Antonio Gates injury updates (1 Viewer)

I don't see any real value in any of the Chargers' other TEs if Gates does miss time. Yes, they'll be on the field, but that doesn't mean they'll be targetted. Remember, when Gates was out in week one the other TEs only had two receptions -- both by Justin Peelle, and both for negative(!) yards. If Gates went down early in a game I could see the Chargers deciding to stick with the game plan and use a backup in the same way they use Gates, but with a week to prepare I doubt they use their TEs for much beyond blocking.

nothing is confirmed.
Chargers tight end Antonio Gates, who left Sunday's game against the Bills in the 3rd quarter with a foot injury, says he is currently "day to day."Gates met with local media on Monday, smiling the entire time, but wearing a protective boot on his right foot.

An x-ray and MRI proved negative, and he will test out the injured foot on Wednesday, he said.

He disputed televised reports that the injury was "season ending."

For us Gates owners, this has to come as pretty good news.

When tight end Antonio Gates left Sunday’s win over the Buffalo Bills following a foot injury, Chargers fans held their breath. The Bolts and their faithful followers are now collectively exhaling sighs of relief following good news from the All Pro on Monday.

X-rays of Gates’ foot came back negative and an MRI showed nothing significant. An upbeat Gates was in a protective boot as he addressed the media Monday. There’s a chance San Diego’s leading receiver will be able to play Sunday when the Bolts travel to the Nation’s Capitol to face the Washington Redskins.

“My foot feels a lot better,” Gates said. “It’s just day by day. I’m preparing to play this week.”

Gates was injured after making a 21-yard reception on 3rd-and-8 with 9:18 remaining in the Chargers’ 48-10 win over the Bills at Qualcomm Stadium. Gates caught a quick slant from quarterback Drew Brees and turned up field.

“I caught the ball and viewed the safety coming across,” Gates said. “I tried to make a move on (Lawyer Milloy), but I knew that the linebacker was chasing me. As I planted on my right foot, (Angelo Crowell) dove parallel to the ground and turned my foot outward.”

Gates joked that if he was a bit faster he could have gotten away from Crowell.

“With my five-second (40-yard dash) time, I just couldn’t pull away,” Gates said.

As Gates hobbled off the field Sunday afternoon, the immediate outlook didn’t look good. But after reaching the sideline, it didn’t take long for Gates to begin feeling better.

“When you hurt your foot like that, it immediately goes numb,” Gates said. “That’s what I felt. As I relaxed and slowed down, the feeling started to come back. I started feeling better. I got up and I was ready to go back in the game because I knew another third down was coming up.”

It’s still uncertain if Gates will be able to practice Wednesday, but he’s going to give it his best shot.

“We’ve got a tremendous training staff that does a great job knowing when you should go back out and when you shouldn’t,” Gates said. “I really haven’t tested it at all. I’ve been in this boot since the moment it happened. I’ve been icing and treating it. Wednesday will be my first time to see how it feels.”

Gates is the team leader in receptions (56) and receiving yards (784) and is tied with Keenan McCardell for the team lead in touchdown catches with seven. Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer was among the most relieved at the good news Monday.

“You don’t ever like to see any player sustain any type of injury,” Schottenheimer said. “In his case, he’s a big part of what we’re doing as a football team. We have the good fortune of the football gods smiling on all of us.”

Not this is any more informative than what anyone else is saying...in fact..it's probably less, but ESPN's bottom line says day to day as well.

ESPN:

"My foot feels a lot better," said Gates, whose foot was in a protective boot. "It's just day by day. I'm preparing to play this week."

Coach Marty Schottenheimer said the team's relief was "considerable."

I'm chalking this up to early week optimism...And that's a product of my early week pessimism.

Could Vincent Jackson be tried out at TE?  He's got the height...
No.
I could see them playing K.Osgood a little more. He's big & slow. He's a WR though
As far as I know, Landon Trusty is healthy.Otherwise, they'll probably use an extra WR on most downs, and possibly play Bob Hallen at TE in short-yardage situations.
Plus Krause & Peelle, but I think one of them is hurt too.

Krause & Peelle are hurt, so the next guy in line would be Trusty (who I think is on the practice squad).Maybe Peelle will be healthy enough by next week, but I figured the question about whether VJ would play TE was asked under the assumption that both Peelle and Krause would be unavailable.

I have a big-time man crush on Gates. Anyone else?
Yes I had him last year and HAD to get him this year. Traded Shockey & Parker for him. I also bought a real Gates jersey in September. Im floating on cloud nine right now!

I need a Gates jersey even though I am a Bills fan.I think Gates & Doss are the only 2 outta town jerseys I could get. Maybe some other Buckeyes.

:hey: :hey: Guilty!
:hey: Only other players to outscore him this year (PPR):

LT

SA

Westy

Edge

Lamont Jordan

Steve Smith

Marvin Harrison

Chad Johnson

Fitz

Not bad for a TE
When you look at it from a VBD perspective, he may be the most valuable player in fantasy football right now. Even the drop off to the #2 guy is pretty large.

Rackers would give him a run for his money.

Anyone that ownes Gates in a league that requires a TE should have a man crush on the guy! I was laughed at for making him one of my 3 keepers in a PPR, TE required league. The guy is a monster with unmatched value. No other player gives you the guaranteed advantage at any position like Gates. Just hope he comes back quick and healthy....

Hold the phone...in my TE not required league, he's the 6th ranked wide receiver. This guys value goes beyond TE-only leagues.

In my TE required league which gives .5 pt per reception only to TEs hes averaging around 14 pts which would make him the #2 WR

Obviously, but I mentioned TE required leagues specifically because in that format he is debatably the overall most valuable player to own. That would not be the case in leagues that do not require a TE.

"Gates said he considered going back into the game "because I knew third down was coming up," but the training staff shut him down." Got this from the info that pops up on Yahoo about players, this one was from KFFL, whatever that is. It made me laugh.

Got it...true.I turned down a trade of Torry Holt for Antonio Gates in a no Tight End league. There's only a handful (maybe) of guys I'd take straight up for Antonio. CJ, TO (pre blowup), Steve Smith...can't think of any others off the top of my head.

While I agree the Chargers all sound a little overly optimistic, I tend to think he'll play this week for the following three reasons:1) There's no structural damage.2) He sounds like he's planning to play.3) The Chargers have no margin for error in trying to make the playoffs. There's no chance they'll be cautious just to be cautious if he is healthy enough to play.

From KFFL:Chargers | Gates limited, questionable for Week 12Wed, 23 Nov 2005 15:51:47 -0800San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) missed a portion of practice Wednesday, Nov. 23, and is questionable for Week 12.

KFFL:Chargers | Gates will be game-time decision for Week 12Wed, 23 Nov 2005 18:27:58 -0800Bernie Wilson, of the Associated Press, reports San Diego Chargers TE Antonio Gates (foot) will probably be a game-time decision for the Week 12 game. Gates said, "It feels good, man. It feels better than it felt yesterday. That's always a good sign. I really didn't try to do much with it. I think the key for me is not to try to do anything, put no pressure on it, stay off it and let it rest, let it heal." He said he will definitely test his foot either Thursday, Nov. 24, or Friday, Nov. 25.

He didn't practice today. He's still in a boot (which he hasn't taken off since Sunday). I've read in a couple places that he hopes to practice either Thursday or Friday, but Jim Laslavic is reporting that he will not practice all week. The team is preparing to play without him, but Gates is calling himself a game-time decision.

If Gates doesn't play:Huge upgrade to McCardell.Slight upgrade to LT.Downgrade to Brees.Anyone see that differently? (I know most of you are Gates owners, and I'm sorry...but someone had to bring it up). :pickle:
