Are you kidding me Red Sox? (1 Viewer)

Long story short, my buddy and I recently decided that we wanted to check out a Red Sox game this year. And I am not talking about the normal thursday/friday night drop $50 on some scalped bleacher seats after work routine. We decided that we would pony up some "real" money ($200 or so) and get some good seats in the field box (first 8 rows or so) for a change.

Well let me say that I am appalled at what I am seeing for prices. Actually, appalled doesn’t accurately describe my feelings about the ticket prices on Stub Hub. It's $150 each just to get out of the bleachers at that site. In fact, to get into the Field Box where we want to sit, the cheapest seats we could find were $322 EACH, and that was all the way down the third base line. Ebay - not much better. First of all, you can't even get field boxes on ebay (probably because of the 200% markup on stub hub). Standing room only and bleacher seats are going for a discount, they are only going for $125 each. Grandstand seats are $220 each or more.

I just can't figure out how the hell people are paying this much money for these seats.

I recommend going to the game and buying tickets outside the stadium. I doubt you will have to pay the prices you are seeing on line. I've outlined strategies on getting tickets in the past if you do a search.

I managed for years up until I moved in 2005. If you sniff around you can buy them on the street. I never sat bleachers and I never paid more than $200. You gotta hustle. I usually found myself in field box, right field box or grannies.

Last fathers day, went up to to watch SF/BOS and waited in a line that started shortly after the game started.

I got 2 seats behind home plate, maybe 20 rows up?

$45 each.

I thank FBG peoples for the advice!

I may try just grabbing tickets before the game.

Last year at a Sox game as we were leaving (had to leave early), some guy realized he just bought bunk tickets for he and his kid from a scalper.

The kid was in tears and the guy luckily grabbed a cop who was closeby and tracked down the dude who sold him the tickets (the arrested him).

how do I avoid this myself? Yudkin, can you link your thread?

Anyway, as I've said before, I'm about 20 minutes from Fenway but find the game experience to be very enhanced if you are closer to the field (probably goes without saying). I will never waste my money on a deep grandstand seat again. Dealing with the standing room only people sitting in the seats and them shuffling around and moving EVERY time someone with a seat came to claim theirs was just absolutely obnoxious.

And obviously we've all talked before about the seat sizes and how absolutely ridiculous they are.

All great points guys. My issue is I want to be able to get really great seats and I don't want to have to go though "the hustle" with the scalpers when I should be at Game On having a cold one before the game. Also I am bitter that I am willing to shell out (what I think, obviously I am wrong) a good chunk of cash and I STILL can't get premium seats to the Sox.

Any room on the Rays bandwagon?

Have you tried Craigslist? I've had decent luck there.

best bet is to go to Fenway with a chart of the stadium seating. then just go to the scalpers and roll with them. Stub Hub sux as do all the other online agencies. Unfortunately, the scalpers are the ones that buy all of the tickets the moment they go on sale. The increase in price they charge isn't nearly as bad as the agencies. The only bad thing is that there are so many scalpers in the area, you could get really annoyed. But the good thing is they have to keep their pricing down because of the competition. The ticket prices though for a Sox game in arguably the worst stadium/seat to watch a game is pretty sad.

 You will find what you're looking for, and for face or better if you follow this man's advice. You'll pay the infalted scalper's price on the web...good luck...it appears as though many a fool are paying these prices, don't join the club

Sure bud. I've brought Yankees fans to Fenway and made believers out of them.

I couldn't find my old posts, so I will give the reader's digest version here.1) Get to the park early. Some/most games the team will sell any left over tickets at the box office. Generally speaking, avoid trying to get reasonably priced seats for Yankee games, as it likely ain't gonna happen.2) Hang out by the bars and the access road to the stadium behind left field and the green monster. Plenty of "regular" people have extra tickets that they will sell for at or near face value. Not everyone is out to make a killing. One time I found a cardiologist who had a box right next to the on deck circle who GAVE me and my friend tickets to a Yankees DOUBLEHEADER, so we had second row seats for nothing. Ah . . . good times.3) See what the scalpers are asking and then go somewhere and rearrange your cash on hand into certain intervals in each pocket in your jacket/pants. Figure out what you want to pay and then have access to the money and pull it all out at once if that's the figure you want to pay (implying that you have no other money). State that all you have is X and what would that get you. If you find someone willing to listen, see if you can negotiate better seats for the same money. I personally found this works better than seeing the options with different prices, as this means you have more money to blow and are willing to blow it by even asking what the other tickets cost.4) Time is money. If you don't care about seeing the first pitch, find the scalper with the biggest handful of tickets and make sure you know where he is. Once the game starts, the asking price will PLUMMET. A bit like the resale value of a new car once its been driven a few miles off the lot. At that point, the scalper will normally realize that getting something is worth more than an unused ticket.I have used this strategy to get into just about anything (sporting events, concerts, broadway shows, etc.). Oddly, the only time I got shut out for any performance or event was to see . . . They Might Be Giants. I kid you not. About 15 years ago someone wanted to see them and I COULD NOT get tickets outside the venue. Not for any price. No one would sell them. Still dumbfounded by that one.

The gf and I are thinking of trying the above for the Hopkins/Calzaghe fight Saturday...think this might work out here in Vegas?

If you windup getting tickets let me know. I wouldn't mind having a beer with ya.

ticket prices on Stub Hub.
That is your problem. Stub Hub is the suck.
Ok. Thanks. That's stellar information. You've outlined an awesome alternative here. As per usual. Thanks, guy.
if you read above, there are a ton of alternatives. You should have to pay no more than a 50% markup at this point in the season, which isn't that bad. If people want to ##### and moan, it is only because they have not done their homework and instead went to these sites like stubhub.com, which then allow them to justify their ####ing and moaning.I found $40 tix to the Yanks / Sox game on craigslist Sun night, ended up forwarding it on to my buddy and he went and had a great time. It is relatively easy if you do a little bit of footwork to get into these early April / May games on the cheap. June / July / August gets to be a bit more challenging, but definitely doable

I don't know how/if this will apply to baseball games, but I was able to land boxing tix to Hopkins/Calzaghe an hour before the fight for $0.10 on the dollar. Craigslist/ebay (locally, obviously) are your best bets the day of the game. GL!

Going to try this, at the venue, for tonights Cotto/Margarito fight.

Should be interesting to see if/how well this works @ the venue right before the event begins.

Update? To my original post, we ended up buying some real cheap seats, smuggled in a bunch of vodka and mixed it up, and took the saved money to a strip joint. The more I think back on it, this was the shark play.
