Are You a Swifty? (1 Viewer)

Default Swifty - my daughter has been listening to her 10+ years. Catchy songs - I'm in my Lover era.

She has a few songs I can kinda dig. I know I'm not the target audience for the "ugh my boyfriend was so horrible" or "being a celebrity is SOOOO tough" anthems, which is fine.

She's been lucky/smart enough to hit the audience sweet spot. Women that are slightly younger than me (I'm 41) are with her "message" and have the disposable income to spend thousands of dollars on concert tickets. So, good for her.

Certainly wouldn't mind if she disappeared from NFL broadcasts.

I don't get how some people are completely obsessed with her, but I feel the same way about the boomers who have seen Bruce Springsteen in concert 75 times

By default... I have 2 daughters (19 and 13) that love her.

Next-level schtick game: my youngest purposely plays TS on her Amazon Dot through the night with no volume via my Spotify user ID, so that my Spotify Unwrapped has TS as my top artist.

Wife and I took our 17yo daughter to her Miami concert this past year. While not my type of music I must say she puts on a hell of a show.
It was fun watching my daughter sing and dance to every song she played. What she has done with building her fan base and show performances is really amazing to see in person.

I could not tell you a single song of hers. I don't care who she dates. I don't understand the obsession, but like someone else said, I don't get the obsession with Springsteen either.

While I am sure I have heard some songs by Swift, I couldn't tell you any song of hers. If it was playing somewhere I would not be able to identify that it is one of her songs.

Why does having daughters that like an artist require you to be a fan? There are plenty of music tastes that my kids have that I don't. I don't get this "default" requirement

I'll field this one.....

As a father of 4 boys and 1 girl, I'm going to tell you that as a guy - just a normal, big dumb animal man - relating to your sons is the easiest thing in the world. By 6 months old, my sons were innately laughing at farts. By 12 months, they were all saying "BALL" and clapping for a ball like a pudgy bald man camping out at the three-point line at the local Y. By 2, we're wrestling around the house like a Battle Royal. Bonding between father and son is the most natural thing in nature and is helped along by common ground interests like sports, big machinery, funny movies, driving fast, making funny noises and appreciating a beautiful woman.

Bonding with a daughter? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, not so easy, sir. Unless you've mastered it, I've attempted to bond with my daughter in every possible way imaginable since she was born and I'm hitting a clip that would make Mario Mendoza look like Tony Gwynn. I've learned all my daughter's dolls' names, let her dye my hair blue, wear the USWNT jerseys, coached her soccer team, let her paint my nails, agreed to get her a cat and man.....it hasn't gotten me very far.

But you know what helped me break some ice? Taylor Swift. Know what helped me get permission to enter her room, a room more tightly guarded than Fort Knox? Color printouts of Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodriguez and Tate McCrae. And last week, my daughter actually emerged from her room, came to find me - ME!!!! - to tell me that Sabrina Carpenter's new deluxe release of her album had a duet of her popular song Please Please Please with the great Dolly Parton and wanted me to know about it and give her my thoughts. And buddy, if I weren't prepared at that moment to field that conversation with her and know exactly what she was talking about, she might not have spoken to me for weeks!

As a 49 year old man I would think it would be weird if I was. So no. Not my jam. My 9 year old daughter though, yes she definitely is.

I guess I was lucky then. We bonded over sports and TV and I never really had any issues with doing so. Although, I can't say she was ever a Swiftie (she is 24 now) so I guess I never had to make that choice.

Default wasn't the right choice of words - Serendipity? I guess we have likely influenced each other. She listens to U2, Vampire Weekend, The Shins. I now listen to some Taylor Swift and Fred Again. We get to 2-3 concerts together per year. She is 21, so I'll take it.

I think her music is way better than some here who haven't listened to her much know. It's not candy pop. I mean, I think it was when she was 18 or 22. But I wouldn't call the last few albums that. She has matured and her music is really good.

Also - I didn't go to her concert tour but I watched part of it on Disney. It's an impressive show. She's a force.

I think the evolution of her song writing and the progression of her style changes is what separates her from most other artists out there. She's not content just being what she was. The great ones never are.

:goodposting: well written GM.

I don’t mind a few of her songs when I hear them but can’t name them. My 14 year old daughter listens to Taylor’s music a little but is not a big fan. If my daughter was a Swiftie, I assume I would know more of her tunes.

My daughter is 9, so by proxy I have become a Swifty. What I will say is that the pop music of the 2020s is significantly more listenable than anytime before and it seems like there has been a proliferation of pop singer songwriters that, in some part, can be attributed to her success.

I can acknowledge her talent, but her music is just not my style. My wife loves her and my 13 year old daughter used to be the biggest Swifty imaginable, but once she became a teenager she decided she was no longer a fan.

Extremely talented musician. Just not my type of music.

For instance, I usually listen to Iggy Pop and the Stooges, DK, Ramones, Misfits, Sex Pistols, etc.

Sometimes I'll branch off and go Led Zep, Doors, Who, Pink Floyd, Kinks, etc.

Not a real Swifty but respect her talent big time. Outstanding writer. 10 minute version of All To Well is brilliant. And she simply put on the best tour of all time. Delivered night after night. Everything about the Eras tour was epic.

Her stuff doesn’t always hit - and she may be better off putting less out for awhile vs more. Over exposed

You are listing off some legendary musicians and artists and some of the best who have ever made music.....

The problem is almost none of those listed are ever going to make new music so you're stuck listening to a catalog of tunes that never refreshes and that's fine if that's the musical pool lane you want to swim in for the rest of your life. Plenty of people feel this way.

Swift and her peers are putting out some amazing music and boy are some of them prolific. My one knock on Swift is her voluminous writing and production is impossible to keep up with. I'm 2 albums behind and I LOVE her work. I feel this way about Neil Young and Bob Dylan to name a couple.....too much music, man. Let us miss you.

One other thing about Swift, especially on her newer albums - her collaborative work with other musicians is terrific. I believe it's a great sign of respect to an artist's talent when you see a robust line of accomplished musicians agreeing to work on songs and albums together. Take a peek at some of the talent working with Swift the last few years. It's impressive.
