Got a promotion in the mail today from At&t uverse and was curious about a couple of things.

I have comcast now and for TV and Internet it is $145 a month plus all the taxes.

U Verse is $104 a month plus the taxes. Seems like a no brainer.

1) Are you happy with U-verse?

2) Do you need a phone line to get the high speed internet? Or even a phone jack? I don't have a land line, nor do I have a phone jack anywhere near my computer.

I have tried to find this out, but I can't seem to find the answer. Maybe I am just slow tonight. Thanks for the help.

1) yes2) the Residential Gateway has to connect to a coax jack, and another jack where they bring in the twisted pair. I think mine comes in on a phone jack.

Just got U-Verse recently. We don't have a land-line here. So far my only complaints:Started off on the cheapest internet plan (I think $35 a month, only 3MBPS), but it didn't feel very fast. Upgraded to the $55 a month plan this week, hoping it will be considerably faster when they change it.Maybe there is some way around this (I don't watch much TV, so I'm not sure about everything), but we have an ATT receiver with DVR on our downstairs living room TV, and then we have to pay an additional $7 a month for the receiver on the upstairs TV. But the upstairs receiver doesn't have DVR capabilities. Paying an extra 7 bucks and not being able to record on both TV's feels like a rip-off. They also charge $10 a month for "HD Technology" which I guess I just assumed would be included.. but meh.Right now our bill isn't too bad, there is a $14/month discount for 6 months, and a $10/month discount for 12 months on the account. Once those expire I think the total monthly amount will be about $150-$160. Picture quality is great though, and as long as the upgraded internet speed is faster I feel like that's a pretty fair price. I haven't used it much yet, but the online recording options seem pretty cool as well. For me it's a lot easier to just go online and schedule something to record at work rather then mess with the DVR menu options at home.

The way i understand it, you should be able to watch anything recorded on your DVR on your other receiver. And, since you can record up to 4 programs at once (i believe that is correct) you can record everything you need and watch in either of the two rooms.I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger. I already have ATT internet (DSL) so i can bundle my land line (needed for family that needs to call collect), internet and tv and save some coin.

This is true. It really doesn't make a difference to me, but the girlfriend likes to be able to rewind and fast-forward when watching live stuff. I think we can upgrade the receiver to allow that, but it costs significantly more and isn't worth it IMO.

the computer doesn't have to be near the phone jack if you have wireless internet. only the RG has to connect to it.

correct - mine is in the basement. One of us can be on the laptop anywhere in the house while the other is on the PC upstairs. No complaints so far after almost two years. There are a few other threads here regarding Uverse - mostly positive but some negative experiences as well.

I have the 3 mbps and it is slower than my comcast used to be, but not so much that I have to wait for anything to load. The only time I can tell is when I am downloading a big file.I hear a rumor that the ATT service union is going to strike in April or May so if you are getting anything installed or have problems you better get it taken care of before then. The people that are going to be filling in are middle management that are literally taking some computer training courses presently.

Not sure where you are at, but my SIL called to have this installed. They did all the checking and said they were good to go, the installers came out wired up the house and then found out they were to far from the fiber pop to get it.

Just record what you want to watch live on the main DVR, then play it as a recorded program on the other receiver.

I'm getting the U450 with Elite Internet and Voice 1000.

I already had HBO. The channels I'll have in the U450 that I don't have now are the Showtimes, the Cinemaxes, Encore, the Movie Channel, Flix, & Starz (40 movie channels), the Sports Package (not spectacular, could live w/o. their other sports channels are very good), the International Package (could live w/o), NFL NETWORK, Speed HD, and a bunch of HD channels I don't currently get.

All that, plus all the cool UVERSE features we already have talked about, and the fact that their HD DVR holds a LOT more programming than Time Warner's Scientific Atlanta box, adds up to me being pretty happy about the move.

I've got the 3.0 internet and am wireless with the Wii. Never had a hiccup. With 6.0, you should be good to go.

i currently have the elite. i don't use the internet for gaming but did notice a speed difference when downloading music and videos on youtube.as for the roadrunner, i had the second best speed. i think it was 8mb.

I have At&t coming in a couple weeks to install, but I might have a problem. I don't see Comcast Sports Net in there lineup. Not sure about other cities, but in Chicago, A LOT of baseball games are on Comcast Sports Net. I have to have that channel.

Anyone in Chicago have U-verse? Anyone in other cities get Comcast Sports Net? Maybe I am just missing it.

They may not have completed all the fibre optics necessary in your area to enable UVerse.

A few things that I have noticed about UVerse DVR that I don't like when comparing it to Comcast DVR (never had TIVO)

#1 - Cannot limit the # of single shows to be recorded. For instance I have about 30 House Hunters and 25 Jon and Kate Plus 8 because they show them repeatedly and you can't limit how many to keep. With Comcast you could put a limit on the number and it would just erase the oldest one while taping the newest one.

#2 - For the life of me, I can't find a "day forward" button on the remote. Is there one?

#3 - There's more but I can't think of them. I'll use this as a placeholder and white dot for any more I can think of.

The guy came out for my installation the other day and found that my signal was too weak due to us being 2800 feet from the fiber optic terminal (or sumthin). He said he could hook it up and it would work, but not well, and that we'd have all sorts of problems, and that they may do an upgrade down the road and to re-order if they do.

I'm seriously bummed.

i was looking into it, but we have alot of TVs in the house and the UVERSE guy told us to stay with DTV. you can only watch two HD channels at one time and according to him that is not going to change anytime soon.

An update on the 2 HD channels / 4 SD channel thing:

Someone described it as there being 2 feeds. On each feed you can watch or record 1 HD or 2 SD channels. This does not seem to be the case. I haven't been able to check the maximum number of channels, but you can watch/record 2 HD channels and watch/record at least one SD channel. You can also watch anything that's been previously recorded while recording 2 HD channels.

Small help to those who have many TVs, but it might help someone trying to record/watch 3 or more stations at the same time.

Works fine for us. We don't have a phone jack, and I think we have the slowest cheapest options available. No dvr, so I can't comment on that.

My one complaint is they aren't carrying the MLB network. I called Customer Service about it and the rep really had no idea about when/if they'll be getting it. She also mentioned that they've gotten tons of calls about it, but nothing's coming down the line as far as she knew.

I love Uverse but there are a couple issues I have with it.

First - someone mentioned above not having a "day forward" button. I hate this, too. When looking at the program guide I want a quick way to see what's on tomorrow at 8:00. Anyone know if there's a way to do that?

Second - it has a screensaver. Seems like if there's no remote control activity for a while it cuts out the TV feed and shows a blue AT&T screen. This is annoying when you have little kids and want to leave the TV on their channel at night so they can come down in the morning and turn on the TV. This also causes the DVR to stop recording the live feed so if you turn on the TV and it's blue, you can't rewind or record what's been showing on the channel.

Third - I absolutely hate that you have to have a set-top box for every TV in the house. No way to just plug a coaxial cable into the wall and watch on a cable-ready TV. Has anyone tested this? I'm wondering if the extra TV would work but with no DVR functionality.

That's it, and I realize this isn't the AT&T support website. But for anyone considering Uverse thought I'd put it out there. Overall very satisfied but not 100%.

If I’m understanding this question right, the ‘day forward’ button exists, but isn’t labeled as so – just press the fast forward arrow on the remote when you are in the guide and it should shoot you forward a day.My biggest gripe is the quality of the HD. It is nowhere as nice as we had with Wide Open West (WOW) in the Detroit suburb area. Some channels are worse than others – for some reason the NFL network was supper choppy last night. I don’t know what the deal is, but I will be calling them to see if there is a way they can boost the signal or something.But I love the functionality of the DVR. With kids, it’s especially great. I can tape a cartoon for them and then boot them to the basement to watch it.

re: "Can only watch 2 HD programs or 4 SD programs at one time...", DirecTV and Time Warner Cable both have an even stricter limitation - I believe with both of those, that you can only watch 2 programs regardless of whether it's HD or SD. At least with U-Verse, you have the fallback option of watching up to 2 other programs in SD if you're already recording 2 HD programs.Additional Pros & Consros:** Signal is not adversely affected by weather** The whole-house DVR thing is amazing.** Don't need a separate box for HD/SD TVs. You can even watch HD recordings on your SD TV - you don't need to record a show in both HD & SD to watch on either set.** If you bundle with U-Verse TV & Internet, you don't need a separate wireless router to get wireless internet service. It only tells you if a show is about to be erased because of space issues.** When setting a series to record, you can't specify a number of episodes to keep - it's either "Keep [all] indefinitely" or "Keep [all] until space is needed". I believe with both Time Warner & DirecTV, you could say "Keep up to 3 episodes" or whatever...this comes into play with stuff like NFL Network's Gameday - I have it set to record the series, but I only really need it to keep one episode at a time. It winds up recording like 6 episodes each Sunday.** This might be because I have an old brick/stone house, but the wireless signal (from the U-Verse relay in the basement) is very weak in parts of our 2nd floor.Overall, I'd say I'm far happier with U-Verse than with DirecTV + Time Warner Road Runner. DirecTV's terrible performance in any sort of weather was intolerable. The Road Runner/U-Verse internet is probably a wash, though I have the basic U-Verse internet. I think with one of the higher-tier packages, you'd notice a big speed difference between U-Verse & Road Runner.

I believe with DTV, they have a splitter so you can watch as many different channels as you have receivers / dvr tuners (maybe with a max of 8?). I only had 2 receivers, so I was as limited as I am now. The one benefit with DTV is that each tuner has it's own limitation. If you're watching a program on the DVR and 2 more shows are scheduled to record, it gives you an opportunity to resolve the conflict. The shared bandwidth thing hurts me every once in awhile on Uverse, if I'm watching a program on delay (but am not recording) and 2 HD programs start to record, I'm immediately kicked out of my program and I lose my buffer without warning.

Deep in the Uverse menus you can find how much of your hard drive you're using.

I'm happier with Uverse, mainly because of the whole-house DVR. I was worried about losing Sunday Ticket, but the NFL saved me with the Red Zone channel coming out this year. The poor, sometimes terrible, HD quality makes me think of going back, though. I've also had some issues with programs freezing for 10 seconds or so, while watching live tv or a recorded program. Also (maybe part of the same problem), my internet connection seems a little suspect at times. I time out all the time while trying to download a PS3 update.

I don't use the Uverse wireless, I plugged my linksys wireless router in behind the uverse router, so I can control which ports are open on my PC network.

by router, do you mean the Residential Gateway that they give you? Mine is only connected to that by coax.

It's just a network port. You can use RJ45 instead of coax if you want to connect the DVR to the gateway, or if you already have coax, you can use that port to connect other devices to the network. So I have coax from the gateway to the DVR, and then RJ45 from the DVR to my network-capable HDTV.

on another note, it seems amazing to me that all of the high-def tv bandwidth and internet bandwidth can come into the RG through one single twisted pair phone line.
