Are we fools for hanging on to Martellus Bennett in Dynasty Leagues? (1 Viewer)

This guy has the maturity level of a high school junior and I seriously doubt his commitment to football given all his off the field issues. Yet his talent is real and he could be traded after a CBA is reached. I'm not sure I want to wait anymore however. I do have him in two leagues and he's been taking up a roster spot for a long time, but I'm not sure he will ever amount to anything. Except for a 4 or 5 game stretch a few years ago this guy hasn't done squat except be controversial. I heard he got married, is this true? Maybe that will settle him down. Nah, she's just after his money, lol. They probably deserve each other. Is it time to cut this clown or give it a few more months?

Nice thread...He's a hold for me as of right now. If he doesn't move to another team post-new CBA, I think he's droppable.

I drafted him in I think it was the 36th round of my startup and am going to hang on since there is nobody better on the waiver wire since it is 16 teams 45 man rosters.

The Cowboys are REALLY HIGH on John Phillips. If you are in a deep league just stash him and thank me later.

Giddy up!!

Phillips may make Bennett expendable so I think Bennett is a hold for the time being, Bennett would be a starter for the following teams:

Bills

Miami

Cleveland

Denver

Philadelphia

Giants

Falcons

Carolina

Philadelphia would be a great landing spot obviously he's unlikely to be traded there, the Falcons seem like an ideal spot

John was about to replace MB but then he got injured, trust me on this. If he comes back healthy it's a no brainer this guy is Witten's replacement and he's really good so grab him now while he's an unknown stud in waiting. :football:

ETA: To MB's credit, he's been working out with the players and Romo but at some point he's going to screw up and the Cowboys are tired of his act and well John is just better.

Over Watson, Celek, Gonzo, Boss and Fasano? He's rosterable only in the deepest leagues.

Hey, don't feel too bad - even Jerry Jones drank the cool-aid on this guy, as he turned down an offer for Bennett that he likely now wishes that he could have taken:

IRVING, Texas -- Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones turned down a trade offer for one of his young players before Tuesday's trade deadline.

Jones, who didn't name any team or player involved, spoke directly to a club regarding a potential transaction.

"We had a significant offer for a key player that we turned down, and turned down in getting in more extended dialogue for," Jones said before Wednesday's practice. "So we did have that kind of activity . . . but I shouldn't name the player or the team. It was a very firm, significant offer for one of our young players that we had a chance for a lot of consideration if we had wanted to take it, and we didn't."

A league source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the deal in question was the Bengals attempting to acquire tight end Martellus Bennett, who was a second-round pick of the Cowboys in 2008. The source offered no other details of the proposed trade, which was ultimately turned down by Dallas.

Bennett responded to the report Thursday via Twitter. "Ha the bengals tried to trade for me?ochocinco Marty b woulda been a ruckus. I love being a cowboy tho this is home I love this team."

Multiple sources said several young Cowboys players -- including Orlando Scandrick, Miles Austin, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice, Mike Jenkins and Bennett -- are deemed too valuable to let go for any possible blockbuster deal. None of those players is older than 25 or has more than two years full-time playing experience.

Jerry Jones said he thinks highly of other young players on the team such as wide receiver Kevin Ogletree, left tackle Doug Free and outside linebacker Anthony Spencer.

Jones said the team was offered at least one premium draft pick for a player.

"We could have probably made a 'now' impact and just bolstered a position, and significantly, and obviously we would have had a takeaway since it's a young player for the future," Jones said. "By the same token, and I'm talking about the type of consideration, first- or second-round type consideration, but the bottom line is this: Had I not thought that we needed that player right now as opposed to pushing forward in consideration for picks in the future, then I would have taken the pick option on it rather than the player."

If I remember correctly, the rumor was that the offer was a first round draft pick.

I still have him on my dynasty roster so am feeling a bit foolish. This will be his 4th year so likely a FA next season. Hate to cut him if he becomes a FA next becomes a starter elsewhere. Looks like one of those talented knuckleheads that keep you guessing. I've strengthened my TE situation so not counting on him. There was talk about Phillips outplaying him last preseason though I do not think he moved ahead of him on the depth chart prior to Phillips injury.

Have to see what develops in preseason. Hard to hold on to guys who are not starters with limited roster spaces.

Bennett was Witten's backup then (2009). Phillips was a 6th round rookie at the time who was used for blocking. So they really didn't know how good a receiver he could become then.

Now that we are halfway through the preseason, are there any signs of which of the two backup TE in Dallas has the most value in Dynasty Leagues ?

I got on board the Bennett train a couple of years back, but I've long since let him go. The league is chock full of super-talented high-upside TE prospects with major red flags, so I figured I'd rather burn that roster spot on someone with a clearer path to a starting role (iirc, I dropped him for Shaun Nelson). Is he rosterable? Sure, I'm not going to look askance at anyone who's got him stashed at the end of the bench. At the same time, I think he's also eminently droppable, too. He's just a last-guy-on-the-bench type of player.

Just a hunch if you have an extra roster spot grab him.

With the success New England had utilizing both of their TE'S

I'm sure everyone has taken notice.

Without a true #3 receiver and suspect ol Bennett will help

fill this void, he's been playing & producing during this pre-season

if this pattern should continue early bonus if not release him no harm.

I just don't see the usefulness of carrying Martellus Bennettin anything less than leagues with 28 man rosters. There are plenty of other diamonds in the rough I would gravitate towards.

I agree. I am in a 30 roster league and if he was on the waiver wire, I am not sure I would pick him up. I could understand someone rostering him, but like you I would rather try my luck with some other developmental project.

He's tweeting about joining his brother in Tampa.“@1vabucsfan: @MartellusB you and your bro ever talk about playing together again in say like...TAMPA?”<_--- everyday broHe's regarded as a pretty great blocker and has tweeted in the past that once he gets his shot the world will see.Kellen Winslow may be a cap casualty as he's owed $8M this season. Bennett could be worth that flier afterall.

You don't think Luke Stocker gets his opportunity in Tampa?

TB did move up to take Stocker, but there have been quite a few people down on him after his rookie season. Injuries supposedly played a part, but he looked stiff and unathletic at times when he did get the opportunity to play. Dominik is still on town, but the entire coaching staff that drafted Stocker has been overhauled.Bennett is quite the physical specimen whose athletic ability has never really been questioned. His blocking prowess would be an asset to Schiano's ball control offensive philosophy, and if the receiving potential came around he could be a stud.

He is a beast of a blocker and technically sound. He'll make the odd catch and can be a RZ threat. He was a real enigma in big D.

I've read that he displayed unsure hands at times? Tony Romo also always struck me as the kind of QB that would ignore a guy if they let him down. It doesn't seem like Bennett got too many opportunities to be a featured weapon in the offense.Maybe the change of scenery could bring out the potential in him. Anyway, just pointing out that he's probably changing teams. He's on my radar as a Buc fan and fantasy player.

I've seen him make jaw dropping catches. There was a TD against the Skins that stands out in my memory. However, sometimes he'll drop an easy one.Tons of potential.

Seems like a great fit for the Giants. It wouldn't surprise me if he does better away from Dallas, with how that team has been underachieving for years.

I picked him in three leagues and will probably keep him atleast until the draft since I have to cut someone once I make my pick but if he goes to the right team I might finally drop Mike "the next Steve Smith" Thomas

there aren't many free agent TE's better nor are there many rookies available so there should definitely be a market for his services. he could be the #1 available TE

competition:

Fleener

Tamme

Carlson (coming of surgery)

Kellen Davis
