Antonio Gates. Buy low? (1 Viewer)

I read that Rivers is looking to include Antonio Gates more in future games. So far Gates only has 10 catches for 122 yards and 1 touchdown. That has got to be below everyones expectations thus far. Does he improve over the year or is this the production that we can expect him to have from here on out. I tend to think that he will improve as they let Rivers throw more. What about future years for those in keeper or dynasty leagues?

Barring injury Gates is a top 3 TE in the NFL for the next 6 years. Although he hasn't caught as many passes nor TDs this season his targets have averaged 8 his past two games, which comes in second to Crumbler's 9.5 targets for his last two games.

Yes he will improve over the year.

He's one of the subjectsof this week's roundtable discussion, so I'll refrain from posting here, but the thoughts of some of the staff will be made clear this week.

Of course he'll rebound, both this year and future years. The question (at least for this year) is how much. Obviously a good buy low candidate, but any owner worth a flip is not going to sell low.

IMO best possibility is something like if you have depth in another area and can offer a player from that area (esp if it's a need for Gates owner) plus a decent TE to get Gates for upside.

Gates struggles this year seem to be self imposed rather then due to Rivers... he's dropped a couple that he should have held onto... 1 of which would have been a TD. Is he putting too much pressure on himself? I dunno... but i think he'll be a big part of the game plan next week vs Pitt... early and often

Gates will heat up. He basically has four types of games 1) the 50 yards and 1 TD type game 2) the 100+ yard and no TD type game 3) the less than 50 yard and no TD type game and 4) the blow up 100+ yard 3 TD type game (1 per year). As a Gates owner since the latter part of 2003 (dynasty), I can say that he goes in spurts sometimes and will dissapoint a handful of times a season, but he more than makes up for it and gives you that big weapon at TE that no other player at the position can deliver. If you're a Gates owner, just sit back and put that TE position on autopilot...no need to panic.

So you posted to let us know you aren't going to comment? :D

This situation intrigues me. How much does Brees' departure impact Gates? Thats the question that will be answered this year.

Being that I own Gates in one league, I was hoping that Rivers would not adversely effect his value... and although its early and SD's first two games don't serve as strong indicators (since they were so one-sided), I am starting to have my doubts. I think we'll have a much better idea about Gates in 2-3 weeks.

Is Gates a buy low candidate currently? I find it hard to believe that many Gates owners would sell low. I think they are still asking top dollar for him... at least I would be if I were looking to move him.

I also think he'll pick it up. I bought low or atleast what I thought was low getting him and the San Diego D for Colston and Michael Robinson. Not sure if I bought low on Gates or Sold high on Colston but either way I had to pull the trigger. Go see what your Gates owner is willing to do, you may be surprised.

Marty said on Monday that they need to get Gates involved more often. Marty could just be using coach speak, that is for you decide, but you can listen to the press conference here (OCT 2) -->> http://blog.chargers.com/ (Boltcast #23)

Marty rambles on about Marty ball for a good 20 minutes, but he does unearth some useful nugets if you can stand listening to him for that long. I for one believe they will be looking for Gates quite a bit, however the Steelers matchup this week isnt very favorable.

I am optimistic that he'll rebound. They didn't throw much the first two weeks, and even last week was relatively quiet with offense. We all kno wboth defenses there were very good.

Perosnally, I'm hoping for two big games for him and after Watson has his bye try to sell for a RB1/2. I've alreayd gotten an offer for McGahee straight up, but I can't figure out if that's a sell low or not :)

Your nuts if you don't take that offer for McGahee.

I've got Gates and Colston, so I'm only willing to make the trade for a WR that will outscore Gates over the remainder of the season since I can move Colston to TE.

My trading partners in theory should give me a WR who scores more than an elite TE just b/c of the positional advantage (VBD). But I've gotten little interest so far. Holt: no, CJ: no, Harrison: no, Wayne: no, TO: no, even the guy with freakin Chambers is "thinking about it."

Right now AG's value is super low due to the slow start and the Rivers factor in people's minds. It is not a good time to trade him, but with Pitt coming up, he may not have the break out game for another week or more.

I'm sticking with him unless I get real value.

I think this question is answered not when they "let" Rivers throw the ball, but when Rivers "must" throw the ball. No one else on that roster is in a better position to benefit than Gates. He's going to be the security blanket outside of LT. This craziness of believing the Bolts are simply going to run roughshod over the NFL this season is not gonna happen. He'll need to throw and Gates will be there.

Well, the offer was "mentioned" it wasn't actually made... Trading in this league is, well, tough going. Gates is particularly notorious in this league because he's been the focus of a lot of games in the last 2 years, and so his name goes far even if he's underperforming. I'm hoping McGahee struggles against Chicago and I can get an extra bonus if Gates were t have a good week.

I picked up Gates and Brees for B. Johnson, Foster and Bennett. I feel like he's a perfect buy low guy.
