I have no sympathy for KKK members but it would really suck for someone who somehow ends up on whatever list they are hacking and is outed as being a member when really they are not. I assume this will also be the angle many who are outed take to exlain why they are on whatever list. How would you really be able to tell the difference? Unless Anonymous hacked into some actual membership list- such as dues record keeping or something along those lines.

Yeah, shouldn't they have to show their work? Especially with regards to the openly gay mayor of Lexington. Always thought the KKK looked own on homosexuality, but maybe it's a new era.

But, my 3 YO daughter, who is seemingly very shy at school, walked up to her teachers last week and said to them: "Guess what"? And they smiled at my little cherub faced, shy princess and said back to her "What, Hazel?". They both about fell out of their chairs when she said "CHICKEN BUTT" back to them. They asked her where she got that and thankfully, she said "Cooper" and not "Dad".

Although she is convinced that pulling a finger will result in a fart. :oldunsure:

I wouldn't bet on that. They are having a bit of a resurgence. Pretty easy to convince some people that the other is to be feared and is holding you down. I wouldn't be surprised by a relatively young, undereducated, group from the low end of the wage scale.

 
This should be interesting. Would be awesome if they can prove there are elected officials in the KKK.

 
I know zip to nothing about this story but from the posts, especially the gay Democratic mayor of Lexington KY (college town), I'm guess what these dark web posse cowboys have stumbled upon is a mailing list, not a membership list, and these can include a variety of names and addresses pulled or gathered over time. These lists are also often sold for political campaigns.

Yeah, I really do think they need to backup their work here. You can't really go around outing public figures unless you have some good, otherwise, credibility will be lost. Course, not sure how you ruin the credibility of an organization that has no identity. Didn't Anonymous screw something else up?

I wrote out a ten-page response to this, but then I deleted it because it's just not worth it. If you really think Kit Kats are that tasty, probably nothing anyone says here is going to change your mind.

 
GM it was the Ferguson shooting where Anon outed the wrong cop.

I'll add these klan nutjobs probably make their real members sign their name in blood in the back of a Bible once owned by Nathan Forrest, or some such hokum.

Probably the worst cases of mistaken doxing came in 2013, in the aftermath of the Boston Bombings. Internet vigilantes on Reddit and 4chan began searching for clues, and identified two “suspects.” Predictably, the pair the Web-sleuths named had nothing to do with the horrific terrorist attack, with one—a 17-year-old boy—telling ABC News that being named as a terrorist was “the worst feeling I can possibly feel.”

The story of the second “suspect” wrongly identified by the mob is far more tragic. Sunil Tripathi, a student at Brown University, suffered from bouts of severe depression and had been reported missing prior to the bombing. Already worried for their son’s safety, Tripathi’s family was suddenly subjected to erroneous claims that he might be a terrorist. “A tremendous and painful amount of attention has been cast on our beloved Sunil Tripathi in the past twelve hours,” read a statement on Facebook.


Reddit eventually took the unprecedented step of issuing a formal apology for helping fuel “online witch hunts,” but it was likely of little consolation to the injured parties. Tripathi’s body was later found in a river.

Later in 2013, socially conscious vigilantes tried to hunt down Andrew Moskowitz, a proud racist and apparently a hiring manager at a renovated cotton mill in Georgia. Outraged Twitter users publicly named his place of work—only to find out that the company had never even heard of Moskowitz. Realizing their “mistake,” they then targeted the other renovated cotton mill in Monroe, Georgia—and were told by a baffled owner that Moskowitz had no connection to them either.

Doxers don’t always get it wrong—and it’s difficult to feel too sorry for many of their targets. But when they do, it can have devastating consequences for those concerned: Accused of horrendous crimes, their names become permanently linked to terrible events. And given Anonymous’ amorphous, decentralized nature, there’s no realistic way to stop it happening.

Doxing “arises partly from the perception that there are powerful thumbs on the scales of justice,” associated professor of philosophy Shannon Vallor told the Washington Post, which prompts disillusioned Internet users to take “justice” into their own hands.

“You can try to stop it from happening by technical or legal means, but the most effective prevention is probably to keep your thumb off the scale.”

Boston wasn't anonymous and niether was the list published in this thread. That list came from a hacker not affiliated with Anon. All Anon has released are some phone numbers and email addresses, no names or other details.

 
How do you prove identities? I can be Hillary Clinton on the web and join all kinds of terrible groups.

The timing is little fishy too seeing as tomorrow is election day. I wouldn't put it past someone creating fake membership lists/data and then "leaking" it. Hard to believe the KKK would allow a gay man or a red man in their secret club. Equally hard to believe those guys would want to join said club.

 
Doxing is a terrible thing to chortle with glee over. It's Ashley Madison and KKK today. It could be anyone tomorrow

Anon is smarter than that. They said they've been watching the Klan for a long, long time. I don't see a guesstimate here. They won't risk their collective reputation. I believe it will be solid, irrefutable, and most likely, glorious.
