With just over a week to go until the Raiders report to training camp in Napa, Asomugha spoke on a variety of team-related topics, specifically on new defensive coordinator Jim Marshall.

"He's got a few more coverages than we've had in the past, so he might be able to use that," Asomugha said of Marshall, who has been off limits to the media since replacing Rob Ryan.

"(Marshall is) still a dominant man-to-man guy. He never has been, but coming here he understands that's the way Mr. Davis likes it. And he sees the talent that we have and the speed so he's fallen into that. So we're still going to do man, still going to free up linebackers and other guys like that. But he's got a lot more blitzing, a lot more coverages, so we should be fine."

There had been talk that Marshall's scheme might free up Asomugha to shadow the other teams' No. 1 receiver.

"It may happen," he said. "This has never been something that we here have done. We've always just kept me where I am (on the field) and then double team whoever's on the left. I think if it's someone that's really dominant then we (move me) but nowadays the No. 2 receiver is almost as good as the No. 1. So you never know who to take."

Relating to the story if he covers the opposing teams top receiver where is his value?

In the past teams could put their top guy on the other side. Can he handle the job and if so will his PD's and tackles go up?

It can only help his value. He's had seasons with 50 solos and double digit PDs in the past. I'd think that would be about his ceiling if teams begin throwing in his direction more often. That might push him to CB2 value in the best case scenario, but he's still little more than a risky play in big play scoring leagues for me.

In a 2 CB start league I was thinking a bye week(CB3) filler.

I can think of a couple instances last year where he took the #1 guy, (Carolina and the Texans) and shadowed Smith and Johnson almost exclusively.

The results were pretty ugly:

Carolina he had 1tkl 1 int 2 pd

Texans he had 2tkls 1 asst

Smith had 1 catch for 9 yards

Johnson had 2 catches for 19 yards

Not sure on the targets they had, but they were both dominated by the best cover man in the NFL.

Probably not much to this report, but worth mentioning for those closely following this situation.

– Cornerback Chris Johnson is unconcerned that despite a contract which paid him a $4 million signing bonus, and having the endorsement of Davis, he is alternating with Stanford Routt in the base defense.

“We are rotating right now, but at the end of the day I’m going to feel like I’m the starter, regardless of whatever happens,’’ Johnson said.

Johnson played extremely well over the last eight games after the DeAngelo Hall was written off like a Bernie Madoff investment.

“You know Tom Cable thought I could hold this position, and that’s why Mr. Davis felt this contract was a good deal for me,’’ Johnson said.

oops --- maybe I was talking out my ### on that Chris Johnson reply.

Sorry about that.

and you can thank Jene on that site --- I'm pretty sure he's the one that tipped me off on it.

Maybe. I was pimping it pretty hard during camp and the early weeks of the regular season last year here and on our podcasts.PFF had great potential two seasons ago and really improved last year. It's kind of a skeleton crew, so it's hard to get real time information, but there's all sorts of good data to be mined from that site. It's one of the ways we confirmed Justin Smith's numbers to get MFL to hold him at DL (which I apparently forgot late last night when addressing the Niners 3-4 situation), Chad Greenway's SLB snaps, Zac Diles' snaps and others.Neil's doing great work there.
