Another school shooting (1 Viewer)

Huge police present at all local school here.
I'll be honest, I don't really get this. Are they worried about copycats or something? Or is it just a show to make people feel better?
Make the kids feel more comfortable. The next catastrophic event won't happen at a school, it will happen in another public forum. Divert attention elsewhere then expose schools and other public forums again.

I just got an e-mail from my kid's school.

Jist of e-mail.

Parents, you may have noticed 3 armed police officers in front of the school this morning. Person A hired three officers because there was an altercation with a parent in our gym last night. Have a nice day. Principal.

Really? Just freak parents out a little more.

Just spitballing here, but how about if half a dozen parents (or more) patrolled campuses during school hours to alert authorities of strangers on the grounds? Some of them could just sit in their cars eating donuts and listening to the radio.

Seems like it could be done as volunteers, so no cost. And after an incident like this, it seems as if there would be no shortage of volunteers.
How are those parents going to prevent a shooting?
How does a barking dog prevent a burglary?Making noise when a bad guy approaches, often keeps the bad guy away.

If two moms on cell phones had been calling the achool and/or police when this guy came up to the Newtown school, maybe he would have moved along or been stopped or apprehended before so much carnage.
That may very well be a deterrent for some crimes, but when someone puts this much effort into what will end up being one of the most heinous mass killings of all time, Mom eating doughnuts calling Barney Fife to come stop a heavily armed and armored psycho isn't going to do much. These types of crimes are nearly unstoppable because they are so far from being believable. I'm not saying it has no merit in possibly preventing other things, but this, Columbine, VT, Aurora etc... nothing less than a SWAT team a block away on standby is going to do any good.
a ban on guns and a ban on bullets might also do some good.
Figures the libs would pollute this thread to the point of no return first.
The days of shouting this down are over bud.

Great speech.

Loved the donks in the game thread in the Shark Pool, e.g. "I can't believe I'm going to miss 15 minutes of SNF because I don't have cable!! This is BULL####!! (Granted, I've missed every Monday night and Thursday night game all year for the same reason, but this is where I draw teh line!! I'm going to ##### about it on the internet, which coincidentally is another place where I could watch the game, but I'm not going to watch it on the internet, just complain about it on the internet!?!)"

Some people need to get their #### straightened out.
Deadspin link to people commenting on twitter, "Take that N off TV, I wanna watch football." :(

ETA: VERY NSFW due to racist language.

I could see the school's legal counsel advising the principal to send that e-mail. That way, if the person involved in the altercation does return and hurt someone, the school could point to the e-mail and say that parents were placed on notice which gave them the option to take their kids out of school. It sucks to freak out the parents because the odds are that nothing will happen; but, if something ivolving that parent did happen, that e-mail might lessen the school's liability. It's about the school covering it's ###.

Dont read this if you dont feel like crying but these heroes' (including the little kids) stories need to be remembered.

Where do THEY get these accounts, though? The Post is okay if you are a fan of paparazzi pics.
Well - I'm guessing some of the kids said something and the police mentioned it in their report
There seems to be so many conflicting reports of what happened in that class. There were parents on the news saying their kids ran but made it past the gunman. It doesn't change the outcome, or what Soto did, but I'd like to know what happened.

Maybe this is slightly off topic, but does anybody know what both the Mom and the killer have been doing for the last three years. There has been no word with respect to the mom working, and the son seemed to have not even graduated from the high school. So it was just the two of them holed up in the house with her guns? Is this just a case where the kid was losing his mind, and the mom was either hiding it, or denying that he needed more help than she could give?
There is an article on the Daily Mail website that says that the mom was a survivalist that thought the breakdown of society was rapidly approaching. To the point she was hoarding food and supplies. Some people that knew her seemed to think she was barely keeping it together herself.I think it's very possible that she was mentally ill and fueled this whole thing. She may have had him convinced civilization was about the collapse to the point where he thought he was sparing his mom and the kids from dealing with that.
From wikipedia(with sources)
Adam and his mother were supported by alimony paid by his father, a corporate executive.

I'd like to, also, and hopefully more will come out. I did see an interview with parents - I thin their name was Licata, but not sure - and they definitely said their son ran right past the gunman.

Obviously the mythmaking in these events occurs relatively quickly. I'm sure the parents heard something to that effect from someone, but I'm sure Cassie Bernall's parents believe that "She Said Yes" even though it's pretty clear that never happened.

I would too. Most reports state that every child in that classroom was killed. The only kids that they found that survived were in Soto's room hiding. The kids killed in her room were shot when they tried to run.

Yeah I mean what are the chances the next incident happpens 3 days later and I don't know many places that can afford to maintain this level of security with budgets so screwed. Nice gesture, doesn't accomplish much though.

So it sounds like this guy picking the school to shoot up was completely random. This does lead me to believe that the idea of fame played into this. The constant 24/7 that every news channel has on this right now could be feeding some future psycho.

I am no longer going to tune into any coverage or read any news stories about it.

The Voice tribute on their show tonight. Oh man.
I made it literally about three seconds into that. Horrendous rendition of an amazing classic.ETA: Gave it another shot. Only made it about ten seconds in. I actually think it's so bad it's disrespectful to the victims.
You're the first person I've heard with a negative reaction to it. I thought it was a beautiful tribute. Thanks, Billy. I was just about to look for it online.

Care to expand on it's horrendous disrespectfulness??
 I thought it was an absolutely terrible rendition of a really great song. The candles looked nice, though, and I liked how they were all holding signs with the kids' names. I did finally end up listening to the whole two minutes of it and it did get a little better as it went on. But that guy at the beginning just butchered it.ETA: The bit about being disrespectful to the victims was way over the top, I admit. I was half asleep but that's no excuse, I didn't mean to come off as insensitive. I just really hated the way they did the song.

Okay, so you didn't care for their rendition. Hate is a very strong sentiment. Just sayin'...

 He got all the words right, was on pitch and matched the tempo. I'm not sure where the butchering occurred. Maybe you just dont like his voice? He did just fine. Good tribute on short notice.

Do these kids really need to be in school today? Why not just let them come back after the New Year?
I am not a parent, but I would think it is a good thing, i.e. "get back on the horse" vs. having time for fear to fester.
We're talkiing about kids 9 years old and younger missing about 3-4 days here. I would rather have them at home building up their trust in going back into a school building. Just my .02.

Dropped my kid off this morning. No cop cars outside. We always go in the side door. Completely unlocked. :hot:
There is some serious knee-jerk overreaction going on.
:goodposting: If you read that some guy across the country from you got struck and killed by lightning, would you spend the day staying inside?
What is this guy thinking driving his kid to school when 30000+ people die in car accidents every year?

Not sure if it has been mentioned in here all ready or not, why not post a member of the military at each and every school? All you would need is one soldier with his government issue rifle and/or sidearm. I think that would be pretty intimidating to some nutcase. Just make the school the place of duty for him/her and you're good. Wouldn't have to pay them anything since they are already getting paid by Uncle Sam. Just seems to easy to me.

I made it five seconds. There is a fine line between a beautiful tribute and a publicity grab. Holding up signs with the names of the victims and the ages crosses that line in my book.

How many troops do we have in non-combat arenas like Europe that we could spare? Sounds like a great solution. They get to come home (hopefully they could get stationed somewhere near their hometown if they have one), we get increased security at home, and kids get to see the cool soldier that protects them, and the Europeans have one less horrible American in their neighborhood (joke).Win-win. Great idea, if we have the numbers.

Yep, our soldiers are immune to suicidal tendencies.

hint: a mass murder is not an accident

Kids are pretty resilient. Think how you were when you were nine.

I get what you guys are getting at, but the comparison you make here is idiotic.
I would argue the opposite. Your concern is about the safety of your child, but you routinely ignore dozens if not hundreds of threats each day much more realistic and likely than your child being shot at school. On the way to school every car you drove past was easily more of a threat to your child.
