Anyone have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3? (1 Viewer)

This wireless charging thing is awesome. Still totally don't understand why Apple and Samsung for that matter aren't building this into their phones as sold. It's so awesome. At least with Samsung you can add it -- Apple you need to put a fancy big case on to do it. Anyway, it's a no-brainer. Cool technology.

I've had various iPhones over the years and I'm now to the point where I HATE my phone. I upgraded to iOS7 and my iPhone is slower than hell. I can't deal with it anymore.

I've been looking at that Note 3 since it's release date but didn't pull the trigger because of price at the time...

I think the wife got me one for Christmas and I CANNOT wait to open it...screw you Apple.

You won't be disappointed. I still have an iPhone 5 for work and I loathe using it now.

One of the cool things about Android is all the customizing you can do. Okay around with different launchers and widgets. I like kitkat launcher and the dashclock widget. Great stuff.

Im in same boat and I'll be getting the google nexus 5 here in the next week.Since I'll be ditching the iPhone soon, I've taken the case off it and it's much sleeker without the case and now I wonder why I jumped on the "you have to get a case" bandwagon.

Putting a beautiful device - iphone, etc - in a case is like having Miranda Kerr in your bed and telling her to put some clothes on.

Is Samsung on yearly releases for the Note and Galaxy S phones? I heard the Galaxy S 5 is coming Q1, did the S4 come out a year ago?

That's cool. Easier to predict what device you will be able to get at the end of your 2 year contract.

Have you guys found any issue with this phone impacting your peripheral vision on the side that you're holding it to your head?

Also, is the preferred method of carrying it a pair of cargo pants, messenger bag, or a backpack?

Just trying to get the lay of the land, here.

Fanny pack.

For me, front pocket of my coat or jacket, or a messenger bag. Fits nicely there. If I don't want to wear either of those things, I just use my iphone and fwrd my Note to it.

It fits in all the same pockets where I used to keep my iPhone. Shrug.

Are you going to get a bigger iphone when it comes out? I heard the next one is going to be bigger.

:lmao:

Every iPhone user that has seen my phone says the same thing : "Why would you ever need a phone THAT big?"

Yes. I will get the biggest one they make.

Yes they are. S4 was summer. I think they are speeding it up this time.
I think the S was announced Q1 this year and released in the US in the summer... my guess is the S5 is announced Q1 again next year and released in the US at a later date.

Correct. They announced the S4 early March, released in US early summer. Nice thing about that is if the S5 doesn't knock your socks off just go pick up the Note or Nexus in March.

For anyone concerned about the size of the Note you may want to check out the Nexus 5, it has a 5'' screen and top of the line specs all around. Not available on Verizon though because they are little #####es with their network.

I just picked mine up last night. I really like the size. The screen is amazing and it is very quick. I havent had the chance to play with running multiple apps or the S pen but I look forward to doing so. I did put mine in an Otterbox. I am a klutz and if I dont keep it in there I will do untold damage to it. The Otterbox on my S2 which is what I upgraded from took alot of wear, but my phone was in really good shape.

Otis,

I tried the dashclock widget. Only problem I'm having is this: The text message notification in the dashclock widget works great. However, when your phone is locked, it autodefaults to the standard text notification, which sucks. Searching online, I can't seem to make it default to the dashclock widget for text message notifications on a locked screen.

This is a deal-breaker for me if I can't fix it. Also, I still can't receive group messages despite de-registering my iphone, changing my password, and doing virtually everything I can, short of calling apple.

Re: the Apple issue, the solution is online somewhere. I wish I had saved the link. My wife basically disconnected my iPhones from iTunes for me somehow. I think we had to disconnect from iTunes and iCloud? I forget exactly how we did it. It took a few tries but eventually I found the right link via Google searching which explained what to do. Lots of people in the thread had the same issues and all were claiming it worked for them, and it worked for me. So the group messages thing, which is Apple's fault, is fixable by doing something from your Apple accounts.

re: the notification issue you're talking about, I'm not sure. It hasn't been an issue for me and I keep my phones on silent all the time. But maybe there's something with the widget not working right, can't say.

My wireless charging is set up on my night stand and on my desk at work. I just plop the phone down on it, it's great. Big fan.

I think I've had it with Apple as well. Looked at a Note today and actually laughed at the size. I think I'd be more into the S4. But any thoughts on the LG G2? Looked nice also.

Size matters.

The Note does look ridiculously large at first, but within a week most other smart phones look painfully small.

I bought the 2014 Note 10.1 for my wife for Christmas. I just upgraded her to the s4 so hopefully it will be intuitive for her to go back and forth between the two.

This is true. The thing looks "ridiculous" at first because all you've known is the "standard" smartphone screen. I realize that I have enormous hands, but they're not actually quite as enormous as advertised, and it's a really great device.

For anyone who turns it down on that first reaction alone, I'd say you can't understand how you really feel about it until you live with it for a week or two. I wouldn't go back at this point.

Last one. What were you guys taking about with all the customization. Just moving the apps around where you want them.

Is there an android thread. I am missing two important apps for me and can't seem to find something similar in play store.

Mailbox and groups. As crazy as it sounds, I use those apps so much that if I cant find substitutes, this phone is going back

re: Nokia 1520 Windows Phone

I can add more later but something I have come to realize so far I'll explain below but the phone itself is near perfect. I still have to customize some things and I'm not blaming the OS or the phone for minor things that fall on me to work with.

The thing I have come to realize is the size of a/the phone. This phone is 6.4" long and just over 3" wide. The screen is 6" which is a nice size. But, hear me out, the bezel takes away from the phone. I think the ideal size of a phone, for me, would be in the 5.5 - 6" height with, at max, 3" width. These dimensions work with a bezel in mind. The less the bezel takes up, the better. Here is the kicker that companies have gone away from though... make the phone a little more thick. I don't need a super slim phone. I'm not talking original iPod thickness but a little bit more thick. I had the iPhone 4 and that was nice but the phone I'm thinking could be half a centimeter thicker too. That would be my ideal right now.

Widgets are popular too.
What's a widget? Different than an app?
from what I gather, they are things that give lots of info in one tile. So you can put it on the lock screen and see a ton. I haven't played with that yet. I have to say, there are some really cool things on this phone.

It's hard to get one thick enough these days.

Widgets can be one "tile" (or the size of 1 icon), or they can be larger -- some of the ones I use go across an entire row of icons or multiple rows of icons. Time, weather, alarm, pedometer, spotify controls are just some of the ones I use. The Dashclock widget is great, I set up a single screen with it and it has all of my notifications and status along with time and weather. (Although with Android having such a great notifications system when you pull down, it's not as necessary...)

I downloaded the last app I was missing last night -- I had really become used to Apple's Passbook app and didn't think it was available on Android, but it turns out there are a bunch of apps that are basically Passbook clones and use the same files and everything. Huge plus for the heavy travel seasons...

Last thing I recently discovered and want to learn more about -- do any of you Android guys use Tasker? It seems complex but if you can figure it out and get it down pat, it's an automation system that you can use to automate anything. For instance, shut down all the power hungry items during certain hours automatically (maybe you don't use your phone much while at your desk, so shut down screen brightness, turn off wifi, etc. during that period); or location based items, like shoot a text to my wife when I'm within a mile of the house on weekdays letting her know I'll be home soon, etc. Seems like the possibilities are endless, but I need to find some tutorials online to figure out how to use it, and to figure out what other useful tasks there are.

I bought tasker several years ago due to some recommendations from people on here. I messed with it for a little while, but didn't end up sticking with it. If you have a lot of time to invest customizing the thing, then it might be worth it. I figured it out, but didn't have a huge need for any of the automation features. My wifi turns on automatically, and doesn't burn too much battery, so no need to automate. Back on my HTC 3-4 years ago "wifi on" drained battery, so it was worth it.

There are thousands of mail apps. What is groups? You can set up group list in almost any text or mail app. Google Hangouts lets you do a bunch of this stuff.

thanks. I just found out that you can also use Amazon for apps. Groups basically allows you to email and text anyone you put in a particular group. I coach travel soccer and text and email in seconds. I found something similar on Amazon. Only 6 reviewers but I think I'll try it

The S4 has Groups, so I'd guess the Note 3 may have them as well. In Contacts, there is a Groups Tab. You can edit your contacts to add them to Groups, and then send a message to the Group by long pressing the Group name. May not need an extra app if the Note has the same feature.

I'm reading some reviews and apparently the Note doubles as an excellent TV Dinner stand if you place it in your lap. Plenty of room for plate and silverware, though fitting a beverage on there as well is a bit of a tight fit.

thank you very much. It is exactly what I was looking for. Only issue is that it has a max of 10 contacts you can send it to. I need 18Is there a site you can send me to that will give me pointers like the one you just gave me. I have a feeling things like that would help me big time. Thanks again.

Tried it for 10 days, returned it and got a 5s. Couldn't be happier.

I don't want to spend hours looking for apps that work and integrate well with the rest of the 3rd party crap I've downloaded. I want it to work.

The only thing I'll miss is the screen size and in reality I think the size was a bit too big. The galaxy is the perfect size and when Apple releases one at that size, we will finally have the perfect phone. Until then the 5s will have to do.

Hater
Wha? I suppose you could use a narrower glass, but a standard size glass is just a little too snug with the plate and silverware.

Plus you have to worry about condensation from the glass potentially damaging the device. Just doesn't seem worth it.

The forum linked above is good, as is droidforums.net. I was on staff at a couple of droidforums' affiliate forums, and they've usually got some good info. I'm sure they have a section for the Note 3 over there. Or feel free to ask here and tap into the collective knowledge of the FFA. Other than that, googling and researching what you're trying to do will often give you quite a few options to accomplish what you want.

For the 10 contact limit, you may want to look at Handcent or GoSMS, which are both popular text messaging apps. I believe the 10 contact max is a limitation of the stock messaging app, and either of those should be able to handle group messaging.

it is very different. Looks like you had it long enough to get a good feel. I'm on the fence after one full day. Things I like the most are the screen size, the Swype keyboard, the s pen scrapbook function and the ability to split the screens and text and surf our surf and watch movies.

I don't like the free for all in terms of apps with 3rd party plug ins like you mentioned. Add that to the fact that most I have looked at have mostly negative reviews in the past few weeks. I don't like the camera. Haven't taken a good picture yet and the battery life has been bad. I'm at 26 % after same use as iPhone 4 where I would be above 40%

Thanks again dippa.
