Another Vacation thread. Beach/Family/Toddlers.. Bad Idea? (1 Viewer)

I need a vacation.. badly. I have 5 days of vacation in May of '16

In May of '16 I'll have a 27 month old and an 11 month old.

I'd like to get to a beach or somewhere relaxing.

1) Am I an idiot to even attempt such a trip with young children? Would I be better off getting grandma to keep them for 3 days and just heading to Vegas with the wife or something?

2) is there anywhere in the continental US that would have warm water at that time of year to lounge in that's NOT FLORIDA (I have my reasons) - like Hilton Head or Outer Banks?

3) If not in the continental US, is it remotely viable to take them to a very close Caribbean Island like Bahamas or Turks and Caicos?

4) Will I want to kill myself at some point during the trip?

The resort has average food, average entertainment, but they make up for it by giving every family a nanny for their stay. So if you want to relax on the beach with a cocktail, do some water activities, go off the resort, whatever, you can do that here and the kids get taken care of just fine.

My wife was pressing me for a vacation this month, she is 7 months pregnant and my son just turned 3, I told her no chance in hell I'm going. Offered her the opportunity to go with my son to the Caribbean, I was told to #### off.

Jamaica has never really interested me compared to other Caribbean places.. but I'm going to think about this. It's not quite as close as Bahamas or Turks.

In a way this is sadly true.. I"m here in my private office posting on a message board and it's quiet for now.. at least until my afternoon appointments get going... and at home it's pretty noisy.

But man I just need to get the hell out of Dodge.

Sure for the kids. As a caveat, they'll have as much fun at a local playground.

Yeah, I hear you on this.. I mean it's a 1 and 2.5 year old... they won't remember it.. they won't care. They would like the local bounce house just as much for 1/1000th of the cost

Traveling with 1 child is brutal. With 2 toddlers...forget it especially if the reason for the vacay is you need a couple of days to relax. Go with option 1.

Your kids are at an age where they will have just as much fun 5 days at grandmaw's house. Leave the kids and relax with your wife on the beach. If she is one that will complain about leaving the kids or constantly check up on them, then leave her and go by yourself.

Love your kids, go on family vacations when they can appreciate it. And when you do go on family vacations my recommendation is to go with other families the kids age or bring the grandparents along if you get along with them.

Would you seriously fly with a 1 and 2.5 year old? If you don't kill yourself the other passengers probably would. So, leaving off the Caribbean, what about Galveston TX? Caveat, I've never been there but it would be about an 11 hour drive from KC, probably 14-15 with the kids, temps in mid-May, high low 80's, low mid 70's. It's got beaches but I've no idea how warm the gulf would be at that time.

I've taken kids to the beach, though probably more like 3 years old, and they can enjoy it. They can also be their typical tired and cranky selves.

When vacationing with kids that young, you can find moments to relax/enjoy yourself, but it will probably amount to 30 or 45 minutes per day tops. You should then decide how much you're willing to spend for that 30 minutes of true vacation per day. that's the way I would think about it. The good news is that travel gets better as they get older.

Galveston is a sewer. But South Padre isn't a bad option.

I was there mid-June and the water was super warm, at least 82-83. I asked and the folks who lived there said that folks start swimming in early April and the water warms up quickly. Near 80 I'd imagine. Charleston is also a pretty cool town. If you didn't hate Florida I'd have recommended Key West.
