Argo trailer

Starring Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Kerry Bishé, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, Taylor Schilling.

Kind of a neat idea for a movie.
The real story is fascinating. Can't watch the trailer right now but hoping they don't blow it.
I consider myself someone that has these kinds of real events in my cranial files. But the weird thing is, I've never heard about this story until I watched the trailer.
It might be that I'm probably a little older than you. I vividly remember seeing "Thank You, Canada" billboards on the TV and in the papers.

Maybe I watched the news more as a kid.

Best movie I've seen in a long time.

I thought it was very well done. As weird as it sounds, Ben Affleck is turning into quite the good director.

Just got back. I'd be very interested to see how much dramatic license was taken with this film.
Harkins wasn't having martial problems. When he left for Tehran, his wife drove him to the airport. Harkins and his wife had three kids, not one.The Alan Arkin character didn't exist. Chambers's partner in the fake production was another makeup artist. Articles about Argo did get published in the trades, with the angle of two successful makeup artists producing a sci-fi movie..The Argo script was not found by Harkins in a big pile of unfilmed scripts. Chambers knew of the script and suggested it to Harkins. The movie wasn't called Argo. Harkins changed the title to Argo, partially because of his love of the knock-knock joke using that name. The canadian ambassador had a much bigger role in the planning and escape. Among other things, he sent Canadians in and out of Iran in random patterns so the departure of seven Canadians in one group wouldn't be suspicious. The six escapees actually stayed in two different houses, both hosted by Canadians. The actual escape went without a hitch. Iran did hire sweatshop kids to reassemble shredded documents, but they did not piece together a photo of one of the escapees. No effort was made to prevent the plane from taking off.
Other than that last one, no big deal. I wondered how much the ending may have been embellished. Loved the movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. I didn't know much about the story going in, so it wasn't like I was keeping track of how faithful it was to source material. The scenes with Goodman and Arkin were fantastic. Barely recognized Sydney Bristow's dad as the ambassador.
Seems like Arkin is really good in all his movies.

Ahhhhh Argo. Suburb of chicago, where they make the corn starch. Also the scene of some of optionmavens most memorable football moments. Freshmen yr circa 1979. 1st offensive series of game, Optionmaven takes a screen pass and ambles down the sidelines for a 60 yard score. Right before the half, Optionmaven takes a 28 quick pitch, picks up a few key blocks and runs it in for a 20 yard score. 2nd half, we get the kickoff, Optionmaven on the return, jukes and weaves his way into the end zone for a score........wait, nullified by a block in the back..........I hate you Bill Mello.

Sorry i went off on a tangentand had a Ted, I mean AL Bundy moment. Feel free to make fun of me. Plan on seeing the movie this week. Sounds great from what you all are saying.

Saw the movie today. Enjoyed it a lot.

Had it ruined for me a bit when I found out afterwards just how much dramatic license was taken. Several of the errors are pretty bad, but I'm wondering how accurate this link to Wikipedia is. Also, one of the couples (Lijek) in the film lives close to me in Anacortes, WA. Here's an article written by Mark Lijek:

I Was Rescued From Iran, It wasn't like the movie.

Argo #### Yourself!

Surprised to see the complaints in here about it not totally following the facts..So if it wasnt based on a true story, it wouldnt have been as good apparently?!

I think this is pretty easily a top 10 film for 2012.

It was good, but I'm quite surprised at how overwhelming well it's been received. Overall the film did a good job of building up suspense which was clearly it's main goal, but the suspense started becoming too fabricated near the end, and the final getaway scene was beyond absurd. My main issue with the dramatic liberties taken in the film is that a lot of them are unnecessary; why would Affleck have both Britian and New Zealand spoken of negatively in the film when in reality they both aided in the rescue? I also don't get the point of minimizing the Canadian Ambassador's role in the rescue.

This. I never understood why people need movies to be accurate. If I'm watching something for visual entertainment, please make up more stuff if it improves my entertainment experience.

That's fine, but I don't see how bashing the Brits, Kiwis, and minimizing Canada adds to one's entertainment experience.

for the basic dumbed down movie experience, it makes it easier to just have to follow Ben Afleck as the one single hero, rather than have a bunch of other countries and ambassadors involved. its not a history lesson.besides, I didn't think the Canadians' role was insignificant. they had to flee town, it was obvious to me they were really sticking their necks out. and the Brits/Kiwis amounted to one throw away line. I would hardly categorize this as "bashing"

It may just be one line, but it certainly doesn't make the Brits or Kiwis look good. Instead of saying they won't take them in, the Cranston character could have just as easily said they were unable to take them in, which would have been closer to the truth and a less negative statement towards those countries.

Saw it Saturday. Excellent movie! For those of you disappointed with the dramatic liberties, it is "based" on a real story and they only have a couple hours to tell it. If it was a "documentary" it would have probably been more accurate. I think most people seem surprised this story even happened as most were focused on the people held hostage. They had several lines that poked fun at how Hollywood works - got some laughs and but theywere true. Characters were cast very well! Even had a touch of Friday Night Lights.

Argo #### yourself!

Saw this tonight, and so far it is the best movie I have seen this year. Very good acting, directing, Affleck kills it again.

Great movie. Very tense. Will likely win some awards.
:goodposting: Really impressed. I also did not think the Canadian part in this was minimal. I thought the movie showed they were all in on hosting and saving those folks.

Not worried about the dramatic license. This just exposes the action and lets people go out and read (gasp!) about the actual events.

Great movie all around and easily the best drama I've seen this year.

I know a guy who snuck American prisoners out of Iran during the same period of time. Funded by Ross Perot.

Yes, but in actuality Canada did more than just host the folks. Again, I think the film could have been more historically accurate without their being any less suspense/action in the film.

"On Wings of Eagles" by Ken Follett tells the story of this successful rescue.
Yep. My friend and his wife are in that book. He was part of the extraction team put together by the ex army guy. They have me a signed copy to read.

Gosh, I hope the Canadians and Kiwis don't feel bad. And he didn't say "just host" the folks.

Knock Knock

Who's There?

Argo

Argo Who?

Argo #### Yourself

I'd give Argo a  , very entertaining I thought, maybe not historically accurate, but that is what the History Channel is for. $$$ well spent

Loved the first 2/3 of this movie then it went way overboard with all the manufactured drama. I understand that they have to "Hollywoodize" movies to make money but it got pretty silly.
