To you guys that are currently doing this already: Do you prefer to chauffeur people around or would you choose to deliver items (postmates, delivery.com, bitesquad, etc) for slightly less pay?
With Uber you provide them with your insurance card so they know you have insurance. You are then covered under their commercial policy when you pick up riders. Thanks for the answers.
How about car insurance?
Do you have to report it to your insurance provider? Are you covered under theirs?

Would your insurance go up at all if they know you are using your vehicle for business?
Just out of curiosity do you have to provide workers comp. insurance for yourself? I ask this because I run my own construction business and anyone who I use as a 1099 subcontractor has to provide workers comp. If they didn't and got hurt I ( or my wc policy) would be on the hook for their medical bills.I don't know about applying for black as I just applied for UberX. They pay Every Thursday based on the previous Monday to Monday. Yes, you are a 1099 worker, so you are responsible for your own taxes.I kind of want to do this just because it seems like it could be fun. I drive a Mercedes 550....Is it any harder getting approved from the Black program? I know my buddies and i use this one quite a bit. I would do this as more of a social experience than for the money....hmmm.. Also how does the pay and taxes work? Are you a 1099 employee?

Also every year when I get my insurance audit if I have a 1099 sub without w.c. ( which I don't) they automatically charge me the w.c. premium on them.
I know this is more of an insurance question and I don't mean to hijack the thread but this whole w.c./1099 scenario has so many grey areas where one business is required to carry it and others are not.
I like uber. 95% positive. Birmingham getting it tooWhat are your thoughts? I live in Houston and it has been here for several months, but has not been licensed with the City yet. They seem to be getting great feedback from people who use them.
I know Uber/Lyft do big business in Austin. Outsider is smart.Went to a city of Austin mayoral debate yesterday where uber/lyft are becoming campaign issues. Current councilmembers are against it while the guy running for mayor as an outsider is a big advocate.
As an Uber driver, I have heard nothing about this. Obviously, I will keep monitoring this to see if I want to keep driving for Uber.
Lyft was going commission free for a while (meaning Lyft took nothing for your rides), but recently instituted a 20% commission that you can literally drive yourself out of (Lyft takes less the more you drive). As an Uber driver, I have heard nothing about this. Obviously, I will keep monitoring this to see if I want to keep driving for Uber.
I have seen two things that I was not happy about:
-Uber cut rates in June for its riders by 25% to get more riders. They did not cut the driver's compensation, so Uber was basically eating that rate cut. Then once ridesharing was approved in Houston in July, Uber cut the driver's compensation
by the 25% to match the riders cut. Their explanation was that we would get more riders overall so that would make up for the rate cut.
-Last week, they announced a $10 per week rental fee for the iphone that they give drivers to use. They must have gotten a lot of flack on this one as they just emailed us today saying we could have the driver app put on our own phone, turn in the phone they gave us, and not have to pay the weekly fee.
Obviously, Uber is a very aggressive Company in an extremely competitive industry. While I think they have to be aggressive to survive, there is a line I don't think they should cross ethically.
Interesting. This is a service I would use. Let me go online and order and have Uber deliver to me. I like it.
I don't know about the premium.Über all the time... Great service, but you're def paying a premium.
Just like you rate the drivers on Uber, they rate the passengers. The driver knows how reliable you are before accepting the ride.
Congrats on the good start. Working a weekend night, there definitely is a tension between wanting to get one more ride and wanting to go home and get to sleep. I have been up until 4 AM because I waited for one more ride and it took me away from my house.
Yeah, I know the feeling. Saturday was more "I want to take another ride, but man my bed would feel good right about now". Since I'm a 9-5 type during the week, my body isn't quite adjusted to staying up too long after midnight.Congrats on the good start. Were you at Celtic Crossing? I thought I might have spotted you while picking up a ride.Funny story, at a bar with the GF and another couple on Saturday night watching football. Another buddy of mine happens to be there and he posts up at our table for a bit. At some point he disappears.
We somehow end up on the topic about Lyft and Uber and I'm raving about the product. I get him to sign up under my referral code (2 free rides for me, two free rides for him), and tell him to have her sign up under his code so they get 4 more rides between the two of them. Woot. Everyone's excited.
About 5 mins later my other buddy shows back up and hears that we're talking about social ridesharing. Turns out he's on the clock for Lyft right now, and that's why he disappeared for a bit (picked up a ride). He shows us the app, explains that he loves it, etc.
Small world.
Gotcha. Actually made a trip a little south of you on Kirby dropping off a couple that was partying in Midtown.Nope was at TJ Mulligans out East (Kirby/Poplar). DIdn't get out to the midtown/downtown area this weekend.
Probably 20%-30% less. What does an Uber or Lyft ride cost compared to a cab? A little less? Half?
You say in your blog that you will ride for lyft one night, and Uber another. Wouldn't it be more profitable to have them both on at the same time so you potentially get more rides?
A good and tempting thought, but what if I get requests at the same time? Even though we have some jurisdiction over who we pickup, it's good to keep a high acceptance rate, right? By flip flopping nights, I can better compare the two.You say in your blog that you will ride for lyft one night, and Uber another. When you accept one, go offline on the other so you don't get simultaneous requests.A good and tempting thought, but what if I get requests at the same time? Yeah, will likely go Uber-Lyft on one Friday night-Saturday night then Lyft-Uber the following week. I'll give the experiment about a month probably and decide after that. When you accept one, go offline on the other so you don't get simultaneous requests.A good and tempting thought, but what if I get requests at the same time? I do see the value at seeing which Company is getting more requests on a given night but make sure you compare on similar nights (same night of the week, same type of events going on)
Yes, $10 per week. However, about 2 days after they implemented this, they gave drivers the option to turn in their uber phones, and have the driver app loaded onto their personal phones, and not pay the fee. I will be doing this in a couple weeks when I get my family's phones upgraded and situated. You have to have a Iphone 4S or higher to load the driver app (I currently have an Iphone 4)Uber phone will be in my possession on Tuesday, per FedEx tracking.![]()
dhockster, I read that they're starting to charge Uber drivers a fee to have their phone. Have you been charged yet?
