Are there more HOF QBs in the game now than ever? (1 Viewer)

So I do think we'll see a sea change of sorts with regard to what constitutes a HOF QB over the next 10-15 years.

If you consider the rules changes that have benefitted QB's (can't hit defenseless receivers, no head shots/below the knee shots to QB's/no body weight on QB, etc...), this benefits the QB's production on a game-to-game basis, but also their longevity.

Take a guy like Mahomes.  he's 23 now.  Just threw for 5,000 yards.  Given the trajectory of passing stats in the NFL...it's not beyond the realm of reason to think that by the time he's 35, he'll have 70,000 career passing yards.

And with QB's playing into their 40's now (Brady, Brees have already made it and you hear guys like Rivers, Big Ben, Ryan talking about it)...the historical statistical comparison of bygone eras will become moot.

On a pacing perspective, on average...the HOF seems to induct a QB every 3 years.  Given that each class has a ceiling, I don't think you'll see the committee start to increase that pace.  So the bar of the 'best of the best'  is sure to rise.

For me...while I think Rivers/Ryan are carbon copies of one another when you look at their respective careers...I also wonder if either gets in because appearing in the Top 5 of NFL career passing categories will not hold the same weight it has.

As a possible point of discussion . . .

Number of total times ranked in the Top 5 in passing yards, passing TD, or passer rating in a season:

Peyton - 39
Brees - 29
Favre - 28
Brady - 24
Rodgers - 17
Rivers - 16
Roethlisberger - 12
Ryan - 12
Romo - 11
Warner - 10
Palmer - 9
Culpepper - 8
Stafford - 7
Bledsoe - 7
Eli - 7

Interesting.  Warner, though, only had 3 seasons of 16 games.  Peyton had 16.

Eli has had 13 seasons with 16 GP and hasn't exactly lit up the leader board on a year to year basis. I only bring it up because so many people have Eli as a lead pipe cinch HOF lock.

As for the question, I forgot to mention that I actually have a spreadsheet I put together that tracks some of this stuff. (And you would be correct in suggesting I don't get out much).
There is a three way tie for the individual season with the most QBs playing at the same time with 11 quarterbacks: 1970, 1971, and 1973.

1970 & 1971:
George Blanda
Terry Bradshaw
Len Dawson
Bob Griese
Sonny Jurgensen
Joe Namath
Ken Stabler
Bart Starr
Roger Staubach
Fran Tarkenton
Johnny Unitas

1973:
George Blanda
Terry Bradshaw
Len Dawson
Dan Fouts
Bob Griese
Sonny Jurgensen
Joe Namath
Ken Stabler
Roger Staubach
Fran Tarkenton
Johnny Unitas

It's going to be tough to come up with 12 guys that are Canton bound from recent seasons to set a new single season record . . . although I suppose if the crop of old timers overlaps with a new vanguard of killer QBs I guess there is a chance that it could happen.

Yeah, I did the same spreadsheet and came up with the same results.  The amazing thing about having 11 HOFs playing one position at that time was that they had fewer teams then - only 26 I think.  And that wasn't a "passing era".

Anyway, for that to happen now (I don't see any HOF QBs coming in this next year's rookie class) we'd have to have Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Ben......Eli and Rivers.....and then younger guys who's career is still yet to be defined - Ryan (stat compiler), Luck, Wilson, Mahomes, Goff, Watson, Mayfield - all from the first two groups and then 5 of the last 7.

The thing I remember is just a couple years ago there were posts saying all the good qbs were old men, where were the younger guys. Yet the above post shows what a solid future this position has.

No.

I had a long list of QB from back in the day, then noticed it had been done.
