Anybody use Uber or Lyft ridesharing? (1 Viewer)

Buddy was waiting for a cab with his girl downtown last night.. She was freezing. After him calling the cab company back and them telling him to be patient it would be a bit, I fired up Uber.... 4.5x surge. #### that.

Opened LYFT. Had them a Car within 3 mins. Told the lady I wasn't riding but to take them out to cordova. South main to wolfchase area; $45. Taxi would have been 60+. Told him to tip her $10 too.

Got a text from the driver informing me she had dropped them off safe and sound. Rated her 5 stars.

Is UBER in Vegas?

Just wondering how that works? I have a friend who drives limos that will not go into Vegas because the mob is still so heavily tied to the cab industry there and do not like outside interference.

They are trying to get into Vegas but seem to be having some problems with powers that be. They have to wait until a hearing next week IIRC.

Uber scored an early victory in court today when a Clark County District Court judge declined to issue a temporary restraining order that would have prevented the ride-sharing company from operating in Las Vegas.

The company’s legal battles are just beginning, though, and its drivers still face the risk of being cited and having their vehicles impounded if caught by taxicab regulators.

Here’s what happened today and what to expect next:

The hearing

Today’s hearing concerned a temporary restraining order sought by the Nevada Attorney General’s Office on behalf of the Nevada Transportation Authority and the Nevada Taxicab Authority.

If granted, the restraining order would have prohibited Uber from operating in Las Vegas until more evidence could be presented at a future hearing. A similar restraining order against Uber was approved on Tuesday by a Washoe County judge.

The arguments

The core of Senior Deputy Attorney General David Newton’s argument was that companies that offer rides for hire in Clark County must obtain a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the taxicab authority.

Obtaining the certificate comes with a variety of requirements involving how fares are charged, how drivers are screened and how vehicles are inspected and maintained.

Uber does not have the required certificate and, as such, is an unlicensed operator not allowed to conduct business in Las Vegas, Newton said.

On the other side, attorney Donald Campbell said Uber is not a transportation company but a software company. He described the company’s app, which allows users to order rides through their smartphone, as a “scaffolding” that connects riders with a network of independent drivers.

Much of the argument centered on whether the ride services made possible by Uber were being offered and advertised to the public.

Campbell argued that because users must sign up for the app, Uber’s service is being marketed only to that digital community, not the public at large.

The decision

Judge Douglas Herndon said Newton’s arguments didn’t meet the criteria needed for a temporary restraining order, which requires the plaintiff to show a reasonable chance at success in the case and that Uber’s continued operation would cause irreparable harm.

Herndon said Uber’s continued operation doesn’t pose a threat to public safety, and the company should be allowed to continue operating until the next court hearing.

Herndon didn’t make any ruling on the legality of Uber’s business model, saying “there are very good arguments to be made on both sides.”

He said this might be a case where technology is moving faster than the law and hinted action might be needed from the Legislature to update Nevada’s statutes.

What’s next

A hearing for a preliminary injunction against Uber was set for 10 a.m. Nov. 14. During that hearing, attorneys will present more evidence and likely call witnesses.

Until then, Uber can continue operating in Las Vegas, but its drivers can still be cited by regulators from the taxicab authority.

The authority cited and impounded vehicles of 15 Uber drivers in Nevada over the weekend.

Uber is not allowed to operate in Washoe County because of the temporary restraining order issued by a judge there Tuesday.

A hearing is scheduled for next week in a separate lawsuit filed against Uber by two taxi companies. It’s possible the judge could combine that case with the complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Office.

So in Charlotte it was kind of a crappy day weather wise. Cold and rainy to start then cold and windy. Kind of hurt the going out a bit which I think kept business down. But I still grossed over 100 in about 6.5 hrs. Even got some older folks from NYC who insisted on handing me a cash tip after I got them to the wedding they were going to with 7 minutes to spare. If they had taken a cab it would have cost them some serious coin as I actually had to go to South Carolina with them. Cab would have tacked on a big fee for crossing the state line. As it was their fare was less than 20.00. Had several longer rides last night.

I am a little miffed though. My rating has dropped to 4.9 and I am not sure why. I know that means someone didn't rate me a 5 but I don't know if they had a legit complaint or are just one of those people.

Riders think a 4 star rating is perfectly fine. I'm down to 4.91 in Lyft and 4.84 in Uber after about 50 rides on each platform.

Had my first 3 Uber experiences this weekend in Baltimore. Uber isn't in Buffalo and Lyft was here for about 2 months until the city shut them down and they "suspended operations" before I ever rode with them.

All 3 drivers were courteous and friendly. The cars were clean, and the drivers drove normally / not like the reckless cab rides I'm used to. The guy who dropped us off at the airport this morning even helped load and unload our bags into his trunk for the ride. We never waited more than 8 minutes for a pickup and the rides were cheap.

Big fan

Yeah I am thinking that's what it is. I haven't had one thing even close to a complaint while driving someone, everyone has seemed pretty happy.

Don't fret the non 5 star ratings. Some people just don't give fives. Some mistakenly enter the wrong number of stars (I have done that on a rider rating). As long as you stay in the Upper 4's you are doing great. I am at a 4.78 with probably about 200 trips.

Yeah I try to be real careful on the rider rating because sometimes the app freezes and changes the number.

I heard on the radio some chick had a $300 Uber ride in LA. It was for Halloween, so it was like 4.5x surcharge and she cried because she then wouldn't be able to pay rent. She went on Gofundme and raised $600 to pay for it. Here is the article. I'm not sure who's more dumb, her, or the people that actually gave her money?

yep. I was right, she is hot. That usually explains it

She had to accept the surcharge before she got the ride. And if it was at 4.5 then her original ride was going to be 80 or so do dollars. That isn't a twenty minute ride. I took someone 30 miles and their bill was 35.00. As far as I can tell base fares are the same across the country but I could be wrong on that.

I agree. I think she's a complete moron and do not feel sorry for her at all. Also, I think people have forgotten simple math and multiplication.

Uber is VERY clear about what the multiplier is.... if you somehow miss that you're a moron.
Exactly. And she also conveniently cropped out what type of vehicle she ordered.

ETA: Article updated. Uber says she ordered an Uber Black. Dumb ##### and idiots that sent her money.

Well at least that makes the base fare being so high make sense.
So thats $40-$50 to go 20 miles? Thats not bad.

ETA: I'm in LA so 20 miles is a lot.

Considering it was the equivalent of a Mercedes S class vehicle not so bad.

Will these sitess give an accurate rate without having to sign up?

Toyed with the idea of getting a cab to take my mom home or pick her up but figured it would be over $60+

She is 35 miles away, was curious what these sites would charge

Both Uber and Lyft have fare calculators on their websites.

Michivan in Detroit area... I love it and it saves me not only $$ but tons of mileage on my vehicle (Truck).

Agreed. Maybe if you're having trouble paying your ####### rent, maybe you shouldn't go out on Halloween and get drunk.

But what do I know.

Huge fan of Uber and here's why:

1. I travel a lot, it's a lot easier to go to one app and call a cab rather than trying to find the local taxi company only to find out they can't pick up in certain areas.

2. Receipts are much easier to get as they email you one automatically since the app is tied to my email

3. I can tie the app to my business credit card or personal, there have been a LOT of times where I'm catching a cab but they don't take credit cards so I have to use cash (and they don't have anything that looks like a legit receipt). Usually they would just give me a business card with a handwritten amount on the back. I've never had a problem getting that reimbursed but it just seems so low-rent.

So far this year, NY, DC, NOVA, ATL, CHI, TB, MIA and a few outer areas from these cities. The Ubers are always less than 10 mins.

I'm not sure if this model works in lower populated areas but it's great for popping in and out of major cities.

New Orleans still SUCKS for Uber. Pretty much zero drivers... even during peak times. :hot:

Do you think that is due to the Taxi industry there? I could see New Orleans politics and "that's the way we do things" getting in the way of a new player coming into the industry in that city

Was in Miami this weekend, not a good town for taxis.

Taxi from Hotel near South Beach to Sun Life Stadium: $60.00

Uber back to hotel from stadium: $28.00

Watched a cab - which there hardly any of - drive past numerous people asking where they were going trying to get the biggest fare.

Was in town a month ago and the only uber legally allowed to run were Black Car and SUV limos, as they are already licensed drivers.

Meanwhile, this trip, I had dinner reservations with coworkers and even with an hour of advance notice I couldn't even get a cab to come pick me up at my hotel by the airport...so missed a business dinner at Emeril's NOLA. Original cab no-call no-showed and then calling 3 other companies all said they wouldn't come get me.

#### cabs.

I didn't realize NYC had uber. just figured the mob controlled the taxis and wouldn't allow it. this makes my upcoming NYC trip even better.

Never had an issue in Miami but I avoid South Beach so maybe that's the difference (I've done the SB thing, a few times was enough). I'm usually somewhere between the airport and Coral Gables. Occasionally, I'll catch a Heat game if they're playing while I'm there but that's about it.

How's everyone's uber experiences been lately? It has been working well in Houston and as a driver, the Annual Rodeo that goes on in March is doing great things for demand in the city.

Was fine when I used it in Va/DC in Feb. Less than $40 round trip, about 8 miles from/to Va/DC.

How is driving for Uber? Like it and recommend it to others?

Ha, I didn't realize you drove Uber. If I remember correctly you're in my neck of the woods too, you'll probably pick me up sometime....

I enjoy it and would definitely recommend it as a side job. The flexibility is awesome, you drive whenever you want to. Houston is really using it a lot, so on weekend nights and during morning and afternoon rush hours, you can make pretty decent money.

I haven't used uber before but had someone in new York register their credit card to my email this weekend for a short trip in Brooklyn. does uber store the persons credit card on the account?

not sure how someone could make this mistake knowing I could change the password and use the mobile app to get free rides? im assuming that's how it works

Yes, generally speaking they do store the number.
