AT40 - This Week in 1974 (1 Viewer)

40. "Dancing Machine" - Jackson Five

This ain't nothing BUT groove. The closest Michael and the rest ever came to gut-bucket funk. Also, I think this is the song Michael broke out the robot dance on.

39. "I Got A Thing About You Baby" - Elvis Presley

This was right at the point the King had to start mailing it in because his body was betraying him.

36. "I'll Be The Other Woman" - The Soul Children

Whoa. Completely forgot about this one. This record is why I love revisiting these countdowns.

33. "Until You Come Back To Me" - Aretha Franklin

I think this was her last great Aretha's-Rushmore record. Jazzier and breezier than her 60s stuff, but she's kind of set free here. I'll never get tired of hearing this one.

32. "Let It Ride" - BTO

When I first heard this, I thought these guys were black. I have no idea why, as they were the pastiest-of-pasty white guys from Canada.

Don't care - this ####### record rocks, boys & girls.

33. "Until You Come Back To Me" - Aretha Franklin

I think this was her last great Aretha's-Rushmore record. Jazzier and breezier than her 60s stuff, but she's kind of set free here. I'll never get tired of hearing this one.
Aretha singing a Stevie arrangement is pretty much perfection to my ears.  The rest of the countdown has work to do.

30. "Tell Me A Lie" - Sammie Jo

How much cheating do you guys reckon this record led to in blue collar bars?

29. Love's Theme" - Love Unlimited Orchestra

This is when Barry White decided the world didn't have enough kids and set out to fix that.

they used this as a bumper, usually after the weather report, on channel 11 (WPIX) news up here - fading from this into a "Crazy Eddy" commercial was always  :loco:

28. "Rock & Roll Hootchie Coo" - Rick Derringer

Corporate Rock in utero. Foreigner, Boston, and REO owe their lives to this record.

27. "Touch A Hand (Make A Friend)" - Staple Singers

I think this was their last gasp (disco & funk wiped this kind of stuff out), but what a band. Mavis is still kicking it, though.

26. "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely" - Main Ingredient

One of the great lost singles of the era. Cuba Gooding was a great singer.

25. "Spider & Snakes" - Jim Stafford

Being 12 at the time this record dropped, it was right up my alley. I still find it pretty clever.

24. "My Sweet Lady" - Cliff DeYoung

This is why we can't have nice things. This makes the Brady Bunch look like the Sporanos

23. "The Way We Were" - Barbra Streisand

I dunno, guys - everything works here. Ain't my fave, but it's well-done and that woman has a voice like no other.

22. "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" - Jim Croce

Man, oh man....what a talent and what a loss. Unlike puckered-######' like Paul Simon, Croce actually had fun in some of his songs, but he could break it down to the basics, too - like this one.

By the way, his kid AJ is pretty good.

20. "Looking For A Love" - Bobby Womack

I have no idea how Womack got as lost as he has when the greats are mentioned. Singer, songwriter, bandleader, and performer - he was excellent.

This record is one of the all-time midnight-bowling songs, so I guess he has that going for him.

18. "There Won't Be Any More" - Charlie Rich

Rich was bluesier than most country singers, so even his most fluffy stuff sounds a little edgier.

16. "Rock On" - David Essex

Great groove record and has probably been used in more TV shows and movies than anything this side of "In The Air Tonight".

17. "A Very Special Love Song" - Charlie Rich

A Charlie Double!
The Silver Fox - man, had that look to him, though, like he was definitely hiding some creepy ### skeletons ... like he lived in a satin smoking jacket and could make Hef look like Maynard G. Krebs ...

15. "Trying To Hold On To My Woman" - Lamont Dozier

If you don't recognize the artist's name, go look at all of your Four Tops and Supremes records for the composer.

14. "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me" - Gladys Knight & The Pips

This is a perfect record. Everything works. Doesn't hurt that Knight sings the hell out of it.

If you don't recognize the artist's name, go look at all of your Four Tops and Supremes records for the composer.
  An old pastor of mine had a framed “Battle Of The Motown Titans” poster in his office hyping a fictitious Temps vs Tops battle royal.  Holland-Dozier-Holland was listed as in the Four Tops’ corner.

13. "Jungle Boogie" - Kool & The Gang

:fro:   :fro:

Eat you heart out, Johnny Weismueller - THIS is the best Tarzan yell ever.

people say SAVAGE too ####### much these days, and it's quite nauseating.

Great thread. Would like to reminisce through more of these, being 56 years old.

Right in my wheelhouse.
