Antonio Gates injury updates (2 Viewers)

The practice report indicated the Chargers didn't complete their practice as a team so there was no individual conformation if Gates practiced on Wednesday at all.Do any SD homers have more information regarding his practice?

If Gates doesn't go who will San Diego use at tight end? Justin Peelle is questionable along with Gates and Ryan Krause was just put on IR.

edited to add: Can anything be expected out of Landon Trusty?

From thecommish.tv, looks like Peelle is playing.

Still nothing definitive...

Gates not ready to test foot

JAY PARIS

11/24/2005

SAN DIEGO ---- Wednesday looked much like Monday for Antonio Gates. The Chargers' injured All-Pro tight end was hobbling around, his ailing right foot encased in a walking cast. Gates speculated Monday, one day after getting hurt against the Buffalo Bills, that he would test his foot on Wednesday.

But Wednesday came and went, and Gates' seemed no closer to playing on Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

"I think it's imperative I stay off of it right now and continue to get rest,'' said Gates, the team's leading receiver with 56 catches, 784 yards and seven touchdowns. "You don't want to try and test it and take a step backward. I want to continue to rest it and get treatment on it and sometime later on the week I will see how it feels.''

When the day is, Gates wasn't sure. And there's no rush in that coach Marty Schottenheimer's once hard fast rule of if you don't practice, you don't play, won't come into play with Gates.

"It's better than it was Sunday and it continues to progress,'' Gates said. "It felt better than it did (Tuesday). I'll just continue to mentally focus on the game plan this week. I won't be able to get the physical reps I usually get throughout the week; it's just day by day and we will see how it is by Sunday.''

If it hasn't improved, all eyes will turn again to Justin Peelle. It was Peelle who replaced Gates in the opener, when Gates was serving a suspension.

"I have to make some more plays; I got to play better than I did in the opener,'' said Peelle, a fourth-year pro. "I blocked fine in the opener. I just have to make plays in the passing game.''

Peelle's presence, unlike if Gates was fit, won't demand the full attention of the Redskins' defense.

"What, I got nine catches for (27) yards, something stupid like that,'' Peelle said. "They're not going to waste their coverage on me.''

Gates said the Chargers can still mix a potent offensive cocktail even without him.

"We got a lot of skill position players that can go out and make plays Sunday,'' Gates said. "As long as Drew (Brees) and all those guys get together I think we should be fine whether I'm there or not.''

Brees agrees.

"He a big part of what we do,'' Brees said of Gates. "But if he's not out there, we got plenty of weapons.''

Gates said Peelle, who didn't have a catch in the opener, won't be overwhelmed.

"He understands the position to a 'T' and he knows how to play this game,'' Gates said. "I feel confident in Justin being out there. I know he is going to do the right thing and make the right decisions on the field.''

Peelle is usually asked to clear running lanes. His role will be expanded Sunday if Gates can't get medical clearance.

"Everyone has to step up and make up for him if he doesn't play,'' Peelle said. "But from everything I've been told, he's playing. But who knows?''

Not Gates. Not on Wednesday.

"Eventually, I will attempt it sometime this week and see how it goes and just move on from that day,'' Gates said. "At some point, you would like to know the percentage of being able to play. And it's going to happen sometime this week, I just can't say what date.''

How about huge downgrade for my team and my playoff chances........
Well, it's obviously a huge downgrade for any team with Gates. But for those of us without him, we need to know how it affects other players in the SD offense.

LT will obviously catch a few more passes, but I think parker is a nice sleeper play this week. Also, just read on the blog that Gates is going to be the dreaded "Game time decision".

Missed practice on Thursday

Chargers | Gates misses practice, questionable for Week 12Thu, 24 Nov 2005 12:50:23 -0800San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) missed practice Thursday, Nov. 24, and is listed as questionable for Week 12. He is expected to be a game-time decision Sunday, Nov. 27.
He's supposed to "test" the foot today or tomorrow (Friday) but no word of the result or if he even tried it.

More info, some good news for Gates owners.

Chargers | Gates removes boot

Thu, 24 Nov 2005 13:22:24 -0800

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) was not wearing a boot as he had since Sunday, Nov. 20, on his injured foot. As noted earlier, Gates did not practice Thursday, Nov. 24. Gates looks to be on the low side of questionable for the team's Week 12 game.
From the Charger website
Tight end Antonio Gates did not practice Thursday, but he did see some progress with his sprained foot. The All Pro was out of the protective boot that he'd been wearing since Sunday.

"It's going right down to game time, but we're cautiously optimistic (that he'll be able to play Sunday)," Schottenheimer said. "He ran and cut and had a positive day."

Said Gates, "I tested it today. I'm going to wait until tomorrow and see how I feel. I'll have to see if it's sore. I'm going to prepare to play this weekend, take care of my foot and see what happens."

Sounds promising. It also sounds like Gates will be a risky play this week if he does start- he might feel good to start the game, but will he finish the game too?

I hope Gates doesn't play, and takes a few days off to get back to 100%, for the Chargers sake, and the sake of my FF teams in the playoffs.

i couldn't disagree more. i'm 7-4 and need his production. even at 75% D's still have to game plan him and he's still the best TE in the game. a must start.

Antonio Gates: Practices Thursday

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com

Friday, November 25, 2005

Update: Gates was able to practice with the Chargers Thursday for the first time since spraining his right foot last Sunday, the Associated Press reports.

Recommendation: "He did some work out here (Thursday)," said coach Marty Schottenheimer, who indicated that Gates' availability Sunday will probably be decided at game time. "We are cautiously optimistic. He ran and he cut. It was positive." For his part, Gates seems optimistic, saying, "I'm going to constantly prepare to play this weekend and take care of the foot."

I think Gates palys at less than 100%.He'll suit up, go out and decoy for them.Expect moderate numbers for Gates and a big game from McKardell.

Here's the question: are there any TEs that could realistically be on the roster of a Gates owner who will be better plays than Gates, even if he's far less than 100%?

I don't think this will happen if he plays. If Gates plays his bigges asset is using his body to shield himself from other players. And if he can get downfield at all he is still going to make plays and probably get a score as he is their best red zone option in the passing game.

It is not like R. Moss who needs seperation and jumping ability to make these plays and therefore he won't really be a decoy.

He is also a safety valve for Brees, and if he is out there Brees will not think twice about throwing it to him.

To answer your question, No. however, IF he does play (Marty's blowing smoke), don't you think Wash-D is going to target Gates in an effort to get him out of the game by attempting to aggravate the injury? Additionally, the normal questions apply. how effective will he be? decoy? how much playing time? add nausea...yes, I agree Gates at 75% is still better than most TEs at 100%.

Unless Marty is quoted after today's practice that Gates will play, I'm benching him for Cooley.

I don't trust info from KFFL, but good news nevertheless.

picked this blurb up off cbs.sportsline,Antonio Gates, TE SDNews: Chargers tight end Antonio Gates practiced for the second day in a row Friday and reported no setbacks with the sprained right foot that has him listed as questionable for Sunday's game with the Washington Redskins. Gates appeared to be moving well during the portion of practice open to the media. "It was basically the same as yesterday -- it got a little bit better," Gates said. "I think it's still going to be a game-time decision for us." Coach Marty Schottenheimer said Gates "did OK" during drills. "We'll see. We'll decide Sunday."Analysis: So far, so good. He will be a gametime decision, and is a must-start in all formats when healthy.

I wonder if it's possible that the injury eliminates him as an open-field threat (where he'd have to run and take tackles), while still allowing him to an effective end zone target.

Not exactly on thread but... Does it seem that significant TE injuries are WAY down from last year? Seem to remember 5 or 6 of the top 10 rated TE's missing time in 04 and scrambling for a WW TE became a weekly item on my "To do" list.

Chargers | Gates no lock to playSat, 26 Nov 2005 06:52:03 -0800Jay Posner, of the San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) is not locked into playing in the team's Week 12 game. Asked if he could play with his foot feeling the way it did Friday, Nov. 25, Gates said, "It'd be tough. We're going to have to really sit down and we're going to have to talk. It'll definitely be a game-time decision." Head coach Marty coach Marty Schottenheimer said: "He did OK. We'll see. The thing that does give me cause for some optimism is that he's no more uncomfortable today than he was yesterday. We'll wait and see. We've still got some time. We'll make a decision just before the game."

Foot Sprain

How long will the effects last?

The length of recovery depends on many factors such as your age, health, and if you have had a previous foot injury. Recovery time also depends on the severity of the sprain. A mild foot sprain may recover within a few weeks, whereas a severe foot sprain may take 6 weeks or longer to recover.
I'm pretty sure Antonio's sprain is mild- the MRI showed nothing significant.
When can I return to my normal activities?

Everyone recovers from an injury at a different rate. Return to your activity will be determined by how soon your foot recovers, not by how many days or weeks it has been since your injury has occurred. In general, the longer you have symptoms before you start treatment, the longer it will take to get better. The goal of rehabilitation is to return you to your normal activities as soon as is safely possible. If you return too soon you may worsen your injury.

You may safely return to your normal activities when, starting from the top of the list and progressing to the end, each of the following is true:

* You have full range of motion in the injured foot compared to the uninjured foot.

* You have full strength of the injured foot compared to the uninjured foot.

* You can walk straight ahead without pain or limping.
I know the Washington game is important, but having Gates healthy for the rest of the season is more important. I think the key to the GTD is going to be whether he can make it worse by playing.

What the hell is Marty saying? Wouldn't that be cause for some concern? Am I the only one confused by this statement?

I wish the owners in my league didnt trust KFFL. It would make life so much easier.

I think he means that Thursday's practice had no negative effects (swelling, stiffness, range of motion, etc...) that limited him in Friday's practice. If so, what would that mean? He's still hurting, but not experiencing any set backs. hence, status quo. I don't think this is good news. What happens when Lavar Arrington comes over and stomps on his foot during a tackle? I don't think he plays tomorrow.

I misread it actually... thought it said 'no more comfortable'. As usual, I'm an idiot.

To answer your question, yes. I had Gonzalez in a dynasty league and I picked up Gates before the 2004 season. No one will give me what I consider fair value for either, so I have both.

As of now I am starting Cooley in place of Gates. If Gates is a go Sunday morning I will change to gates.

Cooley is playing for me regardless. Gates is too risky this week.

San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) did not suffer any setbacks during Week 12. He is expected to be fine for Week 13.

Has there been any updates? Practicing, etc. ok? Just checking. Our WW deadline for the year is this week, so I want to make sure I'm covered.
