Are you any good at Fantasy Football? (1 Viewer)

I've played in a league for about 12 years. To this point, I've made the playoffs once and promptly lost in the first round. I backed in with a sub-.500 record. I have never had a winning record.

A few good drafts the last few years and some waiver wire pickups this year, and I'm 6-5 and in sexond place in my division. I've lost 3 games by a combined 12 points. I'm on a 5-game winning streak. I'm poised to take over.

My core team:

Rodgers

Bell

Charles

Jeremy Hill

Julio Jones

Cobb

LaFell

Julius Thomas

:flex:

I used to dominate at FF, but at some point around 10 years ago I quit caring. Still participate out of habit and even accidentally won a championship 4 years ago, but for the most part middle of the pack now unless I get lucky.

23rd year of playing. I am either in first or going to be in first after this week in both my leagues. I have won a few titles over the years, but I will say overall I am a solid .500 over my career. However I have never finished dead last.

FF is about the only thing I can honest say I do for ME. Between work, trying to be a good dad to two daughters and keeping my wife happy, there is no time for anything else. I enjoy the waiver wire aspect of it the most. Researching and trying to find that sleeper each week is just the best.

I've been playing in 2 leagues for about a combined 30 years and I've won the SB once. I'm never awful, I'm in the playoff hunt most of the time. Just never get the right pieces to win in all.

I am only typing this to try and jinx myself into a loss before the playoffs hit:

FFPC $750 dynasty

11-0. 43 of possible 44 VPs.

Outside of setting a bogus lineup, what do I need to do to make sure I kill my mojo and get myself a loss?? I don't want to go into the playoffs undefeated all Patriots-style and then looks dumb losing.

Both teams I play weeks 12/13 are definitely good enough to beat me, but I wanna help it along somehow. Do I get on the MB and blast them all about how I am undefeated and they suck for not being able to get a win? That could do it.

In redraft leagues, the luckier people will win more often, simple as that.

Being better helps ya get there, being lucky helps ya win it all.

i'm really bad at it now. haven't made the playoffs since 2006 in my redraft league (where 6 of 12 make it) and have been bad in my couple dynasty leagues as well the past 5 years.

i'm also awful at sports betting, so basically i'm bad at anything sports related.

Dynasty, yes.

Redraft, I usually make the playoffs, but rarely have anywhere near the best team and often need a win in the final week to get in. Lately anyway.

I'm definitely a game/player watcher, I don't pay much attention to stats at all. So, my performance in dynasty vs redraft makes sense.

I definitely hate looking at stats and rankings.

Some sites and "experts" will talk about how Alfred Blue did great this past week against the Browns. Well, I watched the entire game (as you did MAC I am sure) and our D line was blown back on almost every play, mainly because our entire D-line is out with inuries. A good RB gets well over 200 yards on those carries. Foster probably 250.

150 is great and all, and helps your fantasy team, but on almost 40 carries against a trashed Dline being pushed back every play, even on obvious run plays??? Not any kind of sustainable production there.

Kinda like when people said Richardson had a good rookie year for the Browns, and I was like............uh......he didnt look that good. along with many many other Browns fans who watched every week.

Can't stand looking at "expert" weekly rankings either. All they ever seem to do is rank guys based on very recent perfemances and just assume that will continue. A guy will be ranked the 60th WR week 9, go for 150 and a TD, and then all of a sudden be ranked WR-15 or so for week 10, and do nothing. It's hilarious.

Ff is as much luck as poker.

And by that I mean very little.
you're joking right?

I mean if you are talking you play 80 leagues a year and over 20 years.. sure.

i agree that over tens of thousands of hands that the skill in poker is definitely there.

But with poker it was easier especially in the online days to get into the "long run"

but with FFL the average dude probably plays in 2-3 leagues..... that's like playing 2-3 poker tournaments a year... you're never going to get into the long run... so I think we can agree that any one hand or one poker tournament is a lot of luck... so is any one ffl season, no?

I am not good at FF any longer. I don't do prep work and only watch 30 minutes of the NFL each week at most. I have played in the same friend league for 12 years.

I used to live for FF and won the league once and finished second twice. The winning came over a 5 year period that ended about 5 years ago.

I just play FF now to stay connected to long time friends. I don't care about the winning or losing. I laugh at the guys that are crazy devoted. Seems like a waste of time.
yeah, this is about right.

now when my teams are hot I definitely stay interested longer.... but when there is a ton of disappointment like this year, i move on.

The main problem with FFL for me is that I'm simply not that interested in the NFL product anymore.

Usually do pretty well, but this year has been a disaster.

I enjoy it enough to keep playing, though not as much as I used to, and around this time every year I'm ready for the season to end, get tired of chasing waiver wire pickups, etc. even when my teams are doing well.
Made the playoffs in all 3 leagues and already won all 3 games. Doesn't seem real. :oldunsure: Thank you CJ Anderson and Odell Beckham.

made the playoffs, going to get rolled by a 16yr old brat who had Leveon Bell blow up for like 100 yesterday. Its a 2 week playoff but I'm down 40+ so unless my team just goes off next week, I'm done.

Met my goal a couple years ago. -> Won a FBG league that paid for an entry into the Main Event and got to experience a live draft in Vegas. Since then it's just a couple leagues strictly for fun with buddies.

It took me about 10 years to win a FF league. Since then, I've won about 20 more. A few observations....

- There is a lot of luck involved, but I wouldn't say it's 90 or 99% luck (like I've heard many people say). It's hard to put a number on it, in terms of a percentage, so I'll just say that there is a lot of luck/unpredictability involved. In most cases, if you field a decent lineup, anybody can beat anybody, on any given week. That said, your chances of winning are greatly improved if you're willing to put in the "work" like somebody else said.

- It pays to use the waiver wire. I almost always lead most of my leagues in waivers moves used. I don't think that means that I draft poorly, necessarily. Some people are either too cheap (in leagues where moves cost $$), or they just get lazy/disinterested (and don't make moves). Either way, it's hard to compete without using the waiver wire. There's just too much that changes in an average NFL season, whether it be injuries, suspensions, or other factors, to stand pat with what you drafted (unless it's a league where you draft only, obviously).

- The same thing can be said about trades, but it depends on the league. In most of my leagues, I've become pretty good (and pretty active), in terms of making trades. I tend to sell the future for the now (in leagues where future picks can be dealt), but not always. I guess that, as I've become more experienced with FF, I've realized that too much changes (from year to year, week to week) to assume anything. So, if I can improve my chances of winning this year, I'm willing to take a hit on next year's draft (which can be hit and miss, anyway). That's a different debate for a different time, probably, but my success in dynasty leagues has drastically increased since I've taken on that "win now" mentality.

- If you play in a lot of leagues, it increases your chances of winning at least one of them. But, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good to diversify, in terms of who you draft. If you do that, you might not really increase your chances of winning, as much as you're just increasing your $$ spent. I tend to pick the guys who I think will do well, where I think there is value to be had. I'm in 17 leagues this year, and I made the playoffs in 15 of those leagues. I don't have Manning or Luck in any of the 17. But, I have a lot of Russell Wilson and Tom Brady, and guys like Brees, Rodgers, Roethlisberger, Cutler in about one league each. Likewise, I have no Charles, McCoy, Peterson (the consensus top three RB's), but made a lot of "value" picks on guys like FJax, Bradshaw, etc. And, it didn't hurt that I took LeVeon Bell and Antonio Brown a bunch. Plus, like I said before, the waiver wire helps (I snagged Asiata and Beckham anywhere I could, for example).

- I tend to stick to my own rules, in terms of who I start. In other words, I agree with the saying "always start your studs." But, if they're an injury risk, and you have another option who is 100% healthy (but maybe projected to score slightly less), I'll take the healthy player 100 times out of 100. There's nothing worse than losing in Week 14, 15, or 16 because your stud RB/WR (who was questionable all week) leaves in the second quarter, because they re-aggravated their high ankle sprain.

- If you're fairly knowledgable, make your own draft/lineup decisions (don't just follow some expert's rankings/projections for the year/week). It makes FF a lot more fun, and you second-guess yourself a lot less if it was YOUR decision in the first place (and not just something you decided from following a particular magazine, website, or writer). I typically make every decision based on my gut feeling. That doesn't mean that I don't look at other/outside influences, but I do so to affirm my thinking on a player. If it's way off, I look into that player/situation a little bit more, to see what I might be missing. It it's on (and mirrors what I'm thinking), I roll with it.

- Success in fantasy football is about playing the odds. In terms of who I draft, who I add/drop, who I trade, who I start, etc. Let's face it... Odds are the reason we draft kickers from NE or DEN, or kickers from domed stadiums. The same can be said for most other FF-related decisions. We're trying to find the guys that are going to score the most. Sometimes, it's as simple as who is more likely to score a TD this week. Sometimes, it's far more complicated than that.

Bottom line is this... It may sound like I'm in a lot of leagues (and I am), but I enjoy the variety. I'm in about 4 "locals"... all with people that I know from various parts of my past. Friends/family from one place, friends/co-workers from another part/place in my life, etc. The rest are just variety... A few redrafts, and a bunch of dynasty IDP leagues (that I've gotten hooked on over the past decade). So, I do it for a variety of reasons... To stay in touch, because I love football, and because I enjoy the competition/variety of being in various types of fairly competitive leagues.

80 teams 71 in masters ff. 64% winning percentage. 2 team out of it, 9 teams with 1st round bye at this time. All 100+ leagues. FFPC. 4 teams 3 made playoffs. 3 yahoo all in good shape. Then a few personal leagues. I don't share advice.
Got 50 of the 71 teams in masters, in the final 4. FFPC out of 3 playoff teams 2 won the championship. (+3k there). 3 yahoo all in final 4. FYI

Wow dude, you're amazing. I wish you gave advice. Life is so unfair.

4 leagues, 4 Final Fours. Favored in 3.

I'll be back next week to tell you about how I won one of these 4 games at best. My teams historically s**t the bed in week 15, because that's when the real money games start.

No. In one league I was the highest scoring team but lost last week when Novak and Keenan Allen couldn't combine for 6 points on Sunday night. :hot: Even though I was the highest scoring team, I couldn't muster a bye.

In my other league I was 7/10 in scoring but got a bye. I am a severe underdog this weekend.

I don't do any research on my own. I blindly follow FBG recs. You could aptly describe me as a FF sheeple.

I suck. I used to think I was good based off of two championships in 3 years. Since then its been 1st round exits pretty much every year.

Next year I'm going to throw darts at a board for my draft and then let my 5 year old daughter pick my lineup each week.

I would say I'm:

  • very good at dynasty - took over a 1-12 team, made a ton of trades, won the title in years 3, 4, and 5, lost in the championship game in years 7 and 9 and the semis in year 8. While there is a mix of luck and skill in there of course, a for most of those years, I was either in first by a long way or was at least hugely better than the third best team.
  • very good at trading - much more impactful in dynasty than my now largely tradeless redraft league
  • good at auction/drafting - VBD + game theory sets me up well here in redraft leagues
  • average at the waiver wire/free agents - this is a function of time moreso than knowledge/skill... there are a lot of weeks I don't even look until the first night or two was run
  • poor at setting lineups - not sure if I'm average or not, but I feel like I leave a LOT of points on the bench. This is probably in part because I tend to not spend a ton of auction money on one player, but instead get multiple guys around the same value. When I line up the prices, it often looks like I traded my 1st and 5th round pick for a 2nd and to 3rds...
As a result of all of this, my redraft teams tend to be fighting for a playoff spot the final two weeks, but rarely do I have it locked up before that

2-1 this week.

KEEP US UPDATED!

Finished 11-2, 1st place in 3 leagues. Unless there are some freak injuries during warm ups for MNF I'll be playing for that coveted 3rd place finish next week.

:kicksrock:

Made the playoffs in all 3 leagues and promptly got the #### kicked out of me, losing by 30, 50 and 80 points. The latter featured a team with Big Ben, Charles, Jordy, Dez and Gronk.

Anyone have any good fantasy bad beat stories they'd like to tell? I love hearing those.
Working on one in the ffpc two week dynasty championship round. Will be in the lead after this week but now missing murray, julio, marshall, and julius is obviously injured.

Well got 28 teams with money............out of the 50. But I lost big. Many of my 250+ leagues lost. It is brutal. I went a 600% return to 300% at best. I will make 200% no matter what but that does not equal the time and effort put into it.

Not me, but a good friend of mine was in one of those big leagues a few years ago, where the grand prizes are paid out based on the cumulative results over a 2- or 3- week playoff period. Going into the final week, his team was ~50 points out of first place, and there were like 40 teams ahead of him so the odds of jumping everyone into one of the top spots were slim (or so he assumed). He ended up eyeballing his lineup Sunday morning but didn't put much thought into it.

Turns out his team blew up and shot up the standings. Nearing the end of the late games, he had made it into second place and was a few points out of first (2nd place paid something like $3,000, and 1st place was like $25,000 so it was a big difference). The guy ahead of him was done, and my friend just had the Cardinals D left vs. the Bears. Unfortunately the Bears were up and were basically just running out the clock, so it didn't seem there'd be any way for the Cards D to score the points he needed.

Inside the 2 minute warning, the defense holds the Bears on 3rd down so they line up for a FG. Sure enough, Arizona blocks the kick and returns it 80+ yards for a TD. My friend is going nuts, thinking he just won a bunch of money.

It turns out he had miscalculated how many points a blocked FG return for a TD was worth, so instead of moving up into first, he actually came within a point or two but stayed in 2nd. And on top of that, he had a WR who had been declared inactive at least an hour before the early games kicked off, but since he wasn't paying any attention to his lineup he never swapped him out of the starting lineup. Had he put in any other player on his bench, he would've won.

In the end it's not so much of a bad beat, since he still won a few grand and the "loss" was a result of his own mistakes, but we still like to laugh about it.

This same guy, back in 2008, was in the championship game in our local league. He had a huge lead going into SNF and his opponent had just Deangelo Williams left. He was basically counting his winnings already, since the only way he could lose is if Williams went nuts and scored 4 TDs or something like that.
