Another Ice Bowl in Green Bay on Sunday (1 Viewer)

Wow, sarcasm is lost on some of you. With information at your fingertips, lack of research from some of you is befuddling.

1) Make a confusing post on something that's been discussed as changing

2) Have people read your post and possibly misinterpret it

3) Blame those people for taking what you say with any seriousness and not researching it themselves

Yeah, had nothing to do with the lack of clarity in your post...

To be honest, when I first read your post, it didn't come off as sarcastic or funny, which is what you intended it to be. Perhaps I read it a bit fast, but even re-reading it I don't see much of either.

Some interesting tidbits here.

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Emptying out the notebook from the week that was with the Green Bay Packers heading into Sunday’s NFC wild-card playoff game against the San Francisco 49ersat Lambeau Field:

Cold-weather QB: Sunday’s game may challenge the Ice Bowl for the coldest game ever played in Green Bay, but history suggests the weather won’t bother Packers quarterbackAaron Rodgers. Since he took over as a starter in 2008, he is 12-4 in freezing temperatures (32 degrees or below) and has the highest total QBR (73.7) out of any player who has made at least three starts in such conditions over the that time period.

Run by design: The Packers shut down the 49ers rushing attack in their Week 1 meeting at Candlestick Park, but don’t expect coach Jim Harbaugh to shy away from the run just because his team managed only 90 yards on 34 attempts in the opener. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the 49ers ran designed runs on 46.8 percent of their plays this season, the highest total in the NFL. What’s more, the 49ers use a wide variety of running plays and formations, including the read-option. “Against this team, you have to let your instincts take over because they give you a lot of different stuff,” Packers defensive line coach Mike Trgovac said. “They’re a power team, they’re an option team, they run misdirections.” At times, the 49ers bring in one or two extra offensive linemen.

No line dancing: The Packers go into the playoffs with the same five starting offensive linemen they opened the season with in San Francisco. Of the five, only right tackle Don Barclay missed any starts this season. He missed the Weeks 11-12 games against the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles because of a knee injury. “Any time you have five guys playing together, you don’t have to call out every call and you just know what the other guy’s doing and you build that cohesiveness with each other, it certainly helps to do that,” offensive line coach James Campen said.

Punt return possibilities: As productive as rookie Micah Hyde has been as a punt returner (he finished the regular season 5th in the NFL with a 12.3-yard average), it’s worth wondering if the Packers will go back to Randall Cobb in that role now that he has returned from his Oct. 13 fractured tibia. Cobb has two career punt returns for touchdowns. Last year’s playoff loss to the 49ers turned on a muffed punt return by Jeremy Ross. Hyde’s ball security had been perfect until he muffed a punt that the Packers recovered last Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Final numbers: Despite not having Rodgers at quarterback for seven-plus games because of his collarbone injury, the Packers finished third in the NFL in total yards per game (400.3), seventh in rushing yards (133.5) and sixth in passing yards (266.8). Last season, the Packers were 13th, 20th and ninth in those respective categories. On defense, they finished 25th in yards allowed per game (372.3), 25th in rushing yards allowed (125.0) and 24th in passing yards allowed (247.3). Last season, they were 11th, 17th and 11th, respectively.

Wild, wild-card games: The matchup of the Packers (8-7-1) and the 49ers (12-4) is the fifth time in wild-card history that one team has had at least four fewer regular-season wins than its opponent. It may come as a surprise that in the previous four games, the team with the fewer regular-season wins has won every time. It last happened in 2011, when the Denver Broncos (8-8) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4).

Home-field history: The Packers were once unbeatable in home playoff games. From 1939-2001, they were 13-0, the longest postseason home winning streak in NFL history. Since then, they have gone 3-4 in home playoff games (including 2-2 under current coach Mike McCarthy).

Getty ImagesThe Ice Bowl won’t have a sequel, after all.

Our friends at Weather.com continue to adjust the Sunday forecast for Green Bay to reflect higher temperatures at game time. Currently, the mercury is expected to be in the range of five degrees at kickoff.

While hardly swimsuit weather, it’s roughly 10 degrees warmer than the forecast reflected just a couple of days ago.

A wind chill warning remains in effect as of 6:00 p.m. CT, at which time the game will likely still be in the third quarter.

The best news for the NFL, the teams, and anyone else attending the game is that conditions matching the original Ice Bowl were missed by only one day. If the game were kicking off at 3:40 p.m. CT on Monday, the temperature would be (based on current forecasts) 13 below — the same temperature from that 1967 NFL championship game between the Cowboys and Packers.

Regardless, it’ll still be cold. So cold that fans will receive free hand warmers and free coffee and hot chocolate at Sunday’s game.
That's pretty cool.

Good to see some discussion of the actual game.

I find this interesting, any thoughts on whether the passing style just doesn't work as well in the winter conditions?

Green Bay got to their Super Bowl on the road - maybe they should be building this team for January. Maybe they have with Lacy.

5 degrees has been pretty routine so far this winter. Packers might have a slight edge now (at -10...neither team had an edge IMO).

Tackling Lacy on a day like today will not be fun!!

That's cooler than cool, it just damned cold. It's a good idea, don't want anyone getting hurt out there and it's also an awesome way to thank fans for coming out.

I'm going to make it up there for a game one day.

Question - do the folks that own stock in the team automatically get season tickets or do they have some advantage in getting tickets in some way?

Yep...Ted Thompson had built a "finesse" team (imagine that). But with Lacy in the fold, they may actually resemble a cold weather football team.

Nope...the stock is just a worthless piece of paper. No advantage being an "owner" of the team...other than getting invited to a mid summer stockholders meeting.

Any wetness on the field? At this temperature I'm just wondering - can the o-linemen actually get traction? I'm guessing it's not so icy or sloppy they can't dig in, right?

I'm guessing the field is well taken care of, just interested in terms of watching the game.

I know the game will be much better on TV. I agree with it, even.

But it's going to be great to go to this game.

The ratings will be the best of the weekend. More people will tune in because of the weather. That makes it more of an event, and this weather won't be a surprise to anyone, so people will be prepared. The fans will be plenty comfortable for this game.

I attended the Snow Bowl, and would have never switched seats with someone on a couch that day.

Thanks for the heads up. You have to forgive us common unintellectual folk for not recognizing the brilliance of your sarcasm.
No problem. My post was also a continuation from yesterday when a poster made comments about how the east coast didn't get much of the storm and therefore the weather was being overblown. Mocking the unintellectual is easy and fun. Thanks for the appreciation.

Field should be in good shape for this time of year. Field has a series of underground coils that they can heat the soil so it shouldn't be rock hard. Just hard to grow grass this time of year ;-) so there'll be some wear in the middle of the field.

I was at the Giants game that year (Snow Bowl = Seattle) and the game was dreadful. Granted, I could have been better prepared. I had three pairs of warm socks on, three pairs of pants, six shirts/coats, and three hats. Still freezing. The 2nd half was the worst.

I can tell you though, the free hot chocolate and coffee is not all that great. Why? People will be pissing left and right and although the bathrooms are heated now, going back and forth is not good for the body. I bought a hot chocolate at half time and you need to down the thing or else it will be cold chocolate rather quickly. Plus, the 2nd half was more cold because I spent half time in the bathroom warming up and once my body cooled down again... worse than before.

Fans will be comfortable. Not sure about plenty comfortable though. lol. Lambeau Field is generally a little warmer for the fans though than outside the stadium. All those layers of clothing packed together and body heat. I was also at the Snow Bowl and the NFC Championship game against the Giants. No comparison between a snow game and a cold game.

Kind of curious about another thing - have the new NFL rules on patdowns made it impossible to sneak in the odd flask? Or has that never been interrupted?

The field will be a mess. it looked like crao late this season. worst ive seen it look in a while.

Apparently they left it uncovered for the last couple of days. probably to keep moisture at a minimum...which had been an issue with refreezing.

It is going to be awful weather. Hope that folks are prepared for this as 10 minutes of exposed skin in - 45 is going to bring frost bite.

I thought I heard Fleet Farm is providing the hand warmers. I guess it doesn't matter who is supplying them, it's a good idea either way.

Fleet Farm is providing the hand warmers as fans enter the stadium. Packers are providing the hot chocolate.

Current temp is 6 degrees.

Doh, I did think it was tonight. In fact the GB/SF game and the Philly/NO games are the most interesting IMO, just switched them for tonight!

Revised - looks like the temp will dip below 0 around kickoff. Again, the same premise stands -- it's still really, really cold, but it's not -20. Some of the hyperbole in several articles -- e.g. about a beer freezing in less than 30 min, about getting frost bite on any exposed skin in more than 15 min -- well those things are probably slightly exaggerated. Such goes the world of meteorology. The OP in this thread was written more than 48 hours out, there's just not as much accuracy as we think. NYC was supposed to get a foot of snow on Friday, it got maybe a few inches. We'll see how cold it actually is at kickoff. Forecast - it will be cold. -20? Probably not.
Not sure id say its overdone. Supposed to be in the negative single digits with a 15-20 mph wind making it feel -25. Don't care where you're from that's intensely cold.
Well, check the OP. It was supposed to be -20F. THen it was supposed to be negative single digits. Now it should be positive single digits. Such are the risks of projecting a single temperature more than 48 hours out. Meteorology is inherently unreliable.

And, what city are you posting your "evidence" from?
I posted no evidence, only anecdote.

My weather guy was wrong once in the past. Therefore, it won't be too bad in Green Bay on Sunday.
In fact, this is mostly correct. It will not be as cold as predicted 48 hours ago, and it will not be as cold as predicted 24 hours ago.

Posted 8 hours ago – National Weather Service

Dangerously cold conditions expected early next week.

A bitterly cold Arctic air mass that originated near the north pole in late December is expected to surge into our area this weekend, and remain across the area early next week. The air mass is expected to be the coldest that has affected the area in years. Bitterly cold temperatures combined with winds up to 25 mph at times will result in dangerously cold conditions.

Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect from Midnight Tonight to 6 pm CST Sunday.
Wind Chill Warning remains in effect from 6 pm Sunday to noon CST Tuesday.

  • Bitterly cold air will surge into the area starting this evening. The combination of cold and wind will drive wind chill indices into the 20 below to 35 below zero range tonight and Sunday. Wind chills in this range indicate that Frostbite to exposed skin can occur in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • The core of the cold air will be across the area Sunday night through Tuesday morning. Wind Chill Indices as low as 50 below to 55 below zero are expected at times during this period. Wind chills this low indicate that Frostbite to exposed skin can occur in under 10 minutes.
  • The wind chill Index is a measure of the heat loss to a human body due to the combination of cold air and wind. The colder the air and the stronger The wind, the lower the wind chill Index, and the faster that heat is transported away from exposed skin. Therefore, the lower the wind chill Index, the more quickly that Frostbite and hypothermia can develop.
Temp doesn't matter. 20 degrees, 0 degrees, -20 degrees......it is all the same. Or so I've been told.
Also, those guys are wrong all the time. I'm not holding my breath for this storm. My research tells me it will be sunny and 30F.
Slightly off, but that's the idea!

It is going to be awful weather. Hope that folks are prepared for this as 10 minutes of exposed skin in - 45 is going to bring frost bite.
Hyperbole much?

Weather forecasts are inherently unreliable, but if they are going to be unreliable, they might as well do so in the direction of the extreme. It's going to be really cold? How about "Historic Cold Blasts the Nation!" It might be below zero? How about "Frost bite in 10 minutes with temps 20 below!" Weather, just like "news," is now a form of entertainment media. And to sensationalize any story is going to draw more clicks, more eyeballs, and more views. So it's easy enough to understand that there's a systematic bias in the reporting. Therefore, the reality will likely be less than the extreme predicted in the majority of cases.

This will be fun to watch with my coffee, indoors, before going to work.

Kinda sad though, like watching those commercials with the abused pets with no homes, and the starving kids out in third world countries. I anticipate the same look in the players' eyes.

LOL - http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/graph/Green+Bay+WI+54302:4:USIts going to be cold. Dangerously cold for people to be out and about. To say otherwise looking at weather.com is laughable.

Are you famiilar with this type of weather?
The temp will be above zero the whole game. It really doesn't sound that bad now.
Winds are dramatically higher than expected tho. If it's 18 mph winds, it's gonna really suck.

Heated field, heated seats on the sidelines, and large heaters blowing hot air on the sidelines. Believe me, I've been there, it's not that bad. It's the fans that suffer.

It's not that bad? Those things help. It is still going to be pretty bad, even for the guys on the field every snap who are moving around.

I'm going to make it up there for a game one day.

Question - do the folks that own stock in the team automatically get season tickets or do they have some advantage in getting tickets in some way?
People who "own stock" in the team get absolutely nothing in return other than a piece of paper saying they gave the Packers their money. They don't actually "Own" anything.

It's sad, really.

LOL - I'm probably the last guy that will bite on media "hyperbole" but in some cases, there is a semblence of truth to the warnings. As media spins the story to capture ratings and drive potential memes there are realities to the weather. Superstorm Sandy sure had its "hyperbole" but in the end it was the tragic impact that was projected and the financial and emotional devastation is still being felt.

Weather forecasts can be unreliable because the weather is a major force with wild and unpredictable behavior. I just opened my door in the Chicago area and the wind is now gusting at 15-20 MPH (might just be "hyperbole" because I really do not have a weather vane or any other sort of device to accurately measure wind force) but the 8 inches of wet snow on my drive way this morning has now been blown into a powdery drift some 40 yards around the corner of my infrastructure. We were informed by the "media" that the tail end of 20 hours of snow was going to be high winds and then arctic freeze. I just put my head out the door and it is ball freezing cold and I am sure that it is worse off in Wisconsin. It would be a worthwhile experiment to have you go out in this type of weather with no hat and no gloves for ten minutes to give us a true estimate of the impact of such weather on the human body. In my book, I will continue to run the heat, fireplace and space heaters and stay inside. Getting left stranded in a ditch this evening based on ignoring the weather is foolish. I have seen the 4 wheel drive cowboys blast their horns for the slow pokes to get out of their way only to see them in a ditch popped into a tree a few minutes later. Snow, arctic wind, black ice and sub zero temps are nothing to play with "hyperbole" or not.

"Whaddya think the temperature is out here?"

"One."
haha, missed that. Planes Trains and Automobiles. Nice.

I think being out in near zero degree weather would be halfway tolerable for a game, to the point where you dont wanna just run into the locker room screaming every 10 minutes. Lot of wind at the same time? Ouch

My favorite Packer game day twitter follow just reported the first Lambeau ejection, approx 75 minutes before kickoff.

@PGDougSchneider: Ejection! #scannersquawk 34-yr-old. Section 342. Hope you enjoyed the ... Uh.

That's cooler than cool, it just damned cold. It's a good idea, don't want anyone getting hurt out there and it's also an awesome way to thank fans for coming out.

Still easy to get the flask in. I use the sleeve, so the guy operating the wand assumes it's my watch and lets it go, every time.

Kickoff temp for the Atlanta game a few weeks ago was 9, so maybe not much different today depending on the wind. Despite all the hype, weather may be a non-issue today.

The type of air they are talking about is different. You can't just go by a number and go with it.

Huh. I live just outside Chicago, and 15 min ago got done shoveling snow for over an hour. It was really nice outside, wearing a basic winter coat, hats, gloves and winter boots. It definitely wasn't ball freezing cold. It will be tomorrow though.
