Anybody use Uber or Lyft ridesharing? (2 Viewers)

Practice ride with a "Lyft Guide" tomorrow. I'm out of town this weekend, so if I make the grade, I start next Saturday night (guests in town next Friday night).

Good luck. I am in the process of getting all my info into Uber.
You too. If this works out, it's ingenious. Get in good with some of the bars and restaurants in your territory so they can refer people to you (or at the very least the Lyft app).

icon> If you ever get into this, just stay off of my "turf" (Overton Square/Cooper-Young). :gang1:
I have been told it takes about 2 weeks for Uber to process everything but I am not sure if it will. They seem to really be in need of drivers. I already have an email conversation going with the local community manager.
I get that impression from Lyft as well.

I was approved in about a week in Houston.

Yeah I am hoping for something in that range.

Funny story from last weekend:

I pick up this early 20's attractive female from the Midtown club area in Houston about 1:30. She is slightly intoxicated and somewhat chatty. She says she is a year out of college and is complaining about how hard it is

to work during the week and to go out and party on the weekends. It was much easier for her in college when she could sleep in during the week. I ask her what she does and she says she is in recruiting for Oil and Gas Companies.

She then ask me what I do during the week and I tell her I am the Business Office Manager at a Catholic School in Houston. She says "GTFO!, I graduated from there!". She then proceeds to ask me if I know the Headmistress. I say

I do, and she tells me that's her Aunt. Great. Now I have to worry about her telling my boss I am moonlighting. I doubt that she will say anything as she may not want her Aunt, the Catholic Nun, to know she was out drinking and clubbing

at 1:30 AM.

So future uber/lyft drivers beware: you will probably run into people you know.

And no, she didn't invite me into her apartment.

I try to do at least one weekend night a week. Generally I have found that it doesn't start to get really busy until 10 ish. I will then drive until about 3. I am trying to scout out different areas before 10 to

see where is the best areas to catch people going out to clubs. Uber also says rush hours are good times to drive, but I really haven't done that because of my day job.

Uber does a good job of emailing you about what events are coming up and where and when they might need a lot of drivers. For instance, when Beyonce played a couple of weeks ago, I picked up

a fare at 3x's the normal rate when the concert let out. That's how you can really enhance what you make.

Yeah, I heard that about Uber and I also hear they pay better than Lyft. But, they're also more persnickity about the kind of car you drive, I guess.

Lyft is all about the "community" aspect of their customer service, so hopefully they do the same. That's a good question to ask my guide tomorrow.

Another thing I noticed: I just checked the Lyft app and there is no Lyft drivers within 7 minutes of me from my work place and I leave in 10 minutes. Maybe I pick up a Lyft ride on my way home?

Loving the possibilities here.

I have done that a few times. Quick $10 - $20.

Just how particular are they when it comes to your car condition? I gave my SUV a real nice cleaning yesterday, but I forgot about the two cracks on my windshield because I've driven enough to forget about them. Dealbreaker?

Windshield is usually $100 with insurance... depending on style.

I've had these since I got them in the North Dakota oil patch. I have gotten so used to them, I don't even notice them anymore. But, one goes halfway across the windshield and the other goes up the right side.

Ugh...

I know Lyft is a little less picky but with cab companies on their rears severely cracked windshields may be a problem.

Anyway you can get someone to come out and do it for you before the Lyft deal?

Nah, drive it at 10 AM and I'm doing it on my work break.

If she brings it up, I'll tell her I'll get it replaced by the time Lyft approves me.

That makes sense. Hopefully it won't be any problem on the test ride.

Update: APPROVED to drive with Lyft (pending background check).

She never brought up the windshield, but I'll have Safelite replace it anyway next week. She also said that my car was mostly clean "but could use a detailing". Her husband does that on the side, so I'll probably throw some business his way. Lady was super nice and super thorough with outlining how things work.

She also said that, even though she lives in Mississippi, she primarily hits the Midtown area where I live and said that area is "RIPE" for fares. She says I'd make money there any time of day, but she also said "the night time is definitely the right time!"

Uber story from last weekend:

Saturday night, pick up a young couple at a club at about 1:30 AM. Both are intoxicated, girl probably more so. On the way to their house, both decide they need some Taco Bell. I go to one on the way and there is a long line at the drive-thru. As we are waiting, girl decides she wants to get a little affectionate and hops on the guys lap facing him. I am looking at her back in my rearview window and at one point I can tell she lifted up the front of her shirt for him. before things went too far, she hopped off of him. The line at Taco Bell wasn't moving at all so we ended up going to Taco Cabana. The couple was very happy with my accomodating them that they tipped me $20 bucks. The fare was $22 and I got a little show for my time. Uber driving is fun!

Nice!

BTW, I withdrew my application for Lyft. I have not been in Tennessee for more than a year and, despite the fact that they can't deduce that I've driven for more than a year as a 29 year old, they harassed me all weekend to get a previous state's driving record. Two problems:

1. I was on vacation all weekend and didn't have access to a computer

2. North Dakota doesn't give the date my license was issued on their online system and Missouri and Illinois still use snail mail.

Plus, I really feel it's a #### move to make me do the legwork on that.

Meanwhile, it turns out Uber doesn't have anything against mid 2000 Saturns, it's just their system is wonky. So I'm giving them a shot.

I have been very happy with Uber in Houston. Hopefully, you will have a similar experience in Tennessee

I don't really fault Lyft for having you provide a driving record for the previous year.
It's not even for their record, it's just to show that I've been driving for more than a year. Stupid.
 These companies are catching a lot of heat from local cabbies looking for any angle they can. IMO showing you've been driving for more than a year is not a bad requirement. LOTS of people in major cities don't own cars and don't drive at all. Assuming someone has been successfully driving for a year just based on age is a mistake, IMO.

I know you feel put out by having to do some legwork, but looking at this like a normal job application, it's not that big a deal. I'm glad they have that check in place.

I guess my biggest frustration with it is getting hounded all weekend over it and having to deal with the frustrating process of getting said records when you live far away.

I've done delivery driving before and I never had to go through this.

Yeah that is probably all about the cab companies looking to get them tossed from places.

I took Uber this weekend, best experience yet. Was finishing dinner, hit in the destination to get a fair quote, and confirmed the reservation. Guy was at my house within 4 minutes. Not approximately 10 minutes and I'm trying to emphasize that it was quick, a literal 4 minutes. The driver told me they updated the Uber software where if you put in the destination for a fare quote, it not only sends it to the driver, but gives the driver the directions so you can know the driver isn't messing around driving in circles to drive the fair up.

Got out after customary no-money exchange, receipt was in my email before I sat down at the train station.

Ensuring the safety of the pizza on the seat next to you and ensuring the safety of the people in your backseat isn't exactly the same thing.

They are constantly updating the driver software. When I started, the driver could see where the fare request was on the map but had to figure out the best way to get there. Now the software shows you a recommended route to get to your fare. It has helped me immensely especially in areas I am not familiar with.

Thanks guys, for all your feedback. I have actually been driving for Uber for about a month and have really enjoyed it. I work during the week and have a family so right now I am just driving about one weekend night a week. To the person

who said Uber drivers are working for minimum wage, I have been averaging about $15-$20 per hour. Uber also helps during busy times by offering minimun hourly rates. If your fares during those time don't equal the minimum hourly rate they bump your pay up, to match the minimum rate. Since I am driving either Friday or Saturday night I am picking up mostly people in their 20's going to and from clubs. They seem to love Uber and a couple have said that they use Uber because they have gotten DWI's and don't want to go through that again. Others have said they are using Uber where they would not have used a cab because Uber is much more reliable. So I think the ridesharing is helping public safety by getting more people who drink on weekends to not drive.

I left out the fact that I drive for Uber from my original post because I wanted an unbiased opinion on what people think of them. I was not trying to be shady.
I've used it in both Houston and Austin and love it. Its just awesome and so convenient.

Have you gotten a ticket yet (for not being licensed)? If you do, does Uber pay for that?
I have not gotten a ticket yet, and Uber says they have gotten all tickets thrown out in court. If it wasn't thrown out they said they would pay for it.

Ridesharing is the new gateway drug... first it starts with making a couple hundred bucks giving drunk folks rides home from the bar... next thing you know you're running RPG's for the russians.

Taxi's are so bad that they had to change the name of their app to get people to use it.

The taxi-summoning phone app Taxi Magic is getting a face-lift that includes expanded services, a new CEO and a trendier, four-letter name: Curb.

The rebranding, set to launch today, is the latest salvo in the battle between a beleaguered taxi industry and ride-sharing phone apps such as Uber, Lyft and Sidecar.

Taxi Magic, which launched in 2009, has not been able to compete on price with ride-share companies that connect passengers with drivers who aren’t commercially licensed and have limited commercial insurance.

Taxi Magic’s parent company, RideCharge, Inc., has been “satisfied with the old application but not happy,” said new Curb CEO Pat Lashinksy, who starts with the company this month.

Only 12 percent of customers use Taxi Magic to call a taxi, while nearly half call a dispatch service and about a quarter hail from the street. Lashinsky said the company expects the number of app-summoned fares to jump to 20 percent within the next year due to changing habits.

Curb users will be able to order a range of car services, from taxis to black car limousines. Taxi Magic was limited to taxis only, Lashinksy said, because some states regulate the use of the term “taxi” in product names.

Uber offers licensed and fully insured black car and SUV services in addition to its cheaper ride-share service, UberX.

Curb’s prices will still be higher than Uber and Lyft, which can afford to charge less than taxis because they do not pay employees to meet and train new drivers. Additionally, Uber and Lyft are not held to the same regulatory standards because they are legally classified as “transportation network companies,” or TNCs, not a taxi service.

TNCs tend to be significantly cheaper than taxis, but their prices do rise when demand is high.

“The other competitor that’s got the U-R-B in the initials will say, ‘We’ve got this low price!’ ” Lashinksy said. “That’s like a restaurant that has a blue-hair special dinner that’s $20, but from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. it’s only $10. But who wants to go to dinner from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.?”

Ordering a taxi through Curb will get customers the same price as hailing one on the street. But there are some advantages to ordering on a smartphone. Curb allows patrons to see how far away a taxi is after they’ve requested a ride, just like with TNCs.

The app also allows taxi owners to know where their drivers are. This is a big advantage, since part of the reason that taxis sometimes take so long to arrive is that drivers will stop to pick up an extra fare even though they are on their way to pick up a fare that was called in through a dispatch center, Lashinksy said.

This kind of behavior is “a very short-term decision” that’s “bad for everyone,” he said, because it gives taxis a bad name.

One big difference between Taxi Magic and Curb is that drivers who stop for an extra fare on their way to pick up another passenger will be blocked from the app for five hours.

Lashinksy said that drivers are much more willing to innovate these days.

“The competitive environment has changed,” Lashinksy said. “Previously, the industry was maybe resistant to having to do new things and now it’s definitely more open, particularly in L.A.”

That is hilarious. I don't see them being very competitive.

From my initiation with Lyft:

1. You have to look nice and presentable

2. Yes, work when you want

3. Not that I know of outside of making sure your car is detailed, has no dings, cracked windshield, etc

4. Not 100% sure. I don't have any, but they're sticklers for making sure you have at least a year's worth of driving history.

***HIJACK*** BTW, on that last note, I did find an old driver's license last night when I was rummaging around. That combined with my current license will give me the year of driving I need. That'll be handy if it becomes an issue with Uber. I did cut things off amicably with Lyft and was told I can go back to them if I want. It sounds like Uber pays better and I won't have to have a pink mustache on my car lol. ***END OF HIJACK***

-Uber suggests you look professional, but you are allowed to wear whatever you want.

-Definitely make your own hours. When you want to work, go online in the driver app. When you don't go offline.

-No costs to becoming a driver

-I don't know how lenient they are on driving records. Mine was clean so I did not have to worry about it.

The great thing about driving for Uber so far is they pretty much leave it up to you to try and be as successful as you want. They encourage you to be as customer service oriented as you can be. This includes offering riders water, use of cellphone charge, etc. One driver, I was told, was giving out blowpop lollipops to his riders. I am open to any thoughts on what would be something good/useful to offer to riders.

I kind of want to do this just because it seems like it could be fun. I drive a Mercedes 550....Is it any harder getting approved from the Black program? I know my buddies and i use this one quite a bit. I would do this as more of a social experience than for the money....hmmm.. Also how does the pay and taxes work? Are you a 1099 employee?

I am open to any thoughts on what would be something good/useful to offer to riders.
Love the free-water and cellphone charger offerings. Maybe offer gum instead of candy? Especially if its a weekend a guy might be on a date and have some beer breath.

I don't know about applying for black as I just applied for UberX. They pay Every Thursday based on the previous Monday to Monday. Yes, you are a 1099 worker, so you are responsible for your own taxes.

I took one last week that had a cooler full of Miller Highlife beers....Guy let us get as many as we wanted. It worked because we called him to come and get us.

That's awesome. I have yet to see one offer us beer, but most are cool and will let us bring a "roadie."
