Anyone have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3? (1 Viewer)

I just went to best buy to look at the phone. I don't know, didnt blow me away. Maybe I'm just past the new tech stuff in my life. My iPhone 4 with ios6 still works for me.
Do not upgrade to iOS 7 on the 4. Slow and terrible.

This phone has my curiosity peaked though.
I hope MS keeps plugging away. I really like the look/feel of the OS, and the hardware looks pretty sweet too - I love my HTC 8x, yet I've got some serious envy brewing for these Nokia devices.

Now if only Redmond could put some effort into freakin' apps (hopefully this was strongly suggested in meetings where it was decided to spend $7 billion on Nokia).

The guy I shared a limo with on this trip had a note and I will admit it looked pretty sweet. I've had android before (evo) but I'm big time apple/Mac. But I'm "interested" which is a step shy of "tempted".

Just wish it wasn't plastic. Really? Flagship devices that are plastic? Can't do it.

With a hard case around it, I cant tell what my phone is made of. Couldnt care less if it was plastic, metal, glass or wood.

Gripes as I figure this out:

-how do I get to the top of a page in Chrome? I think in the iPhone version I could just tap the top of the screen and it would auto scroll all the way to the top. No way I enable that here?

-messaging is screwy. I'm not getting a bunch of texts from my wife. I get them on my work iPhone still because apparently they are imessage and I had my two iPhone linked together (I would get the same messages on both iPhone previously). So my wife can't text me. This is where the apple brand shows its strengths - - everything usually just works. I'm sure we'll figure it out, strange thing is she gets my texts, I just don't get hers.

- as with any new device the typing will take getting used to. I got the highest rated keyboard app which supposedly is best and it's at least an improvement on the stock one. This will just take some time.

- it Is big. And you feel the difference in your hand when manipulating things especially holding it one handed. My hand muscles were plain tired by bedtime. Again I think that will just take time. I don't mind the size in terms of carrying it, and the screen is oh so worth it.

More to come.
You can quickly shrink the size of the screen just by using your thumb then you can easily navigate using one hand and switch back to full screen when you finish.

This was my thought exactly. Anyone with a brain is going to put a plastic case around it anyway. Worrying about the look of your phone is ridiculous IMO.

I don't like cases at all.
I agree with you, don't like cases at all either.

If you don't like the plastic feel of the Galaxy but still want the big screen have you tried out the HTC One Max? My gf has an HTC One and it has a very premium feel imo. The Max is supposed to be identical with the only difference being the screen size.

I'll be very interested to see what the battery life is in real life tests. You can't beat Nokia cameras as far as phone cameras go.

I had been waiting for a price break on a LG G2 but the Lumia 1520 is certainly in the running.
Phone is $100 if you order from ATT online. I'm not sure if that is because the phone sucks or if they want many of them sold or what. That is a mini tablet for $100. :wow:

Stay with the iPhone and buy a 5S for $100 or go with the Nokia and spend $100?

I guess I could simply buy the new iPhone next year if I am not satisfied with the Nokia this time around, huh?

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to check it out.

I'm not sure what iPhone you currently have but I certainly wouldn't switch from the 5 to either the 5s or 5c. If real world battery life is the ~25 hours as advertised I'd be tempted to make the switch. Unfortunately ATT is not one of the better networks for me localy. I'm intrigued by the hardware however. Probably will wait for to hear some real user reviews and hope that it becomes available on another network. Let us know how you like it(especially the battery life and quality of the camera) if you do pull the trigger on the Nokia.

I have the iPhone 4.

Well, I love the design of the iphone5... but the battery life is the killer for me. I use wifi, bluetooth, and gps often throughout the day. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread their disappointment that a flagship phone would be made of plastic but that sin pales in comparison to ~8hr battery life. That seems absurd to me. I don't understand all these people that suggest buying phones with great displays only to turn them down and set them shut off all the time which is the height of annoying. At this point so many devices have great screens, processors that are plenty fast, etc. The real differentiating features for me are battery life, expandable memory and camera. Based on specs it seems like the Lumia 1520 is close to the top in both categories... but unfortunately for me I live in an area where TMobile offers a much stronger signal than ATT.

It doesn't sound like I use my phone in a similar way as you. I lock my phone up for most of the day during the week (due to being in school and don't want it getting stolen) so I rarely have an issue with battery. Have an issue on the weekends sometimes but nothing overly worrying. I'm more curious what "more" I can do with a phone that is not what I currently have.

I'm in the process of switching/ordering and the "downside" of doing so right now (if I even went with a 5S) is that this phone may very well be a one year rental. If the bigger iPhone is great and the thing to get... then I switch back. If it does not live up to the hype especially if battery is not as good... then I keep the Windows phone. Lets see what the other side has to offer. No way I get rid of my MacBook Pro though.

Edit:

Ordered the yellow one. Talked with ATT chat and was able to get the $36 upgrade fee waived. So, spent $105 for a phone today. Spent $200+ on my iPhone 4 a couple years ago. Seems odd to say that. But, just wait and see now. Have to activate it from home (never did that) and it ships on the 19th (it better due to availability and such). Other places sell it for $200 with some rebates but you can't beat $100 since those rebates did not equal the other $100. ATT chat was real nice. Smooth sailing so far. Not sure about any time of case or anything yet either... if needed even.

They have no choice. The iphone looks like a kids toy now. They don't need to go as big as the Note 3, but they definitely have to get bigger.

what do you use expandable memory for?
Memory is just so cheap, 32gb for under $20.

phone: audio podcasts(LOTS OF THEM), music collection, photos

tablet: video podcasts, music collection, movies

Maybe it's because there are so many dead spots near where I live, or my hardware isn't exactly bleeding edge but everything plays so much better for me if it's on my storage and I'm not streaming any of it. It's not even close. Why not just download it on WiFi at the highest bit rate possible and really enjoy better quality? Seems silly to use data on the cell network when memory is so cheap.

ETA: There are also plenty of apps I only use occasionally that I run from the memory card.

Oats, you have had it a couple of days already. What are your thoughts. Game changer or just another phone

It's not a "game changer." It's just a smartphone, and I use it for all the same things I used my iPhone for.

That said, I like this phone a lot more than my iPhone 5.

1. It took me a few days to work through the kinks (like to get my messaging working -- thanks Apple), but I got it working again. Similarly, I am getting more used to the operating system, and I'm getting used to typing on it, holding it, etc. The more I use it and become comfortable with it, the more I like it.

2. The big screen is fantastic. I was watching NFL Mobile in my car on Sunday while waiting on someone. Totally awesome. Screen is also great for browsing the web, looking at photos, Youtube, etc., along with my Netflix app (we signed up recently after we bought a Chromecast -- what a great service, and made better on this big screen).

3. Swype is so awesome. I'm still getting better at it, but once you start to get it down, holy crap is this fast. By far the fastest means of text entry I've ever seen absent a full scale desktop keyboard. (And probably gives that a run for the money for many people). I was a skeptic before, now I get it.

4. Battery life has been solid. No problems, and I run the screen bright and use it a lot.

5. Despite people in here warning me that I should reboot my android device a couple times a day, I have only restarted it once since I got it last week. And I didn't _need_ to, but memory was starting to fill up more regularly and so I figured why not. The memory clean app that was recommended in here is great -- it pops up in my notifications when memory starts to get close to full, and I just swipe that and press a button and it insta-cleans it. Pretty cool.

6. Notifications is great. Such a better system than on iPhone. I swipe down and everything that matters is accessible with one touch

7. Photos. I like the auto backup to Google Plus. It's a perfect place to keep my photos safely and privately. The whole Google ecosystem is just better across the board than Apple's offerings. Oh and the other day my wife got hit with some notification from iCloud that she's maxing out (she takes LOTS of pics of our daughter) and asking if she wants to upgrade for more money to the next level. I'm loading everything for free on Google Plus (far as I know?), automatically.

8. The Google Play store is better than the Apple store too. Really like the interface, it's fast, works well, and I've found an android equivalent for every app I used to use on my iPhone, no problem.

9. Again, Spotify was important in making this move. I could imagine this being a nightmare without having already been a Spotify guy, as porting over music sounds like a real PIA. This made it easy.

10. Similarly, being on Gmail, Google Calendar with my wife, etc., make the switch very simple.

I'm still toying with it, customizing it, etc., but on the whole I REALLY like this phone. The best phone I've owned. I'm also starting to like the Android OS a whole lot more than iOS. And as for size, when I hold my iPhone now, it really does feel so tiny. It's fine for doing my work e-mail, but I'll not be picking that device up for any other reason.

Now that the growing pains are passing, big thumbs up so far. I'm feeling good about being off the Apple ecosystem. It was king during its time, and they were incredible innovators, but I think they may be on the way out, unless they REALLY wow someone with the next iPhone. At with the way things have gone there in recent years, I have a feeling it will just be another marginal improvement, and Samsung and others will have better offerings. We'll see.

Thanks. I appreciate the time it took to write that

Everything about this phone screams that it is perfect for me. Yet, I stay with the iphone and am really unsure why at this point.

There is unlimited hi-res storage, and a 25GB limit on full res. Once you hit the 25GB limit, you can buy more storage.

That being said, you'll be fine with the unlimited hi-res, just grab a wire every now and then, and back the full-res images up to an HDD.

You could also just keep getting new google accounts. I have 1 that is completely maxed out on storage. I still access stuff on drive and search old emails on this gmail account, and they do not delete anything. I have like 60gb cloud storage that I paid a 1 time fee for. ( I paid for more storage, but never re-up'd).

Sure. Feel free to fire away with questions, I'll do what I can do answer.

Why doesn't iPhone have swype? Or does it?
Who needs to swipe when there is Siri?

A lot of android keyboards have the swype feature. Check out the Google keyboard. Its free, and the suggested words are pretty accurate in their predictions and fixes.

Besides the big screen and the OK battery life, all of your responses were about Android and not the Note specifically. Just pointing that out, cause anyone who is interested in the things you said, can get those things from every newer Android device. If you are going to be carrying two devices, wouldn't it make more sense to have a phone and a tablet? Maybe a 7 inch if yuo dont feel like carrying a bigger one around?

This is what I miss most about my old Android phone. The iphone notification system is terrible.

Tablet for my uses is TOO big. Lots of days I like to travel without a bag. The Note size fits right into a perfect slot for my use -- I can toss it in my pocket, but when I take it out it's a much better/bigger screen than my iPhone. Love the size.

You're right that lots of the things I posted were about Android phones. The whole experience is new for me, so I'm just trying to flag that stuff for other folks similarly considering a switch from iPhone.

In terms of Note-specific items, I definitely already mentioned (1) the screen -- which is glorious, but I'll add to that (2) the speed. My iPhone used to get hung up all the time. This thing is fast swiping around from app to app and screen to screen. It just feels more responsive than my iPhone5 did in many respects.

But you're right, on the whole, if you are a guy who will carry a bag with you everywhere, a tablet might work better for you. I still use this as a phone, and I prefer this pocket size to a tablet, but I could see someone finding the tablet more useful for their uses.

One new downside: Righetti sent out an MP4 vid from his iPhone of him in China in a beer chugging contest with one of his customers, and my phone wouldn't play it. Maybe there is an MP4 viewer for Android? I'm just rolling with the stock video player at this point, I have to think there's something better in the google play store...

Oat, I agree about the responsiveness of certain Android phones. I had a Nexus 4 for a couple weeks and dreaded going back to my iPhone 4. I actually hate my iPhone now and am scheming a way to sell it with a broken screen in order to buy a Nexus 4 or 5

Download MX player and/or VLC Player - those two apps should adequately serve all of your media needs.

Noon battery check:

I unplugged both my Galaxy Note 3 and my iPhone5 when I got up this morning. I unplugged the Galaxy at 6am; I unplugged the iPhone5 about 30 minutes later. I used the iPhone5 for some limited work e-mailing. I used the Galaxy for limited personal e-mailing and texting, but also for music during my workout and web browsing and music during my morning commute (I also really like that step counter pedometer app, and have had that on full-time since I bought the phone).

Galaxy has 78% charge remaining as of noon; iPhone has 54% charge remaining.

Turns out I may not need to plug in the Galaxy at my desk to get through the day; may test that out today. The iPhone definitely is getting plugged in now so I can do work e-mail on my commute home, as I'm pretty sure it won't make it at this rate.

6:28pm on my commute home and I'm still at 54% without a charge all day. And that's with a 6am start and normal usage on a workday. Looks like I won't have to charge it during the day after all, pretty refreshing after having to plug both my iPhone5s in all day.

Bigger and bigger fan of this device the longer I have it.

Have you used it with your Mac for managing pictures? Or you just backup to google and don't use the storage on your machine at all anymore?

Nope just Google. My space monkey is being delivered today and I will see how that works. May not need it now.

just to comment you could get a 7 or 8 inch tablet.

i take my nexus everywhere i commute and it is not a burden carrycarry

This thread has the nerd in me considering a Nexus 5. I think I could sell my ip5 and have enough to a nexus 5.
