Applying for Jobs (1 Viewer)

Long story short, my kids go to private schools although we don’t have private school income (I know, I'll never qualify to be a real FFA member). So, I have been applying, trying to get a second job. My main job is in IT, but I’m looking for a second or third shift job that is more physical than it is mental. I’ve applied for janitorial jobs, 24 hour fitness jobs, etc. The issue I have is, I never get called and everything is done online, so there is really no way to follow up. What to do in this situation? Most companies don’t want phone calls for job postings. Do you go to the physical location and ask to talk someone? If I do that, are the odds high that they will refer me to their website? The only person that called me back lost any interest when she found out I intend to keep my current job.

With the holiday season coming, I would think UPS would be hiring people around now.

If legit jobs don't pan out, you could always set up a webcam and charge people for watching you and the missus make whoopie. :2cents:

I hear McDonalds workers will soon be making $15/hr.

Sports referee an option? Usually evening/weekend hours. take a course, get certified. Soccer, Basketball, Baseball are pretty easy entry when i did it. Although I agree much better idea to find a higher paying main job in IT or do some consulting.

What do you do in IT? Seems like you'd be better off getting a better-paying IT job than taking a job as a janitor.
Better paying, but there are benefits to having your part time job being a 180 from your career, and it's the way I'd suggest to go based on about 2 years of experience working 2 jobs.

I don't have a clue about answering your OP, but what about being an Uber or Lyft driver?

go check that thread... seems like it's ok money and on your schedule- win/win.

20% increase on 50k/year is $10000.

working to make $10000 at $12/hr = 833 hours = 52 weekends of 8 hours per day.

Work towards a raise.

I would think that for those kinds of jobs, showing up and speaking with the manager would be the way to go.

Thanks for the replies. I'll try to make excuses for answer some of them.

Another job in IT: I agree I can make more money, but I think to avoid the burn out factor, I'd prefer a semi mindless job. I also anticipate being much more tired than usual.

UPS: Not a bad idea, but they have odd shifts (10pm 2am, 3am-6:30am) etc..and a co-worker told me the job sucks.

McDonalds: If I lived in Denmark, Id be all over it.

Sports Ref: I wouldnt mind this at all, but Ive coached for years and I know parents are crazy. Is it worth it to deal with these people?

Uber or Lyft driver: I havent looked into this.

20% raise: We get raises in April...thats it. My boss didnt even get one this year. 20% is impossible unless I leave.

Ignoramus....you may be correct.

Retiring form doing Uncle Sam's bidding soon and have been looking for a what-to-do-next vocation. The Army put's a lot of effort into helping out how to go about this and once you get past the counltess resume variation classes, the primary way to get a job is to not be one of the blazillion resume submitters that get their 2 pages run through some overworked HR clerk.

Networking seems to be the one consistant theme. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

I'm saying: Get a brand new day job in IT that pays you more money. 20-25% raise is easy in a new role if you're good at what you do.

I don't know your exact income/family budget/etc. but I would consider taking the kids out of private school and put them in public schools. This will save money and you'll have more family time with them and be a better dad by not having to work 24/7.

Well thank you for the unsolicited parenting advice. Yes, my life would change, but Im not worried about being a "better dad".

FWIW, here are some stats from the neighborhood public high school:

State Academic Ranking: 368

Reading SMART Proficiency rate 31%

Math SMART Proficiency rate 29%

Failure rates in core courses by 9th graders 29%

Um....no thanks.

Move to a better school district?

Well, alrighty then.

So, I'll find out today or tomorrow if my latest attempt wants a second interview. I felt the first one went well.

In any case, it seems many things were covered the first time around....for those with experience in this department, what is different in the second interview? The hours, type of work and salary are all well documented.

Why don't you try some IT consulting on the side?
Im really looking for something different. Besides that, 99% of that would be done during normnal business hours, which I already work.
If you're trying to look for something different, I would think you could parlay your skill set into something IT-related that you could do during off-hours and still be a little "different." Don't understand your looking into janitorial work as an option if extra income is your motivation. Seems like you're selling yourself a little short, no?

Is moving to a better school district not an option?

If you're in IT you could probably make better $$$ putting up flyers in your projects to fix peoples computers / wipe stolen phones.

If you are trying to get a 2nd job at an "entry-level" type place, I'll give you the same advice you would probably give your kids when looking for a job. Print out a resume on nice paper and walk into the brick and mortar business and ask to speak with a manager. Shake their hand, look them in the eye, hand them your resume, and tell them exactly what you are looking for.

That alone will put you way up at the top of the list. You still may have to go apply on-line, but you will already be at the top of the list and the manager will remember you.

Appreciate all the advice, just wondering what to expect in second interview that may be different from the first.

Remember that Simpsons where Homer gets a second job because he wants to buy Lisa's love back with a pony and how it didn't work out for him
