Anybody been to Scotland? (1 Viewer)

bueno

In a class by himself
Have to be in London the first week of November but I'll have some free time after some meetings and thought I´d go see Skaera Brae (sp?). Seems like all the advertised paqckages close up in October.

Anybody know - is Skaera Brae even open in November?

Cold and dark and rainy in November. Don't know the place, but Scotland is not exactly the garden of Eden in the late fall/winter.

Spent July 2001 - January 2002 there. While the weather might not be great during this time or any time (alot of rain), the place is fantastic for histroy, architecture, and atmosphere, particularly in Edinburgh.

If you are looking for a good hostel try the Castle Rock Hostel, which is right on the end of the Royal Mile below the castle. I lived there for 6 months.

Website says it is, but Skaill House isn't.I'll second the recommendation for Edinburgh. I spent a couple days there in July and enjoyed it. My son was there in January and although the weather was a little nasty, he still had a great time.

Sites like that in the UK are usually open year round.

I will third the reccomendation for Edinbrough! Went backpacking 2 years ago, and went to 32 cities in Europe, and it was in the top 3.

....St. Andrews was amazing to see, too, if you are a golf fan. I also took a 3 day tour up to the Isle of Skye, the Scottish Highlands. Very cool area of the world!

Edinburgh is beautiful. Check Edinburgh Castle, as it has a great view of the city. Be sure to check out Mons Meg. They dont like you messing with the cannons :loco: I also visited Loch Lamonde and Loch Ness. Both very beautiful.

Haven't been to Skara Brae but I'll cast another vote for Edinburgh. Start from Edinburgh Castle then go down the Royal Mile to Holyrood House -- lots of old buildings and old crosses on both sides. 4 1/2 hours by train from London or you can take the overnight sleeper. Bring an umbrella cuz it rains half the time.
And, when you're walking down the Royal Mile, don't miss the Scotch Whiskey Museum--or the free samples in the gift shop.

Went to St. Andrews for a golfing trip last September. Just played golf and drank St. Andrews Ale and Old Peculiar for 7 days, so can't comment on the rest of the country!

I've got two friends who live there: french guy living in Edinburgh, and a northern irish guy living in St. Andrews. Both of them like it a lot up there.

I'd make it up there at some point if I have more vacation time and €. Also too bad the $ sucks nowadays. GDB 2$ = 1£

Loch Lamond is nice; my wife and I stopped at a little place called Luss one morning. Beautiful scenery and quiet. The Isle of Mull was very nice as well. Okay, the whole place was nice. Just go, you won't regret it, wherever you end up.

I am planning a trip this summer for a two week stay in Edinburgh.

What should I do and see while in Scotland?

going for work or visiting relatives?
Just for work related stuff ; relatives live in England.
I've only been to Scotland once, it was beautiful. We stayed in a very small town on Loch Lomond for 3 nights, visiting friends. And I only spent a day in Edinburgh. We did a boat ride on the loch, which was really nice. I don't have more to recommend then whats already in the thread. Have fun.

Golfing is a must if you golf. North Berwick, a bit East of Edinburgh is a great, affordable old course that borders the Firth of Forth. There's a cool castle there as well - Tantalon.

I would suggest driving up to Inverness and stopping at Culloden if you're into Scottish history. If you have time drive to Aberdeen, then over to Inverness and then over the Isle of Skye and do some Scotch tasting through the different regions. Isle of Skye is particular cool with great natural sites and castles to see.

You can also likely find a Highland games festival somewhere (usually some good ones near Glasgow).

Planning on making the trip either May or September '15. (before or after midge season) 20+ of us will be staying at the clan's ancestral castle. Just west of the Loch Lomand and The Trossachs National Park.
