NYC, this program is the most thorough and well produced on NYC.  Created by Ric Burns, it's an 8 episode 17 hour program that covers a span of Henry Hudson discovering what comes to be NY Harbor in 1609 to the attacks in September 2001.  I hesitate to say this is the best documentary that I've ever seen to avoid hyperbole, but the reality is, it's hands down the best documentary series I've ever seen.  It's remarkable to watch, and if you've ever been to the Big Apple, it's that much more intriguing to see how certain aspects of the city have evolved into what it is today and the impact of what it has had on the world.

oh wow... really looking forward to this- thanks for the headsup

That said, I really enjoyed the writing, acting and overall visual approach. And if the lead was actually singing... nice chops.. kind of a Johnny Cash vibe.
The music in Patriot is outstanding. And particularly, they did a great job with his folk songs.

I enjoyed Strike Back and Banshee, two Showtime series on Amazon Prime.
Watched Strike Back and it got a bit silly at times, but is what it is.  Mindless Violence with a bit of Cinemax sex thrown in.  1st season was actually pretty good/realistic.  Next few turned into an R Rated buddy cop action romp.

Just started season 2 of Banshee and like it a bit more. More mindless Violence but the "soap" like plot is keeping me around.

I can't remember and/or never looked... but did the finale play out leaving room for a S2? and is there one on the books?
Ended with:

Luxembourg cop lady getting on a train with the money. CIA guy is going to just let her go (so she doesn't continue with the murder investigation) but then gets a call from his dad that his brother has been kidnapped and they want the money as ransom.

So, yep, definitely left room for a S2. Glad to hear it was renewed. S1 was good.

They released a soundtrack.  I thought the Dorman/Tavner songs were truly excellent. Sadly, the soundtrack does not include my favorite song from the series - when Dorman and O'quinn did a duet of Townes VanZant's "If I Needed You."

Might be a bit late to the party, but Poldark. First show in awhile in that I actually care about the characters. Bonus: strong show to watch with the wife.

I understand the reactions to Patriot are a little all over the place, but 5 episodes in I think the show is awesome. For some reason the dry humor is right up my alley.

Still waiting for the full season of Jean Claude Van Johnson. I need to temper my expectations, but that pilot was too damn good.

FEARLESS

We sat through this six episode series over the weekend.

Really liked it.  Well acted, well written.  The lead character is very good.

Perfect to binge watch on a rainy Saturday when one day is all you have.

Just a heads up a lot of the "Rankin & Bass" Christmas specials (Rudolph) are on on Amazon Prime.

The year without Santa Clause and Jack Frost are on there and I remember them being weird as a kid

The first season of Irish crime saga "Love/Hate" went up last week.  Its stylish modern Dublin setting and some interesting characters make it an enjoyable four hour binge.

For short, 3 minute clips, the Disney couples therapy is worth watching.

Guess it's also on YouTube, a few years old but we just found it.

Finished watching the ScyFy channel Battlestar Galactica remake from last decade. Meh. It started out well, but every season got progressively worse than the last until it seemed like the writers just had some scenes they wanted to shoot regardless of if they made sense when cobbled together, the final three episodes in particular went everywhere and nowhere at the same time. They set themselves up with some opportunities to explore some potentially interesting themes/questions but pretty much bumbled them all. Acting was a mixed bag. Not a must see.

Interesting take, gonna be a lot of people that will disagree with you on that. It was a great, great show that some people hold in the same esteem as Breaking Bad, but it's not perfect (just like Breaking Bad.) There was a huge thread on BSG on this board at some point, no idea if it got pruned or not. Similar to Lost, a lot of people loved the show to a fault and a lot of others loved and still criticized and debated over the flaws. (I don't remember there being as much schtick as there is these days, like in the threads for Walking Dead and GoT for example.)

I do share the same disappointment in regards to how they crafted the story together and resolved it, especially in the final season. IIRC, Ron Moore (head show runner and writer) said in an interview after it aired that he didn't know how to end it so he locked himself in a cabin one weekend and banged out the script for the 3 part finale. Similar situation in that they didn't really have a reason or explanation for what happened with Starbuck's character or who the Final 5 were when they thought up those ideas, they just thought it would be cool to have those events/twists occur. Pretty disappointing for a show that had strung along its audience with an over-arcing sense of a grand plan (which is even referenced in the opening title screens in the early seasons.)

Season 2 is spectacular. More great music, especially from Dorman. At times I laughed so hard I had to back up to catch what I had laughed over. Still no word on a season 3.

If you like Wes Anderson or the Coen Brothers, this should grab you.

For those that have watched Sneaky Pete, wife and I just started watching Prime shows and this was one of those we chose. Enjoyed season one. Yea there were some violent parts but, for the most part, it was about the cons and the game and all that. Just watched episode one of season two and man, it sure seems darker. Basically, the last episode or so of season one and this kick off to season two just seems to have turned in to a "how many people can we slaughter" sort of thing. The show seems much darker to us and the light-heartedness that sort of purveyed season one seems gone. To be honest, I'm not interested in another dark drama. Can anyone tell us what to expect going forward? Does the light-hearted stuff return? Or should we just expect more serious drama, lots of people getting killed, etc.?

Season 2 stays pretty dark. Season 3 lightens up a bit but is still a bit darker than season 1.

it isn't worth a second season, imo. it's like a second-tier USA Network show in terms of what it's doing.

ah... interesting to hear.

I watched the pilot when it was released and thought it was pretty trite across the board, so didn't continue. it's gotten some raves in here, so I was considering giving it a second try when I had time.

i don't have much affection for Ribisi as an actor. i thoroughly enjoy Margo Martindale and Peter Gerety though. it's just not that good, imo, but especially when there are so many other worthwhile shows.

I loved Heaven, and have given him a pass ever since.

But I appreciate the input- I won't bother with it.

List some of them! We are looking for good summer shows to watch. We have like two or three Sneaky Pete's and one Ms. Maisal to go and we've cleaned the slate of the four shows we chose initially.

Off the top of my head, "Homecoming" is really good show. Don't get put off my Julia Roberts as the headliner. It's more Sam Ismail - "Mr Robot" producer - than her project. The other actors, along with the visual storytelling, make it a standout for me. "Forever" with Fred Armisen, Maya Rudolph, and Catherine Keener is fun meta-concept show. "Informer" is a BBC import that does the undercover trope as well as anyone else out there. Plus, it shows life in London in a way that is refreshing.

The Patriot is a good, quirky and funny spy thing/musical.

Eta... Man in the High Castle was imperfect, but a fun watch an an Grand epic way.

Fleabag and catastrophe are both fantastically well written, acted and funny shows about family and relationships.

All original shows on prime

Echo the Fleabag comment.  It was a near perfect 12 episodes.

Not sure I'd say Sneaky Pete is must see, but it's grown on me.

Eagerly awaiting seeing the Panthers on the next season of All Or Nothing which releases on the 19th. Really well done show, and I've preferred it over most seasons of Hard Knocks.

I'm a little intrigued by the upcoming superhero series The Boys, as long as it doesn't devolve into a thin or too-derivative knock-off of The Watchmen.

We finished our final Ms Maisal tonight, so queued up Fleabag as it's replacement. We have about three Sneaky Pete's to go, then we'll chose a drama in it's place. Likely will be Homecoming. Maybe one more. I like to keep three on rotation so they don't get to stale to quick. Really been a horrible summer for TV. Glad we finally have a chance to use Prime.

Just finished Good Omens. Cute. While not super memorable or hitting any heights, it's worth the watch with some good acting, great cast and decent writing.

I liked Goliath with Bolly Bob Thornton (especially season 1)

season 3 is set to release later this year

Looking forward to The Boys https://www.amazon.com/Season-1-Teaser-Trailer/dp/B07QQQHK1Y/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=The+boys&qid=1563267926&s=instant-video&sr=1-1

i agree All Or Nothing is very well done
