Anyone own a 4K Television (1 Viewer)

Mrs. O shutting me down hard on pulling down the wood over the mantle.  So maybe we'll just be keeping it as is (painting it white with all the rest, so it's not so dark and overbearing), and I'll upgrade to that 48" LG OLED soon as it's available.
Well, this is disappointing.    Have you told your wife that painting all that wood white around a black TV rectangle is going to make the TV stand out even more and basically draw your eye straight to it?     Give it a hail mary attempt.

So... thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these.  Have Directv.

What do I need to know about equipment?

Will I need to upgrade the box (will check model when I get home)?

Are they doing this for free?

Does programming costs increase?
You need to add an adapter (assuming your box is new enough to work with it; otherwise you need to update the box as well) which has to be installed by a DTV installer. So, you need to contact DTV to get that done. I believe there's also an increase in the monthly fee ($7?), but I'm not sure about that.

Super Bowl broadcast in 4k (1080 upscaled to 4k) this year via Fox sports app. Excited to give this a try.

Help me understand this...is this any different than having a newer TV that auto upscales to 4K?

I have a 75” Sony x900F so I should get upscaled 4K through regular broadcast channel correct? (Yes I have upscaling setting active)

I try not to tell Mrs. O what to do on :style: and decorating stuff. She lets me buy what cars and electronics I want. We’ve got a pretty good line drawn, I don’t want to rock the boat here.....

I wish I could say - my :nerd:  powers are not strong enough. It sounds similar to me.

Though now it seems Fox and Roku are having some expiring contract and Roku is removing the Fox sports app - just in time for the game. I've got a Roku TV, so this affects me and my SB 4k aspirations. My buddy just offered me his Fubu TV password to get around this.

Well they are going to upscale to 4K HDR. I don't think your TV can upscale to HDR.

Well....not really. Because do you really want a sub 50" TV? I think not.

I decided to go the DTV 4K route late last year.  My experience....

You have to get new equipment for 4K content.  Now, I only have one 4K TV so I only had to get a receiver for the main TV.  The genie minis that I had were compatible with it.

There is no increase in programming fees but they will (likely) charge you to upgrade the receiver.  I managed to get them to acquiesce to a single $99 charge although there were installation($199 maybe?) charges that they offset with credits.

I haven't watched a lot on the three 4K channels they have, although I have watched a couple college FB games.  I hopeful more content is coming, but I don't know I would pay much for the "upgrade".

Agreed, especially if it's for your main viewing TV.    Go back to the drawing board of keeping the panels but cutting them down to create a bigger rectangle open space then.

So went to bb yesterday to get my eyes on the sets (I know there are store setting). Can’t go bigger than 65” due to space... well maybe if we reconfigure the room.

i traditionally have been a Sony guy.

looking at tcl 6, lg, Vizio, Sony.

thoughts and experiences?

Price point?

Loving my TCL (roku).  Purchased from Target.  Years ago Sony and Samsung really had a lead on the competition, but not so much anymore.

Eh.... I am liking these sales around $700. Costco has a tcl 6 for $500. I want to make sure I am comparing apples to apples (models).

Willing to go to $1000 if there is significant performance advantage.
The Sony and Vizio are both north of 1k (Sony X900f and x950g and Vizio PX65-G1). Vizio is probably the best non OLED picture in the 65" class with the Sony right behind them. TCL is the best performance for the money IMO, especially the 65R625, and it beats any other TV at the same price point. IE the 6-700 Vizios are not nearly as good as the TCL.

Seems like eveything got worked out.

We are pleased to share that all FOX apps, including FOX Sports, FOX NOW, FOX News and FOX Nation, will continue to be on Roku. We are happy you can keep enjoying all of our great programming, including the Big Game in 4K and the season premiere of THE MASKED SINGER this Sunday.

Otis, I've probably been thinking about this way more than I should be.   If I was you, and the wife said need to keep the wood panels, what I would do is build out your present niche to be inset only about 3-4 inches (with your plug and HDMI/surround sound cord tunnels in it).

Then I would buy whatever the biggest size TV you can have over that mantel.  If torn between two sets, then get the one that has the slimmer profile.  Don't worry about the present inset niche square size.

Then I would get one of those pull out and swivel TV mounts (that works with the size of your new TV) and mount it to this new inset.  You can get a nice one for cheap on Amazon (I spent $50 for this kind of mount for my 75").   Then when you push the TV all the way back (when not in use) it will sit flush over the top of the wood paneling and look like it's mounted right to it.

This would be the best of all worlds.  You keep all the wood paneling, but you also get a big TV that will ultimately cover up majority of that wood paneling when pushed up against it.   But when pull the TV out a bit or swivel, you'll still see the wood panels behind it giving it a clean custom look.

I was in our Walmart Sunday and they had a 65" Samsung 4K smart tv for $497. Almost left with one

You’re totally right. But it’s a battle I’m likely to lose or rather not care enough to fight. I pick my battles very carefully...

looking at a samsung Q70 QLED for main TV. (Fairly bright room, watch a lot of sports, worried about OLED burnin).

Are the prices we're seeing right now,  i.e. Q70 55 inch for 997, the lowest we'll see for awhile? Was waiting for them to drop below 850, not sure when that will happen.
looks like I should have bought. Back up to 1197. I guess I'll wait for Spring sales.

Anybody have two or more 65”+ tv’s in your main viewing area? We’re finishing our basement and one 65” OLED doesn’t seem like enough. Thinking 2-4 large tv’s for gaming battles and multiple sports at the same time.

Holy crap isn't that like 5 or 6 grand?  Curious to hear if it's worth it.
I have the 2018 version 77 inch LG OLED. Worth every inch and penny. Was watching snowboarding in 4KHDR today, and I don’t even like snowboarding. Just enjoying the picture.

Trying to currently convince the wife to do this right now.  Have a wall in our new basement that would work perfect for this but she is not buying it.  I am looking at probably 2 60 inch on the wall rather than 65 but it would be great  for when the kids are out of the house and I finally get to have my sports room in the basement with 2 games on.  I even tried the when the kids have friends over they can all play xbox together but so far she isn't buying it.

Why not get a projector. 120" if not bigger screen.

Mine has the ability to split screen also

I pulled the trigger on the TCL 75 inch 6 series over the weekend. My TV in the family room croaked on Friday night. I had just rented a movie on Amazon Prime and was about to hit play when the TV crapped out. The screen turned off. I was only able to get the screen to work for a milisecond after turning the TV back on over the next couple days. So my TV in the basement went into the family room and the TCL went into my basement.

Sound isn't terrible on regular TV. I'm not really an audiophile though. I kept the volume at like 40 when watching AT&T Streaming. But when I put a Blue Ray in, the sound had to be kicked up to about 90. I have a sound bar and sub coming tomorrow.

Be careful when picking this thing up. The box is easily a foot taller than any other 75 inch TV. The wife's mini van would not hold it. Had to scramble and get a truck out there from a relative.

As for the TV itself. The display is all that it was purported to be. Just amazing. And I haven't even tweaked the display settings yet. It's so good, my TV that's in the family room is bugging me with the sub par display compared to the TCL. I would highly recommend. Beyond highly, actually. It's phenomenal. I might be putting the 65 inch in my family room.

Throw in the fact it's rated very good for gaming TCL is the way to go.

Really struggling with this. Currently have a 46" Panasonic plasma sitting in my front room. Other that the bulky design, it works fine. My wife would like something bigger (yeah yeah) and modern looking. Don't really have the room for a 55" and there appears to be a limited selection of 49"-50" TV's that would be comparable. The LG Nano 8 series or Samsung Q60 for instance. If I had room for a 55", I would be at Costco buying the TCL 613 for $399 in an instance.

Just don't feel like spending the money will improve anything over the plasma.

I had a 50” Panasonic plasma for almost 15 years.  Fantastic TV.  Used power lock crazy though.  You might want to factor in electricity usage in your expense calculations.

Understand. But it's been such a great TV. Would hate to get rid of it.

Would almost be easier to replace my 60" ST60 in the basement. A lot of options in that size range. But I love my ST60.

We are replacing the TV in our main living area.

Was ready to pull the trigger on a 65 Sony 4K HDR Ultra HD on sale for 799.00.

When I went in to make the purchase saw a Samsung 65 4K, Ultra HD. LED LCD on sale for 499.00.   Side by side I don`t see any difference.  Is the Sony 300 dollars better?

I have a Sony Bravia now that cost 1999.00 7-8 years ago so I am blown away at how inexpensive these are.

Congrats on the purchase!! I'd highly recommend using the roku app and the advanced setting to get the picture dialed in. I used rtings settings as the base and then a few youtube videos one and two for calibration.

I'd also recommend not using ARC or any power or control via HDMI, gave me all sorts of headaches with my universal remote and receiver.

Things, big daddy! I needed this. I got the TV home on Saturday at about 5 and had to get to a charity auction at the kids school at 6. Yesterday was my daughter's 4th birthday part so I didn't get the TV stand until 6:30. So one movie and one show last night was all I had time for. I'll dial it in with those links.

Talk to me about that last sentence. Talk to me like I've never heard of those options, because, uh, I haven't.

Also, anything I need to know about Roku? I'm using this for a monitor for AT&T streaming, Netflix, Disney+ and DVD's. I've never had a Roku TV so any advice there.

Anyone on the fence might want to pull the trigger before manufacturing and part delivery delays hit the supply chain and shipping delays make units impossible to find.
I had the hardest time finding a TV stand. I went to a weekend only furniture store here in St. Louis that is the money play here in my town. they didn't have a single unit in the warehouse in the store. They were all at the main warehouse 30 miles away. They normally stock the main warehouse and then fill the backs of all the stores. None of the stores had much of any stock at the stores. I went to another store and they said pretty much the same thing. I wound up getting a unit on clearance which meant I could take the floor model. They said it was directly related to Corona Virus.

That being said, the factories are back up and running in China, but there is going to be a lull till they get the stock shipped and those ships arrive.

So you can use the apps on the TV since they'll all be 4k, unless your other streaming device has 4k/HDR/Dobly Vision.

For ARC (Audio Return Chanel) and power control it might be ok with just the soundbar. Since I'm using a receiver and other inputs for other devices it would flip inputs and not shut off or turn on correctly until I disabled it across the board. It's a "standard" that is implemented differently across mfg and never works appropriately in my experience.
