Another killing at the hands of the Police (6 Viewers)

The surveillance video of Taylor is really bizarre. More than once he tries to pull on the broken windshield with his bare hands (the first time it appears he cuts his hand). He then appears to slide into the car through the broken windshield. What exactly is he trying to accomplish? Unless you are under the influence of something, I don't think trying to steal a car by bashing in the windshield with your bare hands is the best way to do so.

The kid got exactly what he wanted - to be killed by cops so he could be a martyr for the cause.
How do you know what the young man wanted?
You gotta better explanation? He tweeted "I don't wanna die too younggggg" after the Michael Nrown shooting, and then in December tweeted "Police taking black lives as easy as flippin a coin, with no consequences smh". And then he goes to a car dealership and starts vandalizing and jumping on cars in what looks to be an attempt to elicit a police response. Then he crashes his car into the dealership. When the cops show up, he disobeys their commands and resists. Sounds to me like a kid who wanted to be a martyr for the cause.
I'd like to hear more about this particular insight. When did he tweet this, exactly? Right after the Brown shooting or like a couple weeks/months after? What do you think it meant in the context of his plan to get killed in a car dealership many months later? Do you think it's amazing coincidence that a local rapper released a song with that exact same title/chorus? Or was Taylor working with Post Malone on the lyics?

Or maybe, just maybe, you have the timeline wrong and don't know nearly as much about the background and mindset of 19 year old black kid as you think you do?
oh ok. Is this the part where you did your heels in on a meaningless point, once again showing your propensity to lose the forest through the trees?Tell me Tobias, what was this innocent young black man doing at the car dealership? Shopping?
I don’t think that Tobias or anyone else is implying that this young man was not breaking the law, clearly he was. The question is when did breaking the law become an automatic death sentence?
It is for black kids in TsoWorld.

Hey - its a good start. Nice work, Mr. President. Now lets get it all back and end the 1033 program:

Ferguson forced to return Humvees as US military gear still flows to local police

The city of Ferguson, Missouri, is being forced by the Obama administration to return two military vehicles that it obtained from the Pentagon, amid widespread concern and criticism over the deployment on American streets of equipment intended for war zones.

The US Department of Defense will reclaim a pair of Humvees that were given to the beleaguered St Louis suburb under a controversial program to distribute surplus weapons, vehicles and other gear, according to several government officials involved in the process.

"They have simply informed us they will be taking them back,” Jeff Small, a spokesman for Ferguson, told the Guardian in an email.
---

“We want to make sure that any militarization reforms are permanent,” Bennett said. “The steps the administration has taken could be undone by the next administration, and we want to codify some of those reforms and, if there’s appetite, go further.”

The Pentagon’s controversial program to disburse surplus military equipment to local law enforcement, for instance, has seen more cosmetic change than substantive emendation.

The May directive, the major result of Barack Obama’s post-Ferguson “review” of police militarization, recommended that the so-called “1033” equipment distribution effort add oversight provisions, not ban currently provided tactical equipment, vehicles and weaponry.
This is no surprise at all but -

Police Requests for Military Gear Are Not About Fighting TerrorismMother Jones' Molly Redden has revealed more than 450 requests by police departments to the Pentagon's "1033 program," which over the past two decades has distributed more than five and a half billion dollars of surplus military gear, vehicles and weaponry to local PDs.

As U.S. involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to wind down, the federal government has been left with a glut of weapons and equipment, and many police departments want to get their hands on as much of it as they can.

What is striking about Mother Jones' analysis of the requests is that they rarely focus on using the gear to defend against terrorism, mass shooters, or hostage sieges. Instead, when it comes to requesting a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle (MRAP), "the single most common reason agencies requested (an MRAP) was to combat drugs."

A pretty reckless conclusion to be drawing given the scant evidence. Is the chief african-american by chance?

Interesting defense. This is going to massive implications of this works as a defense. No longer do you need a direct threat to shoot and kill, only the fear of what might happen. That bum tapping on your window for a dollar? He might have a knife and smash your window. Shoot him. That man walking sitting on a stoop at night as you walk home. He might be a robber. Shoot him.
It's viable depending on the circumstances. If there was evidence he was approaching Miller (or being aggressive in some way) then it seems feasible, if not, then I don't think Miller has a good claim. The toxicology report is going to be interesting. Taylor was acting very erratic (and aggressive) on the video. That might play in as well.

The firing actually makes sense. It looks like Miller made a lot of mistakes to get himself into this situation and he was a probationary officer. Regardless of what occurred inside I think it was the right decision (based on what we know).

Wouldn't you like to see the minutes preceding that video?
Short of him swinging his crutches (or leg) like a baseball bat, what would warrant that kind of response? And considering that they ultimately didn't even arrest him, I'm going to go ahead and assume that's not what he was doing.
And I'm not certain, but I don't think pulling down his pants is part of any police protocol for arresting a suspect. Given the lack of arrest/charges, I don't think the opening minutes are going to clear the police here.

Dude could have had a homemade zip gun embedded in the bottom of one or both of his crutches. Excellent takedown that saved countless lives.

Official Police Story About Shooting Of 14-Year-Old Begins To Unravel
When Radazz Hearns was shot seven times by police in Trenton, New Jersey earlier this month, police claimed the 14-year-old pulled out a gun and attempted to shoot them while running. Now, the attorney general’s office says those allegations are unsupported, and an eyewitness says Hearns was actually unarmed and trying to pull up his pants as he ran.

According to the attorney general’s office, Hearns was one of three teenage boys questioned by three Targeted Integrated Deployment Effort (TIDE) officers near an apartment complex, after a shooting was reported nearby. An anonymous police source alleged Hearns ran away from the cops and reached for what the officers thought was a gun. At one point, they say, Hearns turned around while running and attempted to shoot at them. The three officers opened fire, hitting Hearns seven times in the legs and butt.

Eyewitness Rhonda Tirado, who watched the chase and shooting from her home, paints a different picture of what happened. Tirado alleges the boys were laughing and joking for 15 minutes before the cops arrived near her house, and agrees that the three males were confronted by the officers. She also contends Hearns tried to flee. But Tirado says the teenager looked like he was trying to pull his pants up — not grabbing a weapon.

“Those police were amped and they didn’t give that little boy a chance,” she explained to NJ.com. “There was no room for no chase. They just shot that little boy right there.”

The attorney general’s office has since conducted a preliminary investigation and concluded that the anonymous police source’s claims are inconsistent with its findings. The family attorney representing the 14-year-old’s family, Samuel Anyan Jr, maintains Hearns was unarmed. A .22-caliber handgun was discovered at the scene later, but investigators have not connected the weapon to the boy.

“I don’t think those little boys had no clue what was going on,” Tirado continued. “I think they was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

All three officers are on administrative leave, and Hearns was released from the hospital on Monday.

So the kid killed by the St. Louis police on Wednesday was shot in the back.

I guess we are just so used to this by now it barely makes news.

Good Lord, not another one of these.
A nine year old girl gets killed in her house by gunfire while doing her homework.

A 93 year old former Tuskegee Airman gets robbed twice in one day.

Baltimore homicides have eclipsed their 2014 total already...and it's only August

etc...etc...etc

Why is it that the only outrage comes when a police officer shoots someone?

Makes perfect sense.

People keep pushing the police away.... it doesn't seem like it has worked out well for Baltimore thus far. St. Louis will be next.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/08/20/jamyla-bolden-shot-dead-in-ferguson/

A crowd gathered Wednesday evening to protest the shooting of an armed suspect by Missouri cops, but no mention was made of the 9-year-old girl who had been shot dead by an unknown assailant just seven miles away the night before.

Jamyla Bolden was killed doing homework on her mom’s bed and her mother was also wounded when someone began firing into their Ferguson home around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, according to Fox2Now.

Bolden had just returned from a birthday party when shots rang out. Jamyla’s mom, who was released from a hospital Wednesday morning, was wounded in the leg. Jamyla suffered more serious injuries. Her grandmother embraced her, imploring her to continue breathing as police tried in vain to save her.

“I kept holding and holding her,” the grandmother, who did not wish to be identified, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I still have her blood on my hands. She was still breathing. I was telling her to just breathe.”

No suspect has been arrested or even publicly named, though relatives said they believed police had identified a person of interest and think the gunman probably targeted the wrong house.

(CNN)A 93-year-old Tuskegee Airman struggling to find his daughter's house in St. Louis was robbed and then carjacked minutes later.

The World War II veteran got lost while trying to find his daughter's home Sunday morning and pulled over to call her, CNN affiliate KMOV reported.

That's when a suspect got into his car in broad daylight and robbed him. The assailant fled in another vehicle.

The victim tried to track down the robber, but to no avail. So he pulled over again to ask two men for help.

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/crime/blog/bs-md-ci-homicide-212-20150820-story.html

Two more men were killed — one Wednesday evening and the other Thursday afternoon — as Baltimore's homicide count for 2015 pushed past last year's toll.

The latest killing happened on a mostly vacant West Baltimore street about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, where police officers found a man shot multiple times.

An ambulance responded, but it was not needed: the man was pronounced dead at the scene, and detectives covered the body with a sheet as they searched the area for clues.

It was the city's 213th homicide this year, which exceeds last year's total of 211.

"Ever since that riot, everything has gone downhill," said Wesley Wilson, 48, as he looked on at the crime scene. He passes through the area every day to visit his neighborhood bar, he said, adding that it is typically a quiet area.

Those two men then carjacked the elderly man, KMOV said. The car was found two days later, St. Louis police said.

So right - so far the only evidence we have that he was brandishing a weapon at the cops is what the cops said. That's what I thought.

In addition to that, we know he was shot in the back and your dailymail article said he was fleeing from officers.

“My son’s fingerprints are not on that gun,” he said. “He was gunned down like a hog.”

So the kid killed by the St. Louis police on Wednesday was shot in the back.

I guess we are just so used to this by now it barely makes news.
No, I think people are tired of hearing about all the sympathy for drug dealing, gun wielding criminals who disobey orders from cops.
Is there evidence he was a drug dealer? (And is appropriate punishment for being a drug dealer the death penalty?) And is there any evidence that he had a gun besides the cops' word?
Yeah, you are right...I bet the cops are lying

So right - so far the only evidence we have that he was brandishing a weapon at the cops is what the cops said. That's what I thought.

In addition to that, we know he was shot in the back and your dailymail article said he was fleeing from officers.
lol where is your proof he didn't have a gun?

I can see why you think there is absolutely no chance he had a gun:

I actually don't know what happened. I just don't blindly accept what the cops said. Because contrary to what you believe - they lie all the time. (see link)

I would like the DOJ to investigate this because I don't trust the other cops to fairly investigate their fellow cops.

Baltimore Cop charged with attempted murder.

"While Leary and Smith were covering him with their guns drawn, Mosby said, Cagle walked in and stood over him with his gun drawn. The man said to Cagle, "What did you shoot me with, a beanbag?"

According to Mosby, Cagle replied: "No, a .40-caliber, you piece of [expletive]," and fired one shot."
For the record, I completely agree that this cop should be charged with attempted murder. If the man is on the ground with two guns drawn on him, there is no reason to shoot him.

But immediately vilifying cops every time someone is shot by an officer is jeopardizing the safety of this country.

Donkey Durp is a cop who thinks shooting people in the back is acceptable...thats the only reasonable explanation i can think of for his narrow view of this issue

I am not a cop. Your response sounds like it comes from Tobias' school of logic that something is spun to feed the media epidemic of reporting officer involved shootings. You can pose a threat to someone and still be shot in the back. Perhaps it is unlikely, but it can't be ruled out like everyone wants to do before the facts come out.

Exactly - a backwards bull rush is a scary thing!

lol. Not that hard to turn slightly, have a gun pointed backwards over your shoulder, and get shot in the back. It's really not.
