Are WAIVERS suppose to be open in the offseason? (1 Viewer)

All of my dynasty leagues have waivers closed. I even commish 2 leagues which i also have them closed. I close waiver in week 14 (right before the playoff starts) all players left make up the Rookie/FA draft in the offseason, I however do not open waiver up till 1 week before the season starts....along the same time that we have to cutdown 5 off of our rosters.

Reason why i ask is cause i have 1 owner in one of my leagues crying that it should be open....he saying it promotes activity when all the other waivers are closed in my other leagues and everyone checks in daily....

So im asking how do most of you guys dynastys handle the waivers in the offseason.

I think "supposed to" is really at the discretion of the commish and to a lesser extent, the owners. Personally, I don't think it is fair to have them open throughout the year without some grace period attached. It just isn't feasible to expect all of your owners to maintain a constant connection to the league throughout the offseason. In fact, I would argue that the owners need a period of time where they can relax and take it easy, in order to gear up for the following season.

What do your rules say?

What is the process for changing your rules, or considering rules changes? Is there a league-wide vote, a council vote, or is it the commish's discretion(if its this, it needs to be changed).

Theres all the answer you need.

I dont think there is any tradition. Most of my leagues have waiver activity open during the summer. A few do not.

:goodposting: By our rules, my leagues have a couple of FA periods through the offseason. Usually one right after the Super Bowl, and maybe one during the summer sometime. We generally decided whether or not to have it by vote.

In the dynasty leagues I commish, I keep FA and trading open during the off-season (FA is closed only during the rookie draft), because it generates more interest in the leagues. Dynasty leagues can become stale very easily, and this is one way to help that problem. I think it's ridiculous to close waivers during the off-season.

My primary dynasty league takes about 3 months off after the end of the fantasy season so that everyone can unwind and relax without worrying about their team. But when the draft near the waivers open up again and except for a pause while our rookie draft happens, they stay open for the rest of the year. Dynasty is all about paying attention to fantasy football the whole year instead of just during the season. It's supposed to be more of a committment. If the owners aren't prepared for that kind of committment then they shouldn't join.

Our league (EFSports) has an open offseason with a four day grace period. It gives any owner ample time to bid on a player if he/she is not able to get access to a computer.

Most of the time, if a player warrants any remote consideration the bidding process will go for two - three weeks. So, if you are a dessert island for long period of time (w/ no internet access) you have time to come back and slap a bid on the respective player.

RAPTURE

We have a 6 week Unrestricted Free Agent signing period that concludes in early March. Waivers are blind bidding in one week cycles. After that, waivers are frozenexcept for 2 waiver periods. Our 6 round rookie draft occurs in June. I'll have 1 waiver period right before the preseason begins. Personally, I think this is a waste, but several owners whined enough that I conceded this. Their point being that there should be a waiver period after training camps to "reward" the owners who pay close attention. Personally, I think that's a stretch.

The final waiver period comes after our cutdown day. We don't have roster size limits in the offseason so if an owner wants to sign a glut of players he can do so provided his team has the funds. This typically occurs with 9 out of the 12 teams. Our active rosters are for 39 players. One team currently has 78. 5 others have at least 50. So when cut down day comes there should be some usable talent that hits the waiver wire. This last waiver period is literally days before the season kicks off. The teams that have saved money, or had limited finds to begin with, and haven't chased players in the offseason, can then pick over the newly released talent to fill thier roster. Think - Lawyer Milloy going from New England to Buffalo days before the season opener.

A couple of leagues I'm in close waivers at the end of the season and re-open them after our rookie draft in early June. They remain open until the season starts and waivers go to worst to first.

Waivers should not be run in a dynasty format in the offseason. Unlike redraft leagues there is a much smaller talent pool consisting of FA and rookies. The offseason player movement and news contiributes more meaning to your draft.

In my league, you cannot add/drop in the off season. We all like it that way because certain owners check out. This would create an inefficient market, which is how shrewd owners would want it. But that comes at the expense of less interested owners, which I don't think is right because it's the off season. I think you should consider this person's point and then do what's in the best interest of the league. Or the majority of the owners. My guess is that it would be 11-1 to keep it closed.

I play in handful of dynasty leagues and none of them shut waivers down totally for the off-season. A couple of them turn off waivers until after the rookie draft. Others will have a period before the rookie draft, close for the draft, and then reopen. There are many ways to handle the off-season, but I would say that total shut down of the waiver wire is the least attractive of the options available.

As for participation I have found that there are always a couple of players who overwork the off-season waiver wire. In one league there has been around twenty tranactions and one owner has 15 of them. He churns the bottom of his roster based on even the slightest piece of news. His moves include dropping a clear starting calibur player by accident and having someone come in and claim the player before he realized what he did.
