Update: I have been back on full time, and the Outlook is good.  Ever since the election the Quez train has been moving a light speed.  I am billing 30 hr's a week to a 5 mil job that we have a contract for another 5-6 years.  I should be good for a while.  Plus, I have learned many more skills applicable to GIS.  Doing a bunch of online mapping, mobile application development, and being exposed to different disciplines.  Heavy on utilities, and transportation.  Re-upped on certifications as well.

I'm currently at 175 and benching 225 10x.  In the best shape of my life.  Getting a ton of work done around the house / yard.  Had a successful soccer season up until not being invited to coach next season, but that's a long story for another thread.  The kid is 5.  I'm getting old.  I wanted to have another one but my wife has chronic headaches, so that's not happening.

backstory- I have 10 years of experience in the "growing field" of GIS. It's kind of like CAD, and was an up & coming field when I graduated from FSU in 2005.  I had a job right out of school, and worked at a planning / engineering firm for 3 years.  Laid off in March 2008, but luckily found a job a week later working for a small planning firm that specialized with eminent domain.  Worked there for almost 1 year, until March 2009.  Then I began a long stretch of unemployment until September 2010, when I landed a job at an engineering firm in Lakeland.  Laid off in July 2012, but did some part time work for the rest of the year.  Jan. 2013 landed my most recent position for an engineering firm, but my office is primarily environmental.

As far as my personal life, married w/ 4yo. Wife has a good job, so we aren't going to be on the streets in a week, but it's not like we can afford for me to not work either.  Own a house $1600 a mo. mortgage, cars paid off, no student loans and no major debt.  They gave me a 3 week severance, and I have a few weeks of vacation I will get paid out on.

I saw this one coming from a mile away.  Work slowed down in October, the holidays were really slow, and it never quite picked up.  They cut me back to 32 hours a month ago, and laid me back to a "bill time only" employee last Tuesday.  I'm pretty sure they won't be calling me anytime soon.  They likely completely part ways with me at the end of the month, but at least I have insurance still.  My office was doing quite a bit of pipeline work for oil and gas, so the slow down with that has been the primary reason.  If a republican takes office I would imagine they get busy again.

There aren't a ton of prospects out there, and way too many applicants.  The current job I had I beat out 13 applicants, some more qualified than me.  That job is gone, my last job doesn't exist, neither does the one before that.  My first job had a department of 6 people, and now they don't even have an GIS guy in the office.  The software has become much easier to use, and much cheaper.  Instead of employing people with specific GIS skills companies are choosing to get by with engineers, environmentalist, etc doing there own GIS work.  My latest fear is the outsourcing of jobs.  My company sent out an email in November saying they want to move all IT jobs, drafting, and modeling jobs to "Value Centers" in Malaysia & India.

I have a few applications out there, but I'm actually considering a career change. I'm 33, and now would be the time to do it.  The problem is I have no idea what to do.  A 4 year degree is practically worthless.  I don't really want to go back to school, and I don't even know what I would go back for anyways. I have thought about insurance sales.  You only need to pass a test for that.  I am also considering learning a trade.  I have a relative with an electrical company I could probably go work for.  I have a decent amount of experience doing construction, so I kind of know what I am doing.  It seems crazy though to abandon a career path that requires a college degree to learn a trade.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

It had to do with my wife having a sign up sheet for people who wanted car decals made.  She fronted the money, and one parent said they didn't want it.  Mrs. Quez went all gheto on her, and since it was a church league they didn't appreciate it.

Hold up....There was a sign up sheet for decals for people who wanted one. A person did NOT want one.  And your wife objected?  Is this schtick?  I feel like I'm reading an episode of Judge Judy here.

I coach baseball and soccer and we collect money for trophies, pizza parties, etc. sometimes not everyone pays. We do our best with friendly reminders but if someone doesn't chip in we eat it, and that kid is not on our team the next season.

Dont need to go ape #### over $10.

So assuming that we're talking about less than $20, my way of dealing with someone owing me that amount of money is to completely forget about it with the exception that in the future that person pays before I order them anything.  

 
My guess is Mrs Quez made these god awful decals at nobody's request she then tried to upsell everyone on the team on for $20 that cost $5 to make since her husband can't keep a steady job. Probably badgered most parents to awkwardly make them buy them. Finally one parent is like f this I'm not buying a decal from some alt right nut that wears a MAGA hat to every soccer game for my kindergartner. Politely says no, Mrs Quez gives attitude, lady rolls her eyes and then Mrs Quez goes bonkers.

Prior to today, I've never even heard of car decals for youth soccer and I've coached nearly 20 seasons of soccer since 2009.  I feel like my players have been deprived.

I just figured everyone wanted one, and then they showed up saying "Make Soccer Great Again!" or "Building a Trump Wall Against Penalty Kicks!" and one parent wasn't a dork and refused.

I have an old friend that got a Philosophy degree.  Smartest guy ever.  He had a hard time getting a job, so he applied for OCS and is doing well now.

No, I was just kidding about the state of hiring these days. Not very good even for the worthwhile ones (watched a lot of really smart friends put in 70+ hours of work at school and get their offers revoked back in '08). Whole thing is changing for grads. Blogs like Instapundit and Above The Law cover stuff like that.

Nearly might give him two per year, (2009-2017 = 18 seasons) though your comment was funny. Here they run two seasons per year. Spring and Fall, just like always.
