American Pickers (1 Viewer)

Is it possible that not everything they buy/sell actually makes it on the air? They don't just keep doing this to NOT make money.

Someone I know incredibly well runs a business somewhat similar to this and is very successful.

Storage Wars is just as fun as AP and PS. Any of these shows that teach me about items, regardless of whether it's staged or not, will keep my attention.

Really like that show--every time I want to flip the channel, they tease you with another "what's in this locker??" on the other side of the commercial and I'm hooked. Good show.

I could see how the 2 guys personalities might turn some people off.
I can't see it. I'd love to hang with those guys.
I agree with you. I was just saying that they may be to 'happy' for those that are generally depressed or gothic, they may not be 'cool' enough for hipsters or vintage motorcycle riders. I think the majority of the population would agree with you and I, but you know... just not evryone. And I really really hate to bring this up again because I don't think it has anything to do with the show... but I think it is a fact, based on some previous posts in this thread, that they come across as life partners to some people. And I'm guessing if that was one of the things you posted about the show... there is a good chance you probably don't like it.

Wow, never thought of them as gay. Doesn't change my view on the show.

Are they gay? I sure don't get that vibe but then again not being gay myself I wouldn't really know what that is I guess. OK, so neither of them are married or have kids...??? I know a bunch of guys that were smart enough to not get married, that doesn't make them gay. I agree with you Jutz, dosn't make me like or dislike the show any more or less, just enjoy the stories and I think the two hosts are fine. Frank gets a little greedy at times but I think the show is a lot of fun.

They have been best friends since they were kids. Mike references going home to a "girlfriend" in Season 1 I believe. I know if I was going to be in a business like this, there is no way I could do it without a partner I trusted 100%, like my BFF.

I don't think they are... I guess if I'm being completely honest I may have gotten a little of that vibe. Enough to understand where others are coming from.Funny you mention the bolded. He does get greedy sometimes. That might be my only gripe about the show too.

If you are married, imagine going into business with your wife in a job where she will be about 5' away from you most of the time, and probably less then 100' away from you the rest of the time. If you are not married, imagine your parents doing that. Is there any question that would not end well?

I'm married, my wife and I work together. She does a business very similar to the American Pickers and I appraise real estate. We spend almost every waking moment together(maybe 23 hours/day?) and have done so for over 10 years. We have a fantastic relationship....but we like each other. If I didn't like my wife I could see an issue, otherwise I don't think it's accurate to say being in business together is dumb. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Also, for what it's worth, both of my parents also appraise real estate, been in business together for 25 years and have a fantastic relationship.

That's awesome you have that type of relationship that works. If I had to spend 23 hours a day with anyone I'd murder myself for lunch.Maybe if my other was better at almost everything I do well and I knew I had to cling to her for success I would be on board for something like this.

Having a committed relationship with someone is already more than enough eggs I need in one basket. The women I choose to run with are almost always much better at spending money than making it. I've went through a lot of women in my life, but not a lot of best friends.
Fair enough. In my case, my wife is my best friend. It works for us.

Her fantasy football team is better than mine every damn year. Other than that we don't do the same things, just do them in the same office. But I appreciate the comment and how it relates to you as a person, regardless if it pertains to anyone else.

From rumors I'm hearing, this show is getting more "staged" with each season. Recently heard about someone who had a barn full of stuff & had contacted the show about getting featured, they were asked to send pictures of all the good stuff and prices would be pre-negotiated before Mike & Frank would come out to film. Makes sense to not waste time filming stuff if there's no deals to be made, but still takes a bit away from the show.

 That is awesome man. I am jealous. I guess my previous post is not true in all cases. Believe me, I am glad there are people out there that can prove me wrong on that. MPTY

Kind of pretty much has to be or they would have a hard time providing enough viewer material to keep people coming back. Nobody wants to watch an hour of people saying "Not for sale" and "Get off my lawn".

Hey, works for us, may not work for everyone. May not work for us forever, but it's going good now. Cheers!

I would actually watch 10 minutes or so of them getting booted or yelled at. That would be good TV.

Did anyone catch the episode where Mike bought the Airstream? When the chick at the store got 2 of her rockabilly friends to help clean the airstream at the end. I gotta admit, I am VERY attracted to the chick and her friends, and the soapy water, and the retro 50's pinup girl style... I was :excited: when I saw that. I love chicks into that style.

Another thing about her. One episode I saw her wearing a t-shirt that said 'Wednesday 13' on it. That guy used to be in a band in NC called the Frankenstein Drag Queens. He was also in a band called the Murderdolls (I think members of Slipnot were in it too). The T-shirt was probably a solo effort by him. I've seen FDQ at shows in NC and SC and I can't help wonder if she knows the guy. She looks like one of the people that would hang at a show like that. It's just that... the guy is not that famous. And I can't imagine the Wednesday 13 shirt is prevalent... anywhere. I'm thinking if you got the shirt... high percentage you know the band.

We should get to work filming "American Door to Door" pretty quick here.

I agree and I find them both grating at times. I watched the "episode" last night where they went to the animal sanctuary and I literally cringed when Shaggy did the "jungle call". :shivers:

I just thought of something that specifically made me question weather mike likes guys. His sunglasses.

A little background... I love Oakley sunglasses. I have 2 pair. 1 pair I did not take care of so the lenses are scratched. I looked at the price of replacement polarized lenses and they are expensive. I considered just replacing them. I always noticed mike had nice shades on. One of the pair he wears is the same model Oakly I have. His are black, mine are brown. I noticed he was wearing some new brown glasses in the most recent episode. I googled 'American Pickers Mike Sunglasses'.

After reading some blogs it turns out he was wearing a female style sunglasses. The Oakley Dart LINK (I think it was these). I started to worry about myself because... after all I liked them. I actually went Oakley's site. Looked at pics. But in the end, I decided there is no way in hell i am going to wear a pair of female sungasses in public, let alone on TV. And that made me wonder about mike.

Now in the privacy of my own home, maybe with a nice dress and a hat, I would wear them... but not in public. err... wait..

Like the show. Id say at first I like PS more than AP, but AP has grown on me while PS has gotten a little stale. PS usually good for more laughs though.

I probably like Storage Wars more than both. Since theyre bidding against other buyers, Im pretty sure the show is less/cant be fixed or premeditated.

Now we have some new show "Storage Hunters" starting on TruTV tonight. How many of these shows are there gonna be?

Anyone catch this? Has to be staged, or else TMZ would be hounding them for details on last night's episode... First, Storage Wars took like a whole season before they found their first dead guy, this show had one in episode two. Second, they opened a unit that belonged to a "survivalist", and it was booby-trapped, something exploded when they opened the door. All sorts of canned food, rifles, and a grenade launcher were inside, but the police & bomb squad seized it all and it couldn't be sold.

But then... the main couple on this show says they do "research", finding out who owns the units before the auction, so they know if he's a collector or a shop owner or just some lady with a ton of cats. The final unit last night was in a Hollywood-area storage complex, and they said it belong to a "former child actor from an 80s sitcom". Break the lock and open the door, and all that's inside is a storage cabinet, a mattress, some empty beer cans, and some crack pipes. Everyone in the bidding crowd starts booing and walking away. Main couple thinks the actor may have been living out of the thing. No one really wants to bid, but the guy wants a peek at what's in the cabinet. So he gets the thing for $10.

Then he goes to open it up, and one of those latex "love dolls" falls out almost on top of him. "These things go for a few thousand dollars new. I have no idea what a used one sells for." But, behind the doll... all sorts of Nazi uniforms and memorabilia. Crazy. Most of it was reproduction but there was a genuine U-boat captain's hat that was apparently worth something. But that whole story just can't be real.

Another thing that Frank did that not the manliest... he had just made a deal to buy some stuff from a former editor of EasyRider. This editor is a pretty stocky, biker, manly man. Frank agrees to a price, and you always shake hands after.

I'll admit, Frank was holding the item he bought in his right hand... but he gave the guy the dead fish shake with his left hand. He sort of held his left hand out, somewhat like an old timey woman would, to have it kissed. The biker guy didn't know what to do. He grabbed Frank's left hand with his right hand, and felt the dead fish. It just seemed so feminine, and sort of disrespectful. Isn't it considered disrespectful to offer your left hand for a shake in some cultures?

The only show more boring than this show is the storage wars show, and I don't believe for a second that it's not scripted or completely set up ahead of time.

Now we have some new show "Storage Hunters" starting on TruTV tonight. How many of these shows are there gonna be?
Is anyone watching this? It's god-awful yet hilarious at the same time. It's worse than Storage Wars... there are only two consistent bidders instead of the strange mix of characters on Storage Wars: a bland husband-and-wife team and a young dopey kid. Yet they air the craziest stuff. Couple weeks ago I mentioned the "former child star's" storage unit with a crack pipe, Nazi costumes and inflatable sex dolls. Last night? First storage unit they open is a meth lab. Folding table with beakers, tubes, empty containers of industrial chemicals, etc. Couple of newbies started bidding on it... no idea why. But they got scared off quickly by a tall, skinny, chain-smoking tattooed guy who wouldn't allow his face to be shown, so it was blurred out. He ended up having to pay $175 for it. At one point the auctioneer started asking why he was being so aggressive... "You trying to buy your stuff back?" Tall skinny guy: " :censored: ". He wins, auctioneer says "Wanna go through it and see what you won?" "No, it's taken care of," padlocks it and runs out of there :lmao:Last unit was a gun-dealer's storage unit. Husband-and-wife team do some kind of research to find the owner's occupation before bidding, so they figured good stuff was inside. After they bought it they found most of the gun cases were empty, but then the wife found a bunch of revolvers and pistols in a crate. Husband pulls them out and puts them aside, totaling up the value. Then he says "I'm gonna take a look at what's back here" and moves to the rear of the unit. Wife just starts randomly picking up the guns and checking them out... BANG! She fires a shot right into the rear of the unit, just misses her husband and it ricochets off the back wall and shatters some stuff in the corner. Wife: "Oh!" Husband: "What the ####?" :lmao:

:lmao:I only watched parts of it and wanted to punch the kid in his face. Guess I'm going to have to DVR it now.

Looked this up on YouTube after reading this. No way was that one genuine.

I'm sure it's just like Operation Repo. They re-enact crazy stories that they dig up and then pretend they are happening to their actors in real time. Haven't seen the show, but I know that's how Operation Repo works.

Yet Operation Repo is still pretty damn entertaining. I only caught a few episodes in a row of it someday, on who knows what channel, but a takeoff on it Repo Games where they ask stupid mother ####ers to get 3 of 5 common knowledge questions right was downright hilarious (except when they lose are you think, how the hell is this guy that dumb).

Kind of pretty much has to be or they would have a hard time providing enough viewer material to keep people coming back. Nobody wants to watch an hour of people saying "Not for sale" and "Get off my lawn".
I would actually watch 10 minutes or so of them getting booted or yelled at. That would be good TV.
This would be cool. Even in that Repo show, they get shot atr or their ###es kicked every once in a while. Makes for good TV while having a beverage...... :)

Tonight's episode was incredible. This guy (Mike and Frank picked his property) lived a life you only dream about.
