Fished the flats around Anna Maria Island today...the Sheepshead bite was on fire the first couple hours, then the Black Drums went wild. Ended the day with nine keeper Sheeps 13-19 inches, and six keeper Drum 21-24 inches. All caught under residential docks on pieces of fresh shrimp. Also caught maybe 20 short sheeps, a few small Mangrove Snapper, and a few undersized Drum.

Nice. How much did you have to pay that homeless guy to model the fish for ya?
Had a week off, so I relaxed a bit and let myself get scruffy. The fish seemed to love it.

Just seen this.

Nice catch buddy.

Anyone own the 10" humminbird ONIX SI?

Cousin bought one which we are going to use in 3 weeks up in Ontario,Canada to catch some Walleyes.

We are planning to use it to map the depth of the lake his cabin is on and just wondering what results others have had. I've been watching a bunch of youtube videos trying to get a head start on using this monster of a depth finder.

Don't have one, but that trip sounds great. I go fishing in Minnesota in June, then up to Wausau, wi in August for some Muskie fishing.

I don't have the Onix, but I do have Autochart and use it with my humminbird.  That software is pretty awesome for those of us that fish lakes that don't have the fishing pressure to have someone chart the lake and put it on a card for sale.

Does the Onix come standard with an Autochart type software?  Or do you need to buy it separately and use it with the Onix?

I had him buy it so we are set there.. He is a PC novice so it will be up to me at the end of the year to trasfer the data captured to start making maps of the lake.

I've been helping him build this cabin since 2012 and it is basically done so we can start spending the entire trip :fishing: instead of work/fish.

there is a learning curve with the software, but once you get used to it, it is pretty awesome.  just remember to stop recording before you power down the unit (not that anyone couldn't figure that out the first 3 times they used it....  :loco: )

and i would do small portions at a time and make sure it is working.  then you can do larger sections once you are confident it works.

Edit: some of the newer humminbirds create the maps on the fly on the unit.  I would assume the Onix would since it is a higher end unit.  No need for a software to render the maps.

Edit again: it is called autochart live.  check it out here:

 I've been watching many different videos on YouTube , like this one, showing how to use that feature..

Going to be a LOT of time this year "playing" with the depth finder.

If interested, here is a map to where we are headed in less then 3 weeks

It says "Unnamed Road" as the only way to the cabin is a hour long boat ride through a river system.. No Phones, no TV's and Very few other people :)

A week away from the annual trip to Ontario, Canada, Lake of the Woods for walleyes. Trying a new spot this year for this 9-man trip with three boats.

Can't wait! Got into another trip with a few of the same guys for Lake of the Woods in October for walleyes and crappies. Crappies can get huge because LOW is known for its walleyes and muskies. That's sweet because you can bring home more fish.

Tight lines everyone.

Gearing up for my annual Alaska salmon trip. This will be the fourth year in a row. Hoping to come back with 100 lbs of Sockeye.

Sweet. We are two weeks away from our Minnesota trip. My boner is on high alert.

I caught two northern pike today and they started fighting each other in the boat.
All of a sudden they're not so elusive for you.

I have video from a few years ago of a guy in our group who caught a walleye and as he was bringing him in a Northern grabbed it. Landed both. It was cool.

Went for Red Snapper today and slayed em. Ended with 26 of em, as well as a mess of other fish including Gag Grouper, Scamp Grouper, Vermillion Snapper, Amberjack, Wahoo, Spanish Hogfish, Blue Tilefish, Triggerfish, White Snapper, Rabbitfish, Shark...a few others I cant think of right now...not all fish are in the pic, the board wasn't big enough to hang em all. We went to 200+ feet of blue water out of Orange Beach, Alabama.

Nice fish! Charter? They keep and sell the catch or do you get some?

You ever fillet one of those big grouper?

Yeah, charter. My boss booked a trip for the whole company (13 of us). We keep what we catch. And yup I've cleaned lots of good size grouper.

Can anyone recommend a good rod/reel combo (reasonably priced) for surf fishing? Heading down to the gulf in a couple weeks.
Picked up a couple of these to keep in the car at all times for when we head down to the beach. Really awesome quality for the price, love the way they fold up. Stellar reviews on Amazon.  It's sold out at this link but you can probably find them elsewhere

I'll be up there in two weeks.  Nestor Falls area.

Came back from Canada last Friday..

What I've learned from my 2012 opener weekend and this years opener weekend is that it is just not worth it to go so early on that river system.. Both years, covering over 7 of the 20 miles and we've only found one or two spots that produce that early in the season...
And of course of the 20 or so people on the entire river, they all surround those areas... In the other years where we go up the first or second week of June there are many more places producing, so will just delay or trips from here on out.

As I mentioned in my previous posts, my Cousin bought the Humminbird Onix 10 with Down Imaging and Side Imaging.. I had my :nerd: hat on the entire week playing with his new gizmo.

Just trying to figure out the AutoChart program.. Heck, I have spent the past 20+ years in the IT world and even I am having a hard time figuring this thing out..
Any ways, I was able to get some charting done and playing around with the program produced a few 3D images of a Hump we accidentally found a few years back that is not marked on any maps...

Here is the area looking South to North

And looking North to South

Can't wait to get back up there in August to map that area a little better and get some other areas mapped

My 8 year old wants to learn to fish.  As someone that didn't grow up fishing, where do I start?  We have a couple local lakes that are stocked with largemouth bass, Bodie bass (hybrid), crappie, catfish and sunfish.

I'll be buying gear from ****'s or Field & Stream.

I used to fish a lot when I lived in Colorado - mountain streams, lakes full of trout. In Washington, not so much. Need a boat and too cheap to buy one.

Crappie is great pan fish, but nothing beats Walleye.

Never caught a Muskie but I have friends who fish for them.  I'm going to Northern Lake Michigan in a few weeks Lake Trout fishing, never done that before either.  The more I fish, the more I love it.

Buy a couple of Zebco 33 reels and rod combo. Something like this:

http://t.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=33026746#close

Get some smaller hooks, a few bobbers, and some nightcrawlers. Get a small tackle box to hold your gear. Throw in some needle nose pliers in the box to get hooks out in case they swallow it.

And when you take him, he does all the fishing. Leave your rod on the bank until he gets the hang of it.

Oh, and buy a fishing license.

Good info here. Buy a cpl practice plugs for casting practice too if you have a yard big enough for him to use it

I'll do that. There's a big open area near our house.

Anyone who is looking at a new trolling motor needs to check out the MotorGuide. The "anchor" feature is worth its weight in gold and makes fishing in high winds and wavy conditions much more fun.

If you've fished in these conditions before you know how hard it is for the trolling motor operator to concentrate on fishing while they maneuver the troller with the foot pedal or remote and how hard it is for everyone to consistently stay on the bottom in rolling waters.

The MotorGuide does it and is more accurate on its positioning than other brands. It has other features that allow you to move in increments too and hold those positions as you try to find the perfect spots on the edge of reefs, rock piles and structure.

I'll be in Alaska for my fourth annual salmon fishing trip in two weeks. Can't wait! Hoping I bring back > 100 lbs. of sockeye.

Friend of mine had one of these on his boat when I fished with him last month in Minnesota. You are right - worked great.

Heading to central Wisconsin in a couple of weeks to fish the Wisconsin river for muskie, smallmouth, and sturgeon. Can't wait.  :headbang:

I wish I had time to fish & get back into it.  Unfortunately, I am stuck with hobbies like pokemon go these days...

The years pass by quickly. I'm up to two Canada fishing trips per year now and I live on a lake. I wish I could fish more too but I'm happy with what I get in. No regrets. Make time!

I'm sure I will be able to fish more when my boy gets a little older.  Things like fishing, golfing, going to football games, etc. are such a huge time commitment.  I'm the kind of guy who likes to get fully engulfed in something, so when I start fishing again I will transform into Bill Dance.

I've been semi-watching buying a 12-14' aluminum boat with a 2-6hp motor for the kids to take out on their own. I think that would be badass to come home from school or just get up on a summers day, hop in your little boat and take on the world.   :fishing:

So I've been up to my lake house for a week now and have had some decent luck. Three largemouth, lots of Crappie and Bluegill, and a two foot Northern Pike.

Tonight however was frustrating. I had what I think was a pike on the line, got it near the boat, and it broke the line at the swivel and took my Rapada with him.

About 45 minutes later I was just casting some tubes and I get it 5 feet from the boat and a bass nails it, comes out of the water and splashes me, and again my line breaks at the swivel. I'm guessing he's still telling all his buddies about the human he splashed, hopefully he makes me 6'7" with a huge :fro:

Two takeaways:

-I need to learn how to tie a better knot

-glass is half full take is at least I'm learning which bait to use to bring these guys in

Palomar is a super strong go-to knot for tackle termination. Commit it to memory so you have one for sure.

Yeah, my buddy set me up with a 9' #5. The reel has a removable spool, so I have both sinking and floating line.
that is a great set up for starting out. what sorts of species are you going to be targeting and on what kind of water (stream or still, etc..)

Hey Jrock,

I rigged my setups with the palomar knot and had no breaks! Caught four Bass, one of them the biggest I've ever caught on my lake, as well as a giant Blue Gill who took his chances with a Rapada flex for some reason. Good day though, lines held and I found a new go to lure (pumpkin green tubes). :fishing: :banned:

Just skimmed the last page of this thread as I am not a big fisherman, but my brother is.  He got into fly fishing last year so I ordered him a monthly subscription to flys at https://subscribe.postflybox.com. He loved them.  Said great for someone just getting into since you use a lot of lures.  I now see they have it for other types of fishing too, but can't review that since they didn't have those when I ordered this.  Might be fun for someone who likes a monthly box of lures!

Sweet! Good job!  :fishing: :fishy:              :hifive:

Here are a few knot links for PDFs in case anyone's interested. I'm a novice compared to some of my friends so I only use a few and I keep a printout in my bag. Besides knots for various purposes they also have some helpful hints and reminders such as wetting the line with saliva before tightening the knot. Braided line is a whole different beast and can change up things too.

These are really all you need for the most part, with great illustrations and uses, such as the Rapala knot to allow proper lure action.

For tying braided line to mono/flourocarbon (when you need an invisible presentation) this link is good, with video.
