Lelie is a one trick poney...the go route. Don't expect him to go over the middle with consistency. He is a better run blocker then people give him credit for though.

Wow looks like only one individual saw Lelie as a #1...pool may have been off on this one.

#1 WR [ 1 ] [0.74%] #2 WR [ 41 ] [30.15%] #3 WR [ 78 ] [57.35%] #4 or below [ 16 ] [11.76%]

I was the first one to rank him as a WR#1....but I am a homer. For those of you who say he can't run through the middle have never seen him in college at the U (of Hawaii). He has the heart of a lion, but probably not for those QBs who he has no confidence in. I agree that he looks like a one trick pony, but that is really what he was used for, rather than what he is best suited for. He runs good routes, which is in opposition to what everybody says, but the problem really is that he doesn't adjust to the defense well. If you have a good plan for the offense, and can get him open, he will be exactly where he needs to be. If the QB puts the ball there for him to run after the catch, he will be awesome because he has open field moves. This is obviously proven by his success in June Jones' offense. The point is that he is not football smart, but just a really good athlete that follows orders well. When he was with Denver, how much of the passing offense success do you put squarely on the drive of Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey? Those guys wanted it and went for the ball. Sorry, but Ashley is not like them, but very few are. There are many great receivers out there that avoid contact: Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt to name a couple. I'm not saying he is in their teir because they also have sticky hands and adjust well to defenses. But they are also in passing offenses, which gives you a ton more opportunities even at the WR#3 position. With his arrival at SF, I think that they have great offensive weapons there already, and he definitely needs to be surrounded by a lot of other talent to succeed. But if he even has marginal success, I would bet that he puts up WR#1 numbers as long as they give him the targets of a WR#1. He would have been awesome in Indy, but I think SF is a good place for him to RE-make a name for himself. I know Gore might get the ball a lot, but I also think that the SF offense will also pass alot, and I think Ashley will show what he's got.Good luck Ashley!

counting your chickens before they are hatchedi would be pretty surprised if lelie is their #1 on opening day

Just calling it like I see it. Let's not pretend Battle is all world, and I don't see a huge FA signing in the near future.

Can he be expected to finish in the top 30 WRs(PPR)? Moose was around top 30 Wrs in Chicago last year posting numbers of 60 rec for 863 and 5 Tds.

Can Lelie match that in SF as the number 1? Battle finished in top 40 AND CAUGHT ONLY 60 PASSES AND 3 TDS

Did I just read someone say Lelie has the heart of a lion? College is a lot different than the pros. The Lelie I have watched short arms the few routes he runs in the middle, and could be tackled by a small gust of wind. One thing he can do, however, is get separation on the deep route. He just has not been able to catch them consistently. And when he does, he almost always is shaken up and has to come out for a series. Solid # 3 deep threat, though. and that is what the 49ers paid him for.

I'd like to revisit this thread in light of DJax heading to SF. I think Lelie has a shot at putting up decent numbers this year - not top 10 or even top 15, but top 20-25 aren't out of the question IMO. He had his best year opposite Rod Smith when he wasn't facing double coverage or the best corners. 1000+ and 7 TDs is a reasonably solid year, and he may come close to matching that this season. (Not sure about the TDs, as the 7 is by far the most he's ever had.)

Now, he'll have Djax drawing much of the coverage, and Vernon Davis should be pretty good over the middle. Lelie is a one dimensional player but he's in a situation where he may be able to exploit this and catch some long TDs. He's still young at 27 and his yards per catch is a gaudy 17.5. Alex Smith made some decent strides last year and now has the best compliment of recievers he's had so far -- he should improve even more.

Provided Lelie doesn't implode, I think he could provide decent value this year as a 3rd/4th WR.

With the DJax signing, I think he is back to a #3.

I think the team likes what Battle would bring opposite DJax, and Lelie has demonstrable ability to screw up as a starter. His hands are garbage, so he is not a possession receiver, and DJax commanded a great YPC average in Seattle. He is a one-trick pony - the go route -and he often screws up the pass even when it is well thrown and he is open.

I think Lelie will be the third WR on 3-wide sets with Battle moving into the slot on such plays.

Wouldn't even think about him in a PPR league, but I also think he's a bit underrated. When they used him as he was meant to be used in Denver, he was a weapon. When the ball got there.

No, he's not a sled dog. Big deal. I like long touchdowns too.
