Any chance J. Harrison pushes Droughns? (1 Viewer)

I've been reading a bit about Jerome Harrison and seems to be having a very solid camp and turning some heads. IMO Droughns is a solid grind it out kind of back but nothing special. Can anyone forsee Harrison pushing Droughns for playing time as the season wears on or will he be strictly relegated to a 3rd down role?

How are the other parts of Harrison's game? Recieving seems excellent, but how about blocking?

An offense of optimism

Edwards, Winslow, Harrison show positive signs on the way

Reuben Droughns returned to the Browns on Tuesday with his mind clear, his legs fresh and his head turned just a bit at the rookie back seemingly gaining on him.

"The guy's got talent. I know I have my resume ready in my locker," Droughns said with his customary chuckle.

He was speaking of Jerome Harrison, who had 107 rushing and receiving yards in four quarters of action against Detroit last week.

"You never know what can happen. I could be moved back to fullback and special teams," Droughns said. "I think he's good. I think he's a great talent and will only help this team."

Droughns returned from Denver on Tuesday after having a trial date on misdemeanor domestic charges scheduled for Feb. 5.

"From the start, there wasn't going to be a dis traction in the season because I'm not going to put my team in jeopardy like that," Droughns said. "I was trying to fo cus on the season, re gardless. It's a little bit easier now."

Besides Droughns be ing cleared to play with out interruption this season, the following developments might prove this is the week the Browns' offense makes it over a very large hump:

On Friday, Harrison emerged as the change-of-pace back in passing sets the team sought in the draft.

"I thought you saw a little bit of what he can do, especially that three-wide receiver set with him catching the ball and running screens," quarterback Charlie Frye said.

"I think he's a multidimensional back and he'll be able to improve our offense."

I don't think so. Harrison will get work, don't get me wrong - he's got terrific change of direction skills, and he seems very natural out in pass patterns. But most of his yards last week came on draw plays where he had a lot of open space to work with. I don't think he could cut it as a 20-25 carry guy - I won't until I see him run inside successfully against NFL Ds.

He won't pass Droughns, but it did take him about 2 seconds to move past Green and Suggs. I haven't decided whether that's impressive or not! :D

I'm thinking he'll probably be too small but he's doing fine and turning heads so far.

I have to disagree. He wore defenses out behind a very marginal line and he was nothing but productive between the tackles while always getting stronger late in games. He isn't going to power through NFL defenses for an extra three yards, but he'll hit the holes between the tackles with burst and make what's there seem like more than most backs can (Tiki-like). Prior to the the draft, Construx pried my final RB rankings out of me, and I had Harrison 3rd behind Bush and Williams. I'm standing by that. He is better than Maroney, White and Addai, imo (but opportunity wieghs heavy for fantasy purposes). Just read what Droughns is saying. Harrison is a classic pure runner. He doesn't have tremendous speed or power, but he is super quick, very durable, takes what's there and makes big plays with regularity. I even read he's ahead picking up blitz packages (Droughns being his tutor). I loved Cleveland's draft and he is the icing on the cake. SOD? Maybe. One thing I've been noting about all these 06 rookie backs is, with the exception of White and Calhoun, they look the same in the NFL so far as they did in college. Harrison looked a little better than most these guys in college and he still does. Btw, I felt the same way about Maroney's solid performance as you did Harrison's. He got so much credit for yards after contact, but on each run the contact wasn't in position to tackle him, and he was sort of running into off balance defenders. It looked better than it was. If Harrison had those carries, there'd have been no contact. ;)

That's a totally fair take. Harrison could definitely be a Tiki type if you're looking for a best case scenario. I am still very high on Harrison insomuch as I think he will pay off big time for the Browns for a 5th round pick, however I'm not sure they will ever cast him as a feature back. Can he make it as a feature back if he gets the chance? Maybe. Will he get the chance? That's the rub. What has surprised me most about Harrison is his feel for getting open out in a pass pattern - I thought Calhoun and Norwood were the RBs that had a WR streak in them - but Harrison has been the most impressive in that aspect of the game so far.

No won't replace Droughns, but he will vulture carries. I think that's probably a good thing, becuase Droughns wore down at the end of the season.

I'm thinking this is alot like the Rudi Johnson/Chris Perry speculation last year.
I acutally could see him putting up Chris Perry like numbers now that you bring it up.Good comparison as far as situation goes.Keep in mind hes a rookie, so expectations are not so high becasue of his youth and not becasue of his talent.Who knows..., if he bulked up abit after this season I think he could carry the rock the whole game.As far as this year though even if he was better than Droughns he needs the experience and will be a solid 3rd down back for now, IMO.And for those of us who got Jerome Harrison late... :HighFive:

Make no bones about it, Norwood and Calhoun have much better hands than Harrison. The same quicks that make Harrison an elusive runner also make him a nice route runner, cutting and separating, and his hands are serviceable. I also agree about opportunity. It may never come, and when it does, how good is it really? I'll take Maroney in the Pats offense thanks, but I like Harrison more as a player. Need more :banned:

When the Eagles drafted Westbrook (in the 3rd round?), no one expected him to be more than a change-of-pace back. Less than two years later he was the #1 guy. So ya never know.

Same with Tiki Barber same with Warrick Dunn.Size is analyzed too much. Your either a football player or not.Meanwhile DeAngelo Williams has a shot as being a bust in my eyes because he is going down so easy on first contact. Let's see how Williams plays tonight against a tough Dolphins run d. Since both teams expect to play their starters for a half he should get a few carries in relief of Deshaun Foster against the first team defense.Jerome Harrison is a great young prospect who makes a compelling pick in Dynasty drafts. I made sure I snatched him up in most of my new Dynasty drafts and I was able to land him in a rookie draft in the 3rd round this year ( it was before training camp). I love what I saw out of him in college and I feel he will become a feature runner in the next 2 years for the Browns. Droughns is a solid RB and will be the guy this season. But Harrison is a homerun threat, can catch the ball and will be in the 3rd down role as well as a change of pace back. I can easily see him getting 150 touches, an average of 9.3 a game. And he should make some big plays this season. He looks like the second coming of Tiki. I expect him to bulk up a little more in the off-season going into 2007, just like FWP did for this season.

Except for the fact that Droughns gets no TDs. Not saying Harrison would behind that debacle they call an o-line either, but while Rudi had 12 last year and Droughns had.... 2. :PMy point is, Rudi hasd a nose for the end zone that Droughns doesn't appear to -- his best year he had 6. Rudi had 9. The only reason people are so hot to toss Rudi for Perry is Rudi doesn't catch out of the backfield. Otherwise, I can't understand why they would make the change.Again though, the difference between Rudi's O-line and Droughns is pretty significant so far.Back to the thread topic though -- I think HArrison COULD push Droughns for time as the offence might struggle a lot and the Browns might just wanna see what the kid has.But overall, I think Droughns holds the job - he's got more experiance and might handle the inevitable setbacks better.IMHO. :hey:

:goodposting: And then I snagged him before you in Z30. :D

I can't remember what draft site had a video highlight package of his last year (maybe Allen T's site??), but it was damn impressive. He actually looked the best against his two best opponents/biggest games, USC and UDub. One of the runs against USC, IIRC, he shakes a couple of arms at the line, jukes the LB and then runs through a pretty good tackle attempt by the safety, Bing maybe, by keeping his balance and gets into the endzone.

I think he can run some between the tackles due to quickness, wiggle and vision. I also think he can hold up to 20-25 carries a game. Now, I'm not saying he can carry it 25 times a game up the middle. But give him some off tackle, misdirection stuff combined with normal G-T hole runs and I think he can be an every down back. Probably won't happen this year though.

A good preseason game means nothing. He's talented, and he will get lots of work on third downs, but he's not going to usurp the job of a 1,000 yarder.

He play a lot of special teams, but not much action at RB. Droughns is the man in Cleveland. It's kind like SD, is Turner is going to take any meaning full carries away from LT, just because he looks good in pre season

"Make no bones about it, Norwood and Calhoun have much better hands than Harrison."

In both practices and games I've seen Harrison drop a total of 2 passes. I'm not saying he's great, but I'm not sure how they could be better.

Harrison's hands are fine, very serviceable for an RB. Calhoun and Norwood have WR hands. Before transferring to Wisconsin, Calhoun's college coach wanted to convert him to WR. After watching him make several spectacular grabs, some scouts were thinking Norwood could be an NFL WR. Not a knock on Harrison, but those guys have suction cups. I like Harrison better as a back anyway.

Ok I see where your coming from, but I'm really impressed with Harrison's hands too. I'm still not sure he's any worse despite a coach or scout wanting him to change positions.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:“I got my résumé ready in my locker. Hey, whatever helps to make the team a little better, that comes before your pride. You have to focus on the team more than yourself. I think he's a great talent. He'll only help this team."—running back Reuben Droughns, on fellow RB Jerome Harrison.

Anybody watching the game? How does the first team offense look? I took a chance a chance on Jerome in a 14 team team dynasty auction where you start 2 RB, 2wr and 2 flex players. You have do to get a diamond in the rough to cash.

You did well to take Harrison when you did. He will be more then a 3rd down back this year, and could be a feature back in the future. No way Droughns get as many carries as he did last year. I believe I read somewhere that last year, no RB had a higher percentage of his teams carries then Droughs. That wont be the case this year, as Harrison will get some playing time. Hard to say how much so far.

Cleveland will probably run the ball 400 times this year, and as long as Droughns gets 280-300 of those carries (which I think is realistic), he should have a similar season to last year...maybe a few less yards, but probably more TDs.

Just got back from the Bills game. I live 15 minutes away. LEft when backups came in.

Harrison looked alot better then Droughns... we are talking the BILLS too. They were both playing against first stringers.

Just my take.

I love my DVR. I use the DVR and I can review the the game tomorrow in about 30 Minutes. I wish I had one earlier. Jerome's stat line looks good but can be misleading. Now I can do my own homework.

Trust this. Harrison will be a big part of the Browns offense!!!

A good chance a bigger part then Droughns!

And people within the Bropwns organazation has known this from day 1. Why the experts cant pick up things like this I will never understand. But this is a good example of why I win fantasy football leagues. lol I draft Harrison and not Droughns!

Not trying to argue, but really? more involved than Droughns? I really can't see this happening, right?

I think this will be a case of doing more with less opportunities.

Expect him to be used in a reggie bush type role. He will line up as a WR and he'll be shifted alot to try to get a matchup vs a LB. I'm not sure how many touches he'll get a game yet, but I'll bet they continuously go up as the season progresses.

What's he doing on waivers in dynasty leagues? Interesting note. In the fourth quarter this weekend the Bills drove the field and tied the game. It's just preseason, but in those situations the like to go get a win. That too is good practice. The fourth quarter was supposed to be William Green's. He had all the carries so far. Harrison hadn't had a carry since the second quarter, when he looked fine with and against first teamers.

But, Romeo called Harrison's number for the final drive. Not only did he produce, but all three runs were up the middle, something some want to see him do.

(2:00) D.Anderson pass incomplete deep left to T.Wilson [K.Williams]. Underthrown, receiver at CLV 40.

2-10-CLE19 (1:55) J.Harrison up the middle to CLV 35 for 16 yards (C.Wire).

1-10-BUF27 (:23) (No Huddle, Shotgun) J.Harrison up the middle pushed ob at BUF 16 for 11 yards (K.Thomas).

1-10-BUF17 (:11) D.Anderson FUMBLES (Aborted) at BUF 18, and recovers at BUF 17.

2-11-BUF17 (:04) J.Chandler 35 yard field goal is GOOD, Center-R.Pontbriand, Holder-K.Basler.
That's 38 yards up the gut on two first and 10s and one 2nd and 10, and it set up the game winning field goal. That's some nice work. Granted he was going against Buffalo's scrubs, but he was also going with his own scrubs. Jerome Harrison got game.

In a 13 team IDP league, I slept on him and grabbed him in round 28 and nobody knew anything about him......... thanks FootballGuys!

Ive owned him in my leagues for about a week and a half now. Before last preseason game. After last night, 3 people tried adding him only to find I had him. And 2 of them offered trades like Maurice Drew, and D. Gabriel.

The only thing I dont know about him is if he can be a starting back and carry the load. He's got the skills to do everything else though. I like him ALOT. Better than Addai... and not just based on preseason. His Videos on you tube are pretty damn great.

I dont know. He's got moves. If he cant beat out Corners downfield, thats OK from a RB.

I don't judge running backs simply on speed, but good Lord. When you're getting run down by linebackers in college, WTF are you going to do in the NFL? Especially when you're supposed to be the change of pace/3DRB. I was under the impression your scatback was supposed to be fast, my bad.

Straight line speed is the most overrated running back trait. There are lots of RBs that can not out run DBs or even LBs for more than 30 yards, yet are successful in the NFL. The fact is that there are much, much fewer opportunities for RBs to need to outrun some one on a "breakaway" run that the casual fan believes. Of the top 10 RBs in runshing yards last year, only 4 of them had a run longer than 50 yards. In 2004, there were also only 4 of the top 10 with a run longer than 50 yards. Given that by the time the running back needs to outrun a defender with simple straight line speed he's usually 15-20 yards down field, he really only has to out run the defender 20-30 yards to make it a "long" run. I think that Harrison has enough speed to do that.

He's got the skills to do everything else though. I like him ALOT. Better than Addai... and not just based on preseason. His Videos on you tube are pretty damn great.
You mean the videos that have everyone and their mom running him down from behind?
LOL, if that's how you judge your RBs, then enjoy Trung Canidate.
I don't judge running backs simply on speed, but good Lord. When you're getting run down by linebackers in college, WTF are you going to do in the NFL? Especially when you're supposed to be the change of pace/3DRB. I was under the impression your scatback was supposed to be fast, my bad.
I forgot about your last sentence. No, your scatback is not supposed to be fast. He's supposed to be quick. Big difference and I believe that Harrison is plenty quick. Everyone saw the Norwood run on Saturday night. I think that Harrison could have made those same moves, but might have been caught from behind around the 15 yard line or so. If that means he's not good enough to start for the Browns, then they have some serious issues. :D

No, but he will see alot of playing time this year. He's been very very good on 3rd downs and screens/draws on any down.

Harrison does not have elite straight line speed. Yes, he usually gets caught from behind when he breaks away. HOWEVER - he does get up to top speed very quickly AND he has the quicks to get in the open field and break away in the first place.
